PWO Shake: Carbs or No Carbs

hearing a lot of different stuff about carbs in the post workout shake or not.

some saying to just consume whey post workout and have carbs at post workout meal.

there’s a lot of conflicting opinions, and it’s quite easy to find science to back up all the approaches, which just confuses the issue further.

Generally speaking, if you’re trying to bulk, then yeah you might as well include some carbs. You’re going to have to eat the carbs at some point anyway.

If you’re cutting, then there’s a lot to be said for keeping the post workout carbless (although some people like carbs post workout even when cutting).

You’ll need to do a bit of experimentation on your own to see what you like best. Really though, in the grand scheme of things it’s how you eat over the course of the entire day (and week, and month, and year) that matters most, not whether or not you have a fast acting hydrolysed peptide blah blah blah or whatever’s fashionable just now pre/post workout.

Lift weights, eat well and be happy. It’ll all fall into place so don’t stress about the little things.

Agreed on the last part by rds. In the end, if your macros are the same, you just won’t see much of any difference, so it’s not worth worrying about. Just have your carbs whenever you damn well please, and what makes you feel best during your workout. Some people can do carbless post-workout (I hate it, so I don’t do it), some people backload carbs, some people have them all peri-workout (Plazma/Anaconda), and so on.

In my himble opinion it’s just a minor detail - I personally prefer to just have whey PWO and enjoy my whole food carbs with dinner. In the overall scheme of things - if your diet is in line with your goals it will make no difference. For me, lifting/Muay Thai/bbj/conditioning (BCAA during) with a WPI+Leucine shake 30-40 mins post, then sold Protein/carbs/low-ish fat meal after either at home or out works for me. I live in Bangkok so ‘Please no rice, just vegetables’ doesn’t really work for me as it’s more often than not an integral part of the meal. ‘Massaman curry with vegetables’ - Not happening. I like and enjoy my rice and potatoes, and feel less of a desire for dessert and the fact I’ve got more food in my stomach (well the feeling of at least) compared to slurping my carbs is an added bonus.
If attempting to gain lean muscle and the appetite isn’t there at dinner, extra cals in the fomr of liquid carbs can be of great benefit.
Your lean like me dude - I’ve got more awesoem tats though ;0) I eat big in the evening IF style, so a shit loada carbs is no problem after exercise.

Let us know what you decide and hopw it pans out for you.

Cheers
