As an appreciator of quality stuff and a subscriber of the “buy nice or buy twice” mentality, does anyone have any real experiance with using a Precor AMT elliptical trainer? I am seriously thinking of buying one, just off lease for a deal. They seem to be an elliptical machine evolved to the next level. The motion isn’t limited to a track as is an elliptical machine. The machine supposedly follows the motions of the user. Since I train at home 99% of the time I haven’t been to a gym to try one. This is where you fine folks come into play. So, Who has first hand knowledge of this machine and what do you think of them?
I love the Precor AMT. I’m not even a huge fan ellipticals, but this thing is different. I looked into buying one, but at the time they cost about $8,000.
You can go from a cross-country skiing motion to a pure stepper machine motion just by changing your stride.

Be honest, you were only interested in it because of the name, right?

It’s definitely worth the time and small investment to call around to a few local gyms, ask if they have Precor ellipticals, and spend 10 or 20 bucks for a day pass, and put in good 20 or 30 minutes on one. Or check local equipment dealers to try out floor models. You might not be able to try out the exact model you’re looking to get, but it should still help give a basic idea.
I used to sell exercise equipment in another life. Precor was basically the first company to make an elliptical machine, so in that respect, they’re top of the line. They’ve always been higher-end in general, for price and performance, but at least a few years ago, their home models were fairly prone to needing service calls.
Whatever deal you’re getting, just make sure to test the unit first. If it’s coming off lease, I’m guessing it’s seen some decent use, so understand you might not be getting a 100% healthy machine.

If you’re actually interested in purchasing one I’d look on craigslist for a used one you can normally find one a lot cheaper
Not sure I’d trust the randomness of Craigslist for a piece of equipment like this. Free weights, sure. But something that might’ve seen major wear and tear (or worse, have out-of-warranty malfunctioning electronics), nope.
Yeah, I’m not sure what happened with the multiple posting thing…
Basically what I got going on is a 2010 AMT ( not a regular eliptical). It is low hour I am told, 4000- 4500ish hours. A factory tech trained tech has inspected and restored to 100% functionality. The machine is also throughly cleaned. Other than cosmetic blemishes here and there from use it should be in like new condition. The seller has 9 of these and they were all cherry picked from gyms at a medium sized town.
As far as warranty goes, Precore only warrants their shit to the original buyer, if purchased from an authorized dealer who has transported it and set it up. Even them the warranty is only good for 2 years on the wear parts for a home user. New cost for one of these things is $8k. I can get one for a quarter of that.
Aside from all that “buyer beware” shit, and I can appreciate all the advice thus far, I was looking for anyone who used it. Did it kick ass or did it suck for you. THANKS SERGE. That’s the kind of stuff I was looking for.
Chris, is 4-4.5k hours good? Do you know? I did the math, that’s basically 166 straight days. 3 years is 26,280 hours so 4000 hours does seem fairly small in those terms.

I’d get a concept II rower first. Cheaper, can take a real punishing and when used wisely can send your conditioning through the roof.
