Congratulations to all who foresaw this. It came down to a point or less in three states, and she will win the popular vote. It’s my opinion that my ballot should count the same as anybody else’s, even if they live in Ohio or Michigan.
But these are the rules and Trump is the winner. In the rawest and most stunning way, the feat is impressive – he did this with no field operation and not the slightest clue about governance or world affairs. It is astounding. My hat is off to him for the sheer enormity of what he’s done.
But forget about lower-class grievance and polling errors and the Clinton Foundation and racism. Forget about the middle finger to the establishment, as if this is something to be giddy about here in the real world, where establishments rise out of necessity in order to deal with complexity. Forget about Clinton. Forget that the stupidest president in American history will take the oath of office in two months. These things all matter, and they will get their due, but they do not matter now.
What matters is this: The next President of the United States stood on a debate stage and lied to the American people about Russian military intervention in the election to his benefit. Again, and let it sink in: The next President of the United States stood on a debate stage and lied to the American people about Russian military intervention in the election to his benefit. He openly regurgitates Kremlin propaganda, even when that propaganda is specific and false and therefore traceable directly back to Sputnik (yes, this happened; again, this happened). He surrounded himself with Putinites. He has never criticized Putin, even when offered the direct opportunity to do so – in fact, he lies in order to paint a rosy picture of the man, as when he said that the assault on Aleppo was aimed at ISIS. He derides NATO and, to the concrete peril of the entire world, Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty (by contrast, his predecessor said of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania that their defense is as important as that of Paris and Berlin: under which of these presidents do you believe Putin is more likely to risk WWIII by invading the Baltics?). He refuses to disclose financial documents that would prove the Russian business ties his son has suggested he has. Not a word that I’ve written in this paragraph is arguable.
The danger we are in is real, and it has no historical precedent. At best we have surrendered global influence on a tectonic scale. At worst – you know.
Go ahead and dismiss this, as the electorate has. It won’t matter.
Incidentally, I – like @anon50325502 – entered into zeb’s bet. This will be my last post on TN. I leave without the slightest hint of bitterness: I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here, and I am utterly certain that it has benefitted me immensely. You are good people and I appreciate all the time you spent sparring with me.
@MaximusB – to your point about this being the internet and quit posturing, I admit to some selfish motive here, too. I’ve been writing and thinking about politics daily for years, professionally and recreationally. I am very much looking forward to doing a lot less of that.
Edit: in closing, Anthony Weiner’s cock pics may well have pushed the deciding point in a presidential election in the three states whose electoral votes decided the election. one hell of a thought.
