Protein 'Absorbed' Per Sitting?

A popular claim is that there is a limit to how much protein can be “absorbed” (whatever that means - into the bloodstream I assume?) over a certain period of time, and you piss out the rest. For example, I’ve heard it claimed that we can only absorb 30g of protein in “a sitting”. First, what do claims like this mean? Second, are they broscience?

It is all bullshit.

Just eat plenty of protein per day if your goals are to gain muscle (e.g. 1.5g protein per pound BW) and don’t worry about this stuff.

It’s not BS, the body can clearly only digest/absorb 30.00g per meal, soon as you hit 30.01 death occurs…

There probably is a limit to how much in one sitting will go to protein-muscle synthesis, but people forget protein is involved in more than just muscle growth.

for women 20-30g per meal is probably a decent amount, for most guys 40-60g/meal is probably a good goal.

Studies have shown the elderly need a higher amount than someone 20 yrs old… so for them, definitely aiming for at least 30g/meal would be a good idea.

I sat for 3 hours once. I assume the three pounds of steak I ate that put me over 30gr was all lost as farts.

Protein takes a while to digest. It depends on the protein type so some will digest quickly and other will not.

It is true that some can be lost in stool but that is due to other issues.

The rate at which the protein that makes it to our bloodstream is used depends of many factors so there is no set in stone answer to how much.

By comparing leucine oxidation with protein balance we can measure exactly how much protein synthesis versus wasting happens under given circumstances (for example, different activity levels); however, this test cannot tell us how much protein is being used for muscle tissue maintenance. This is a test most of us could not self-administer.

I bet some got flushed but it tasted pretty good so no harm no foul, right?

I don’t know, excessive protein farts can be pretty damn “foul”…

I would argue it’s not the protein, but rather certain foods that your body may not be well-equipped to digest

Yeah, I was more going for the pun. I have eaten fairly ridiculous amounts of meat/seafood at a sitting with no digestive upset but 30g of soy protein isolate is more than enough to cause me problems.

In order to piss it out, you first have to absorb it into your blood stream. Now, shitting it out is another issue.
