Powerlifting Max Bench Arch

I thought there was a federation that doesn’t allow sumo (hands have to be outside feet).

I don’t think it is classified as powerlifting. I believe it is called strength lifting. They overhead press instead of bench too. Knee wraps are not allowed either.

I think Mark Rippetoe is involved with it / invented it?

I still think floor press would be better for powerlifting. Elbows to floor, dead stop, press. Feet and ass on the floor. No way to ‘cheat’ the lift.

Wide bulk dog grip less ROM let’s go

Still pure press strength, wide grip gives less power transfer, but less ROM, its a tradeoff. I don’t mind adapting for leverage, I lift sumo afterall.

Dudes with good thoracic mobility could still hit a big arch though and support the bar on it

Doesnt change the ROM though, elbows to the floor. And the floor is going to give you plenty of support as it is.

Using t mobility to get any ‘push’ with your butt and feet staying on the floor will have a trivial effect

Floor Press never felt good on my shoulders. It feels easy doing it, but kills the next day

This:

And OHP instead of bench. Strongman rules are also conventional only, in most cases at least.

Yes, he is insane.

Only because you have long arms. Stop making noise and go pull 700 now.

Arms are actually pretty average length, wingspan just a smidge shorter than my height. Just makes me more bitter that I still can’t bench 400.

I don’t know if you can floor press with a bench shirt on. I can’t think of having ever seen anyone do it.

I have no idea, I have no understanding of, nor interest in, equipped lifting.

But in that case, your proposed change wouldn’t be about what would be better for powerlifting, haha.

True. I guess I think It would be best for ~80% of powerlifting. Equipped guys can branch off and keep their sport separate. It basically is anyway.

It’s a funny idea given the history of the sport.

I know right. Started with floor press, just no rules on bum to floor, so all you got was belly heaves. Thus birthing pressing from a bench to prevent ‘cheating’. If only they’d foreseen the acrobatic feats capable when raised up on a bench. All they needed was a bum down rule.

Well, along with that, the idea of equipped lifting “branching off”, when raw is a new thing. You would think raw is what would branch off and become it’s own thing.

I’m fine with either interpretation

Raw isn’t really a new thing, at first it was all raw with knee wraps until squat suits and bench shirts came along. It wasn’t called raw because it was just regular lifting at that point. The sport just changed as time went by and then splintered into a million different feds and divisions.

Compromise can’t work in powerlifting!
