Protein Requirements

I noticed JB pondering protein requirements vs. optimal protein intake in the think tank.

I recall when reading a Steve Reeves book, that he got much of his protein from what we consider “inferior” sources, such as gelatin.

Similarly there are the vegetarians:

(1) Bill Pearl - top bodybuilder in the world in his day.
(2) Doug Hepburn - strongest “proven natural” of all time.
(3) “Goldberg” the wrestler (??)

There certainly is some precendent of people getting hyooge and strong without scarfing down a steady diet of steak and tuna.

Yes, we call that the genetics factor. Plus, Pearl was not always a vegetarian and even after becoming one, he still drank milk and ate eggs I believe. Where did you read that Goldberg was a vegetarian?

John K:

You can’t disprove a rule, with an exception, or even three exceptions!

Fact: If you want your muscles to grow you need protein.

Can you do it without eating meat? Yes, but it is very hard and there are few who can attain a great physique in this manner.

3 vegeterian with drugs(???)

Well Doug Hepburn definitely didn’t use drugs, that’s why he felt he was “naturally” stronger than Paul Anderson because Anderson would not come forward and say he has never used drugs on a polygraph, and I’ve never heard that Steve Reeves was juicing in the 1940’s, but I suppose he may have been.

I saw Goldberg’s name on a list of celebrity vegetarians. I can’t confirm it obviously, but I know he’s contributed reciptes to a PETA cook book, and I’ve also seen articles referring to him as an animal rights activist.

Remember, most of the classic protein powders in the old days were soy-based, and guys still got big and strong.
