Proteolytic Enzymes

Two months back, a buddy gave me a large tub of GNC whey protein (I know I know…) There was so much lactose in it I got gas pdq. Wobenzym was out of stock so I hit it with some Omni-zyme. That took the edge off the gas problem. I can corroborate that consuming Wobenzym soon after a meal reduces the the bloated feeling from eating large quantities of meat and fat.

That does make sense and helps to explain my experience with Wobenzyme. I starting taking it several weeks back to help with joint pain (knees) but took it 45 minutes before meals as recommended on the bottle. I have noticed less bloating after meals but no improvement in joint pain. I kind of like the improved digestion part, so if I want to maintain that benefit and also get help with the joint pain situation, would I need to double the dose and take it both with and between meals? Any thoughts?

For joint problems, tendonitis, etc, take the wobenzyme on an empty stomach 45 min before meals so that it will pass directly into the small intestine and be quickly absorbed unhindered by food. For digestion, take the wobenzyme about an hour after eating as the value of the enzyme is not in the stomach but in the digestion occuring in the small intestine. The pancreas makes digestive enzymes and injects them into the small intestine, not the stomach. That is why wobenzyme is enteric coated - to survive the acids in the stomach and pass into the intestine where it can do it’s job. Otherwise, digestive enzymes (which are a protein structure themselves) cann’t survive the stomach acids and are rendered useless. If taking with a liquid meal such as protein shake, take with the shake as the liquid shake will leave the stomach and enter the intestine quickly but if taking with solid food, wait about an hour as it takes 1-1.5 hours for solid food to be broken down by stomach acids and start to enter the intestine, so you would want to take the wobenzyme at the time that food is beginning to pass into the intestine to assist in food absorbtion in the intestine. If the wobenzyme sits in the stomach to long, the stomach acids will eventually break down the enteric coating and destroy the enyzmes.

Thanks for the info Heb. So it seems that I am using it properly to combat joint pain, but so far haven’t noticed any improvement. Maybe I just need to give it more time than 3 weeks.

Scott, you mentioned that you take Cytolyse instead of Wobenzym because it is cheaper, but comparing the best bulk prices on the internet this is what I found – Wobenzym 800 tabs $89 and Cytolyse 1170 tabs $288. From this info it looks like Wobenzym is significantly cheaper.

Are you trying to improve digestion or treat inflammation? For digestion SIMULASE by tyler is my preference (no commercial interest). 180 caps is about $30 (retail). To treat inflammation CYTOLYSE by infinity (warning: good product, typical MLM company) is my preferred product. It is about $30 for a bottle of 90 caps. I cannot find the dose for wobenzyme to improve digestion but more caps/day are used so comparisons are tricky.

Forgive my ignorance, but “MLM”? What’s that mean?

MLM stands for multi-level marketing i.e. legal pyramid schemes. There are a number of supplements sold through this type of company and in general I would be very skeptical of products sold through these companies i.e. if the product is so good why are you selling it this way? However cytolyse works very well (I use it in all patients having surgery).

Cam, I had the same dilemma as yourself, and a doctor assessed that I was not producing sufficient enough enzymes to digest my food. I was getting horrible gas, stomach discomfort etc after eating, so he gave me prescription for these pancreatic enzymes from Germany called Creon Forte. Since taking them, my digestion, elimination has been excellent and I NEVER have any gas/stomach related problems anymore. I suggest you check it out, and no, you can’t buy it over the counter. Don’t even waste your time with that OTC shit.

Interesting…“Creon” is the brand name of the same enzymes prescibed to those with Cystic Fibrosis. In that illness, panceatic digestive enzymes are unable to be secreted in sufficient amounts from the exocrine pancrease…
