Poems Published!

I just found out that two poems I submitted for publication have been accepted. It’s my school’s literary magazin, so not a major publication but it still feels like hopping a major hurdle. I have been petrified to submit anything anywhere for fear of rejection, which I know understand is just part of the process. Anyway, I’m ecstatic so felt like sharing everywhere.

TLDR: Cool Story Bro

Roses are red,
Violets are blue
Your poems got published,
Kudos to you.

Good for you.

I am a huge fan of Haiku poems.

I just choked on my apple.

That’s not haiku, dude!

Beef! Congrats!! This is actually the first year where I had the same thing happen. I actuall got two poems and two short stories published in my university’s review. I have started to send work out. Don’t fear rejection, learn from it. Talk to your professors (Im assuming youre in English) about their rejections and how work gets rejected. Its a cruel, twisted, bizarre world out there when it comes to this stuff. You will be shocked. You just have to dive in really. When I get paid for a work, that will be a huge thing for me personally. Good job!

Thanks. Haven’t tried my hand at a Haiku yet. Form poems are something I rarely play with.

Thanks and congratulations to you as well hips. I have two short stories I am revising now before I try finding some outlet to submit them to. Rejection was a big fear but one of my professors insisted that I submit my poems; partly because she enjoyed them but also because she was aware of my hesitance. We talked in class quite a bit about rejection as just a part of the process. Just because they reject a piece may not mean that it isn’t any good, they just may not have room for another surrealist poem etc. I hope to be sending these stories out soon, just need to find some source for who to send them too.

Thanks man! Ive had a few in house publications before but nothing in a review like this and nothing like how people are actually demanding me to read and write.

I actually didnt know how to send stuff out; what the process was or anything. No one thought that information was important I guess when I got my BA. But make sure youre getting involved with groups and attached to emails about publications. My school dept sends out emails with possible prize publications. In fact, I am submitting for the American Poets Prize this friday. I wouldnt have known honeslty if my poetry teacher didnt forward the contest information.

It wasnt until this semster I actually sat down with my teachers and asked to hear there workshop horror stories and rejection tales. Ive had a smooth ride compared to some of the shit these profs have gone through. AS far as rejection, they were telling me if you submit and the reviewer doesnt like where you placed a comma, or that the word “and” doesnt belong there, they will trash it. Just straight up reject you because you shouldnt have used a fucking dash. I have found that some publishers will call you and ask you to make changed (I had someone call me because they wanted to add 3 commas. Not kidding. Of course I said, fuck it, comma away). You can always change it later for a different publication especially if you make your own books/chapbooks.

I have recently had professors add in that you must send your work to three publications and provide proof. That helped with how to go about looking out beyond the university to publish. Most universities have their own reviews, so searching other schools is another way to start. Another GREAT place is pw.org Poets and writers is a fantastic magazine that puts out an issue every 2 months I think with over a 100 places to publish each mag. It updates contests and submissions every time. Just pick 5 and send them out.

I personally am looking towards contest so I know Im writing something they want. Ive already won one. I just submitted 2 more. Good luck with the revisions!

Congrats !

Do they still publish the Poetry or Short Story Writer’s Market books? 20 years ago I bought a copy of the short story book and had a spreadsheet I maintained for all my rejections. I made myself submit to 5 different places per week. Most rejections I got were form letters, but sometimes I’d get a hand written or type written not. This was back in computer infancy (knda).

I did get on poem published in Lite:Baltimore’s Literary Magazine. I was ecstatic until I saw they put a poem by a 9 year old on the same page as mine.

Finally…you gonna post the poems in here or what ???
