Poloquin style for Bulking

Ryan,

For all the work your doing I would definately include more carbs per day. Specially in the opportunity window, post workout. Maybe, two carb meals following your liquid post workout meal. Maybe even once in a while I would eat a carb meal first thing in the morning. I always do, but for those who don’t tolerate them that well once in a while might not hurt.

P.S. the forum is still actin’ up!!!

DN,

The important statement there is:

“Smart fats: 50 grams from olive, canola, fish, or flax.”

I’d be willing to bet that even though you’re getting your protein from very lean sources, you’ll still get another 25-30g of “incidental” fats in the presence of such a high protein intake. Figuring that in, it puts me at roughly 3.5g protein/lb. I know that I’ve seen him go recommend 2.5g/lb on several occasions, so I definitely wouldn’t doubt that he meant that.

It might be worth dropping him an email to inquire.

Ryan,

I would have to say no if you’re planning on doing a significant carbup (200g+) on each of the three days. If you look at Iron Dog 209, you’ll see that there is a minimum of one insulin spike each day; but that carbs are still kept at 100g or below for five days per week.

Personally, I don’t like the idea of a lower cal carbup for two reasons:

  1. Many of your carbs will be used for energy and not replenishing glycogen stores.
  2. There’s a lesser anabolic effect.

Additionally, my original point was that the regular, non-carbup days were too high in calories. People want to stay lean while putting on size, but they fail to realize that to do so you can’t always be eating above maintenance - regardless of whether carbs are present or not.

Eric,

how about lowering the fat? Maybe from 159, to 130g or so? And have the 2 carb ups of 400 grams of carbs. Or even 3 carb ups of 400g.

What do you guys think is neccesary for a 2 weeks LBM gain?

I was going to try something similar to machine. 3g of carbs per pound. and 2.5g of protien per pound a day.

Thanks for the feedback Eric.
