It seems like all T-Nation readers understand the benefits of a good PWO shake to spike insulin and push amino acids and simple carbs into the damaged muscle to speed up recovery replenish glycogen.
But does anyone think this could (over the years) trigger type 2 diabetes? Thoughts?
That is why i dont do a pwo drink, maybe it could maybe not. Im not willing to try it and find out though. I stick with real food after like oatmeal because overall health is more important to me.
My overall daily diet is more important than a pwo drink in my opinion
From a medical background there is no way this should cause type 2 DM. The causes of eat right, exercise, and you will be fine. Plain in simple this supplement will not cause type 2 DM. It is usally caused by obesity and a genetic predisposition. Frank
Exactly. One drink of 30, 60 or even 90g of sugar (with a solid diet the rest of the day) will not cause diabetes. Think of how average Americans eat, they eat processed shit full of added sugar as a majority of their daily diet, at every meal! Also, right after working out your muscles are most primed for an uptake of glucose, you’re body is ready for that drink. Now if you weren’t lifting and you were having numerous high GI drinks/foods throughout the day then maybe…but look at all the people who drink 10 sodas a day.
A can of coke has a cup of sugar in it, worse than many if not most PWO shakes. A coke a day, while not great, is not going to give you type II diabetes. Now, six cokes a day…
Yeah, there’s no way a PWO shake will cause diabetes. If anything, people that workout as much as we do and follow clean diets are less likely to get diabetes.
Best way to get diabetes is to sit on your ass all day and eat crap. Smoking and drinking might help quicken the process.
Chronically high insulin levels, brought about by chronic ingestion of high GI foods.

Exactly right. A steady state of high insulin, leading to problems with insulin receptor sensitivity is where it’s at. I do agree that this is probably just the beginning and there may be more things at work.
On a side note, I believe the autoantibodies against the pancreatic beta cells is becoming a pretty acceptable theory on the route to “Type 1” diabetes.
So one high GI drink after a workout is still MUCH better than most of the rest of US/world.
Ya totally agreeable. Maybe if you were drinking 3-4 pwo shakes a day for some wack reason u could have problems but one a day is ok with a good daily diet.
