PSU Death Watch

I have a question. Why hasn’t Spanier been charged with anything yet? Do you think he’s talking like McQuery…to avoid charges?
YET is the key word. I believe they are working on the case to see if he is culpable.

NCAA sanctions = meh… More than I expected but obviously Penn State agree to this to help clean up their image.

$60 Milion fine (roughly equivilant to one years revenue from football. Pretty positive that big time alumn will make donations and the school won’t come out pocket for most of that)

4 year bowl ban (more like a 2 year ban since no bowl Comittee would have selected them either of the next two seasons. This will have the biggest impact on recruiting)

Reduction of 20 scholarships a year for 4 years (This will kill recruiting for the next two years because the new incoming players will have no chance at a bowl. After that it won’t be that bad, just means teams have to be right on with their recruiting. USC had schollie reductions and still has a top 10 team in the country and actually has the #1 recruiting class in the country even with their restrictions)

Vacated wins since 1998 (takes away over 100 wins from JoePa and puts him no where near the winningest coach… Biggest hit on the program IMO because of the impact on JoePa’s “legacy”)

The football program is done one way or another. My question is, why would anyone want to go there anymore? If im in high school, not an athlete, that’d be the last place i would be looking into to going.
Because, fuck football, Penn State is, and will be an excellent place to get your degree from.
I can’t speak for all majors, but for engineering, it is an excellent school with great faculty.

A lot of us here don’t give a fuck about Paterno, and are lot more concerned about education.

So, yeah, if someone wants to go to school for it’s football program, stay away. If someone wants to go and STUDY, the scandal makes no difference what so ever.
Good post.

It’s PSU’s reckoning.

Penetration State’s punishment must be more severe.

Im fucking disgusted with the way this whole thing has been handled and the recent deadspin article highlights my feelings on the subject. Fuck everything.

Yeah I know. Anyone who is critical of Penn State or Paterno are ‘haters’.

I actually think they got off light with the $60M fine.
Their endowment is about $1.8B, and they raised over $220M just last year alone.
$60M is chump change to them – mere slap on the wrists.

The other sanctions have a bite to pride though…especially vacating wins from '98 to '12. And the no bowl games for 4 years. I remember them complaining about the bowl game they did get last year. Those 2 are the worst.

I agree. I wouldn’t rule out Penn State for post graduate studies because of this. I would rule them out if I were looking to play football, but not anything else… Despite these cock licks, PSU is still a fine academic institution, which contrary to popular belief is what college is actually about.

STB, I have nothing but respect for you and your contributions to this site.

That said… Are you fucking kidding me? How can you say that this school supports raping children? The five guys involved are either dead or in prison (or soon to be).

Everyone seems to forget that we raised ten million dollars for families dealing with pediatric cancer last year alone. We’re one of the top research institutions in the country, and we were recently ranked as one of the top 100 universities in the world. RAINN is another charitable thing we do (I’m not sure what it is, but my friend would kill me if I failed to mention it. It’s something to do with horses.) What does anyone stand to gain by demolishing all of this over the actions of five men?

I’m a junior at PSU, and I’m not going anywhere. Not because of football or Joe Paterno, but because of this:

I’m an elected leader of the Powerlifting Club team. I got here just in time to get to know the founding members of the club who passed it on to me and my friends. We built it from a few guys in Rec Hall to a ~100 member organization, perennially competitive at the national level, and we’re still growing. This team is my family, and Happy Valley is my home.

You can call me a pedophile if you want, but no scandal is going to make me abandon that.

Good post man, it’s up to people like you to change what folks think about Penn State.

These people however, are NOT helping.
