Press 1 for…fuck you! If I have to press 1 one more time to continue in English!

Last time I checked this was the “United” States of America. From many come one. Not from many come “do whatever it is the fuck you want to do”.

Everything from the bill of rights to the dec. of independence is written in…English. Assimilate motherbitches!
How come I have to request to speak english when I call verizon, pseg, and comcast. Since the day I was born 38 years ago, the only language that was spoken in all types of daily business is frigin english. Now, all of a sudden, everything from the damn signs in Lowe’s to the instructions on a side of cookie dough, are frigin bilinqual.

A hundred years ago this countries government had it right. Put into law quotas that limit the number of peoples that can migrate to this country from any one place.
This way, people have no other option other than to assimilate. If you don’t limit the number of immigrants you get what is happening today. Assholes who show up places, expecting somebody in the store to speak spanish and follow them around as a spanish speaking personal shopper. What the F!
Muslims who expect it to be legal for them to refuse not to drive the cab if somebody has alcohol on their person.

But…the more of them that there are, the more they think their numbers allow them to tell the rest of us what to do. I call them “them” because they nor I see them as amercians. They see themselves as russians, slaves to allah, and mexicans.

The principle of assimilation, from the dutch, british, french and germans who founded the “colony” to the germans, africans, italians, irish, and eastern europeans who made it great. They were all forced to assimilate and leave a part of their old world behind.
What this country is turning into is the exact opposite of what the founding fathers sought it to be. We are one nation with a common purpose, to be America.
Not little mexico, little arab world, and little russia with a bunch of whites and blacks thrown in.

Times are definitely changing. My inlaws are immigrants and this growing trend infuriates them. It’s inconceivable to them to come to the United States and not learn how to speak English. Simply inconceivable. Unfortunately, that opinion seems to be disappearing slowly, as reality becomes twisted and those desiring that others speak English begin to be labeled as xenophobic. Doesn’t paint a pretty picture of the future.

Agreed. My wife is a French immigrant who came here in January of 1998, mastered English in 6 months, and has had American-born people she worked with ask her how to spell English words!

What really set her off was, after going through hell and high water to get a working visa from Uncle Sam, she went through the McDonlad’s drive-thru one night and the girl in the window could barely talk to her in English! “Eh, eh… Fries! Eh, eehhh… Eat?”

Over the years we’ve shelled out thousands of dollars for her to get her Green Card, and she will apply for citizenship as soon as she is eligible. What pisses us both off is seeing massive immigrant groups get free rides to set up shop in America and are held to absolutely no standards of admittance!

I’m all for honoring one’s cultural heritage. In fact, we plan on raising our daughter to be French/English bilingual so, at the very least, she can communicate with her grandparents. But as the OP stated, thinking you can just forego the laws and common language of a country you have chosen to live in but somehow choose not to be a part of is bullshit.

And before anyone starts in with, “the U.S.A. has no ‘official’ language” bullshit; do we need a Congressional mandate to declare blue the “official” color of the sky? How about green the “official” color of grass? As the OP stated, it is self-evident; our Constitution is written in it, our currency is printed in it, and learning how to speak it properly is required for all 12 years in our public school system.

I really do wish Congress would grow a pair and make it so, that way all this build-your-own-country-on-U.S.-soil nonsense could be done away with. Do I think that’s going to happen? What do you think?

If you had actually read the post you would have realized that my argument is that white power is 180 degrees the exact opposite of what made this country great. White power believes that only white’s have a right to this land and that only white’s have contributed to it’s greatness.

They also believe that only white’s hold the key to making this country great in the future. I can only guess you are being a jack ass here.

My argument is the exact opposite. It is only with the common contribution of whites, blacks, hispanics, arabs and asians that this country can, as it did in the past, maintain it’s greatness. I seek not so seperate, but to integrate all under the common vail of being an american.

When you allow such a large population, mainly illegal, to come to this country you allow them to dicate their own terms through market and political force. If they don’t want to assimilate, they don’t have to.

If you look on the back of the dollar bill, that latin phrase e pluribus unim (sp?) means from many come one.
Not from many come many, which is what most diversity loonies argue.

Just one more example of why we should have open(er) borders, guys. And if that means a bunch of folks come here who don’t know English very well, and that means you have to listen for five more seconds to phone calls to Verizon Wireless to select a language, then well I guess that’s just the end of the world.

Here’s an idea: instead of getting grumpy about the inevitable influx of foreign folks coming to our country in search of a better life, and feeling threatened (Oh! Our country’s going down the tubes!), howsabout we learn how to speak Spanish ourselves? Yeah, it’s something different than what you’re used to, and it might be hard at first, but after it’s all said and done, you will be stronger for it.

Maybe then you can go ahead and press two for spanish that next time you call Verizon. Or, god forbid, make some friends with spanish-speaking people who are your neighbors or something. Maybe then you can see that they aren’t all that different from you and me.

You know what? Or don’t. It’s not like exposing yourself to new experiences and learning and growing as a person is the meaning of life or anything. Just stay monolingual, it’s not gonna kill you. But realize that this gives you no excuse to be confused and indignant the next time you encounter someone who doesn’t speak english as well they can speak spanish.

Well, all children born, or brought into this country, should be learning english in the schools. There should be no graduation without the required english competency. Just as with anyone else.

I’m not sure how plausible it is, in that case, that spanish would become the dominant language. Of course, that would then piss off the Asian (for example) immigrants who’ve already had to learn english.

No, English should always be the language of schooling and government business. In private enterprise, the government has no business telling a company “english only.”

That’s just the thing here: It’s NOT plausible. Everything in our society is set up for English-speaking people. The multicultural aspect of our society is little more than a fringe benefit to the population of our country at large.

I just hate to see folks feel threatened by this small segment gaining some kind of support. You can take a driver’s license test in several languages in California, can’t you? Wow, like, that’s a problem, right? :slight_smile:
