For an alternative look at statins, Dr Eades has written some interesting informative articles.

Great post!

You can also get atorvastatin (Lipitor) for $4 at Wal-mart, I will be making the switch to Lipitor from Crestor (THAT is expensive!) after my next physical for that precise reason. Another thing to note is that statin drugs are often prescribed at dosages much higher than what is necessary if the patient is going to be engaging in long-term use. I am going to push my doctor to start me on a low dose with the atorvastatin as he previously had me on 40mg of Crestor/day! For someone with lifestyle related high cholesterol, I could see a high dose being a good short term fix, but I have a family history of hypercholesterolemia and will be on statins for the rest of my life most likely, so I don’t see the need for placing such a heavy burden on my liver and other organs by continuing with a high dosage like that.

I didn’t know that they had atorva at Walmart, I’ll definitely make use of that info in the future. Crestor 40 is a whopping dose, I would guess you’re going to need atorva 80 if you want your cholesterol in the same ballpark. You’re probably getting your liver enzymes checked periodically w/ your doc, right? If so, you’ll be ok with the higher doses of meds since you’ll know if you’re not tolerating them. [/quote]

I’m hesitant to maintain any sort of high dose, for the time being, due to some other hepatoxic…uhh…drugs that I may be using intermittently. I’m currently only getting my bloodwork done yearly, but I’ll hopefully be on some better health insurance in the coming months so it will definitely become a more regular thing.

My cholesterol, without statins has routinely ranged in the 340-360 range and I can’t remember my HDL/LDL numbers off of the top of my head. The longest stretch I was ever on the Crestor was about 6 months (no excuses, I got lazy and went to college several hours from home and never refilled my rx’s locally) and IIRC, it got me into the low 200’s. The entire side of my mom’s family has it and I got my first bloodwork done at 17 years old and came back with a total cholesterol in that same 340-360 range.

I have real high cholesterol, not “I eat too many cheeseburgers” high cholesterol. Anyone who seriously thinks fish oil is the answer for all situations can shove it.

i’ve bumped this thread because i finally got some fish oil. my mom agreed to it because one of her friends said she lost 10lbs on it(true or not, i don’t know). i’ve read up on it in the Flameout thread.

currently, this is how i take it NOW(might increase in near future, but want my body to get used to the increased intake of omega 3’s)

1pill has 216 mg of dpa and 144 mgs of epa

Okay, that’s a ‘typical’, non concentrate, fish oil pill.

I personally take 6-10 a day, once or twice a day. It doesn’t matter too much as long as you don’t get fish burps or fish poops.

What you’re doing is fine.

yeah, if you take to much you actually shit fish.
ANYWAY thats a pretty crappy ratio in that fish oil tab, mine has 600mg epa and 150mg dha.
also look through thehealthyskeptic.org some (lots) of really good info bout dietry fats, also an amazing put down of the china study

Please advice the name of that doctor. My cholesterol lveles are more then 700, and I have no family history for such a high Cholesterol.
