Portland's Inequality Tax

Hey Jas, do you consider the course work you did at your university work?

I do.

So you do that hard work that a lot of people can’t, and now you have a job that the people who could not do that work can not have. and get paid more than them for it.

So what is your problem with all of this?

If your ideas on what other people think are based on this ^ premise, then it’s no wonder you can’t relate to what they think.

The economy is not an entity, doesn’t know anything, and doesn’t satisfy anything.

Nobody here anthropomorphizes the economy the way you have expressed that you think they do.

My problem with the minimum wage is that it doesn’t provide for a basic living, just so the ones who already have can have even more.

Unfortunately, we are arguing with 2 engineers with a combined 3 years of work experience in something other than finance/accounting.

Talk about ignorance.

I know man, it’s fucked up how much my current employer has screwed me. 2 Promotions in 4 years amounting to an additional $20K/year, about $5K in bonuses, $20K in grad school reimbursement, and they’ve paid for $2K in gym equipment.

Praise Jesus, I’ve seen the light!!

You have the same problem that many people have, you think the economy of 1960 and the economy of 2016 are the same. They are not.

Take a look at the Gross Output by Industry in 1960 v. 2015:

http://www.bea.gov/industry/gdpbyind_data.htm

I highlighted some of the larger shifts; including the large drop in manufacturing output.

There was never a time in McDonald’s history that a entry level job there provided a living wage. Where do you get this stuff?

Lol, okay…

Well, then start a business with your own capital at your own risk and pay yourself less. Set an example for us all.

This is called conjecture. According to the article from Pew you posted I’m well into the upper level of household incomes with a family of 3.

I don’t know why you’re so jaded, but, and I mean this sincerely, do yourself a favor and find another line of work or another employer.

Bingo. It costs an employer over $10K per employee in federal regulations alone.

Literally, no one believes this.

Sorry, friend, you are the one that is wrong.

This is complete non-sense. This is like saying the lizard jews control the economy.

I think you get the idea…

We’ll see:

We’ve had this conversation already. @Aero51 just think people should be thrown in jail. He doesn’t know who, but that it should just be done. Smell that freedom:

It’s all here already:

Oh, and I forgot, we have a loan repayment program that’ll pay up to $27K of a student loan over, iirc, 5 years.

*That’s what happens when you work in the private sector, though.

I got close to a 20k raise just last year. I must be getting really screwed over too.

You must be a member of said unnamed cabal that runs the economy.

Here are some fancy charts to look at too…

Here is a very basic example of how an increase in the minimum wage affects a small manufacturing business. This is extremely oversimplified and ignores dozens of other costs.

*28 FTEs was picked so it was roughly $4/unit (40% of total costs) before benefits. That’s pretty conservative too.

COGS will most likely increase as well in the short run given the suppliers labor cost will likely rise as well

Agreed, but I didn’t want to make it overly complicated.

I get it … just wanted to give dude something else to think about … there’s more to the issue than just who it aims to “help”

Ya, a lot of people just don’t seem to understand the macro impact an artificial wage hike has on costs.

Pffft. This is all garbage. It was done on Excel. Learn how to use C++ and then get back to me.

It’s not my fault that I’m just lazy.

I don’t want to get into a debate for the very obvious reason that it will not go anywhere. I’m just going to leave something for you guys to think about.

Having lived and done business in countries of different levels of development in Asia, when shit like this happens, it’s always because you allow the GOVERNMENT too much intervention in the market. This is because you give the government too much power and it usually starts with what you and jasmine are currently asking for.

Time to take my blood pressure meds!

bwahahahaha … nice throw back … that was a great thread … this kid’s problem is he thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room and knows fuckin’ everything about everything.

@Aero51 for the love of all that is holy read “Thinking, Fast and Slow” … you’ll realize you know some about what you do, not nearly as much as you think you do, and less about much else.
