This is what our recruiters told us to tell people when they asked us why we joined.
We were specifically told not to say that we had no other choices in life and needed a “way out of the ghetto” because it would make the military look bad.
I joined not to “serve my country” but rather because I was raised in a military culture and that is just what we did. In fact, my father instilled in me the idea that I would always just be a peon and would not matter to the schemes of the politicians and bureaucrats.
I was actually way more idealistic than that until I actually made it to the fleet and had to deal with politics and douchebags who gave me orders.
I am so glad my mind has been cleansed.

No, if I didn’t receive a paycheck I would not be doing what I am doing. I have a wife and two children and couldn’t afford to be in a job where I wasn’t paid. I am fortunate to be able to get paid for something that I enjoy doing.

The average Afghan fights on a bowl of… whatever it is they put in bowls over there, no dvds, no laundry cleaning on base, no nothing really, except him, his trusty AK 47 and his Quran.
Either they are whatever comes after “being a hero” or they just want “it” more, whatever “it” is than the average American soldier wants to be “spreading freedom and democracy” or some such nebulous fluff.

That was not racist. Did you know throughout history the majority of slaves were white?
Besides this, what orion states is facts. Slaves were not warriors, trained with weapons. They were the landowning farmers’ beasts of burden. They could have only rebelled with what rudimentary equipment and skills they had available to them.

Throughout the world slavery ended without rebellion.
The US was one of the last places on earth where slavery still existed - it was on its way out the door before Lincoln ever conceived of the idea of the Emancipation Proclamation (delivered 2 years after the start of the War of Northern Aggression).
