really felt great today. had to postpone this workout due to work yesterday but rest sure helped a lot. Just what my mental state needed. Just some extra workouts and speed work until the meet. Will have mental plan locked in by Monday then no meet thoughts until Saturday morning except during easy stuff Th and F.

have been eating a ton so weight around 228, will dip it down to 220 once in 7 days and 2 hours

mobility
squat 225x3x2, 315x3, 405x3x2 didn’t like pop in first set so repeated it. Much better.
speed BP 135x5x2, 225x3x8 sets, 2 grips inside rings
close grip 4 board 315x5x3 sets. Light because it is meet week and no spotters!
hammer seated iso row 4/6/8platesx10

Meet plan:
655/705/722
507/529/555
555/what i need for Elite(1824)/Go for money

Just rest and loose 5 lbs rest of week. Dropping to 220 and some training/injury issues leave me a bit less prepared than i would like, but workout logs say these numbers are there. Just have to show up and find out. Took a less is more approach and see if risk pays off.

GOOD LUCK!!! Hit your numbers!

Good Luck Jack !
Been following your log recently. Met you in Richmond with Marty and Pavel in 2005 I think and at Ethan’s Wake Forest Strength Clinic when you spoke at the seminar. I am a raw lifter, remember me ? I jsut started learning some Westside training with bands and box squat and GPP (Sled), etc…

I hope you make Elite !!!

Good luck Jack.

Good luck Jack

Thursday afternoon
Squat 225x3x2, 315x2, 405x1
BP 135x7, 225x3, 315x1
weight 224 afterwards
started fluid restriction thursday am.

Friday night weigh in 217.8.

Damn scale tolerances. 2 damn lbs in sauna i didn’t have to loose but gym scale said 222.4 this afternoon.

Not sure how strong i am but i am sure shredded!

Have decided unless i vaporize 650 squat opener 677 will be second, then planned 705 for a third.

Or plan A if 650 goes great. Squat not sharp and hip sore.

Meet Report

weighed in Friday at 217.9

650 3W, 675 3W a grinder, 700 3R missed outright
495 3W, 520 3W, 550 3R rolled out of hands, changed shirt for third attempt
560 3W, 585 3R, 585 3R just nothing there.

700 squat was first squat i have not come up with in over 3 years. 550 BP i didn’t tuck enough to stay in position and it got away from me.

560 DL opener was hard. This is usally almost a clean pull for me, but my handlers told me i just looked out of gas.

Probably quite a few excuses i can think of, but none are acceptable. i have work to do.

On a positive note my grip was never better and first two benches were perfect.

This why you play the game.

Jack,

I admire the fact that you are staying true to reaching elite YOUR way through single-ply USAPL rules.

There is a reason why IPF lifters are the best lifters in the world.

Jack,

Still not a bad day! 1700+ total – way to go.

I bet the weight loss has something to do with the number – dehydration?

Keep up the work – I know I am.

Malinda

Jack - I realize you may be going through the post-meet let-down, second-guessing, and analyzing, BUT, you tried!!! Goals will always be there; look for something positive from the meet, then build upon it while coming up with a game plan to minimize your weaknesses, whatever they may be! I give you credit, you set a goal, you worked your tail off + all the other stuff life throws at you, you made the meet & you still have what it takes to improve>>>> NICVE GOING!

Art,

Thanks. One of the reasons i compete is because ultimately my doing well or badly is on me. Unlike most things in life, i am directly responsible for everything. The beauty of being so close to your goal, literally having the lifts you need in your hands, and failing, is the clarity of insight it gives.

i was a little frustrated and embarressed yesterday, but today it is pretty clear to me what needs to be done. Still working out the hows and some of the whys. Days like yesterday make the great days even sweeter.

Back to work very soon!

jack

My thoughts:

  1. You said thats the first time in over three years you have failed to come up with a squat, well it’s also the lightest you have weighed in 3 years.

  2. That 550 is a monkey on both our backs in full meets, I think we should get rid of it this year.

  3. The Dl is the only thing that surprised me. Normally weight loss, especially fat loss does not effect the dl much. Seeing how lean you were (for you, HEHE) I thought you were going to PR the DL. I’ve been watching all the fatbar work, so I knew the grip was there. Maybe a nutrition or sleep thing leading up to the meet?

anyway 1755@220 is no joke, especially with the way they judge.

Onto the NASA meet yesterday.

Terry bombed the squat, opened with 525 and they called depth (he was an inch below). We figured we would go 560 to help get depth, but it was just to much for him at the depth they wanted and he missed it twice. They let him enter the push-pull.

325, 3w
350, 3w
380, 3w (40lb NASA PR)

deadlift
425 3w
463 3w
475 3w

He ended up taking 1st place in the push-pull and setting the push-pull record, so the day ended ok. Terry said thanks for the shirt advice, it worked very well, and the advice you gave him about keeping his ass down worked perfectly.

Brad (the pilot I introduced you to) had a great day.

all unequipped
Squat
385 3w
425 3w
457.5 3w (the most he has ever done, by 30 lbs)

Bench
325 3w
367.5 3w
385 miss

DL
490 3w
512.5 3w
550 miss

Brad set the American record in the deadlift and the total in his first meet ever.

I ended up lifting off for at least 10 people and I’m wiped out today, that and wrapping kness, I feel like I competed, LOL…

Talk to ya soon, Jeff

Jeff,

Quite simply, my squat and DL feed off my raw squat. Hitting perfect depth for the squat and grip issues in the DL are the failure points, but my raw squat drives everything, and for a few reasons it was down.

Bodyweight had little to do with it. Some numbers. Before my two 728 misses in Miami (i need to show you the video, every time i watch i throw up a little in my mouth when the red lights come on)i had done 545x3 raw in both squat and DL. That is about 615 raw for 1, and so with suit and wraps adding 115 you get 730.

My best this cycle, only doing two 4 week minicycles was 495x3. That is about 560 raw. 560+115=675. 675 was a grinder. 700 didn’t bury me, i hit the up switch and was coming out of the bottom and it stopped. Judges gave me no credit for an excellent isometric bottom squat!

BP i just didn’t take enough weight in the Katana. I knew from training it would take 555-565 to touch, but i got cute and then didn’t really squeeze the elbows in at the bottom. DL was same as squat, not enough work. My penalty was i missed out on 3rd place BL cash by 2 schwarz Coefficient points. Deservedly.

So here is plan:

  1. Get raw squat and DL back over 545x3 to 565x3.

  2. Keep on benching with what i am doing.

  3. Run PRT in 4 weeks, maybe shirtless to show off my abs, if the the fishbelly whiteness doesn’t blind anybody…

  4. Will do Biggest Bench on River north of Baton Rouge on May 5 at around 230ish.

  5. Another USAPL full power meet in Hattiesburg in August. Wt Class TBD.

  6. Maybe get one of those thigh metal constrictors like in Davinci Code, it will hurt less than IT bands or rolling one out with a foam roller or ART treatment!

Tell Terry and Brad nice job and get back to work!

Will call you.

jack

I did not see a USAPL meet in Hattiesburg?..Can you send me a link, that might be something Terry would be interested in.

Are going to do the mens nationals in St. Louis? might be able to make up for that.

jeff, it will be Aug 4th in Hattiesburg.

today just playing around
