Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be another “will eating too much protein hurt my kidneys?” thread.
My question concerns my girlfriend. She is 105 pounds and wants to gain weight. Sounds simple enough except that she has a genetic disorder called Marfan’s Syndrom, I won’t go into the nitty gritty of it, but her body doesn’t process protein very well because of it.
Essentially, her body has a hard time getting the necessary components to strengthen her fascia resulting in extreme flexibility, stretchy skin, and little to no muscular development.
Because of this issue she needs to eat a high protein diet. I am worried about this because she was born with only one kidney (actually, it is about the size of one and a half normal kidneys, but the point remains).
I believe that supplementing with relatively high doses of amino acids could potentially help with her body absorbing the nutrients needed for her to gain muscle/strength.
So, after all that, I am wondering if there is a level of amino acid supplementation that would be considered unsafe? And, perhaps from people who are well educated in nutrition, any other ideas of what I might try?
