So I went out and bought a PS3 Sunday. I didn’t get it so much for the gaming as I did as a replacement BR player - and it is a great BR player.
But then I got to messing around on it, and found the play station network thingy. I created my character, went to the mall, and all that stuff - but I can’t talk to anyone because it takes me forever to type on the onscreen keyboard.
So here are a few of my questions about interacting in Play Station’s cyber community:
Do you have to buy Sony’s keyboard, or can you use regular wireless keyboard?
What about the headset? Can I use my bluetooth headset i got for my cellphone, or do I need Sony’s bluetooth headset?
Do have to attain a certain level before you can enter certain stores? I notice that some users have their screen names in red - and mine is not.
How do you search for clubs? It only pulls up exact matches, and I wold like to browse through some of the clubs just to see what is going on.
I think the cyber community is a cool idea, but I have no clue what I am doing.
Any bluetooth device will work, headset or keyboard. You just pair them with the PS3 and you’re good to go.
I haven’t spent much time in Home, but the best place to start is the Lounge. It’s where all the mini games are. As long as you set up your Playstation ID all you need to do is download the app. and start it up.
Don’t know much about clubs other than you can start your own for a few dollars. Most people i’ve come across in there so far are complete shitheads so this may be the way to go, since you invite only the people you want. You should be able to access all that from the start menu once you’re in Home.

I didn’t see any lounge like you are referring to. You have your apartment, the town square. the theater, the bowling alley, the mall, and 2 or 3 places that are uncharted.
Is the lounge accessible in the games, maybe? I have only one game for the PS3 as of right now - Head Coach 2009, and it is really not geared toward online play.
But thanks for the info. You saved me some money. Now all I have to do is figure out how to pair my motorola headset with the game.

How do you like the PS3 Rainjack ?
I love it. Especially the bluetooth based remotes. No direct line of site problems. I also love the HDMI connection. I can play all of my iTunes library through my home theater.
I like the Home community thing- It will be fun once I can actually talk to other people.
The only big downside is the mind-numbing slowness of the download speeds. It took me 2.5 - 3 hours to download a 950mb demo of WWF last night.
The BR player is phenomenal - I put Dark Night in the player, and it was playing in less than 30 seconds. My old BR player took several minutes, and it would not allow me to access the disc menu at all.

I meant the Bowling Alley. It has some arcade games and pool games on top of bowling. It’s alright, nothing spectacular, but hey it’s free.

Is that common to all Blu-Ray players?

I don’t know about all BR players. I do know that the Samsung I have had for a little over a year took forever to load a disc.
I couldn’t play “Ironman” at all on my player until after I installed a firmware upgrade.
The Dark Knight BR-disc had a live chat feature on the menu - so that might have had something to do with my player not being able to load the menu.

Those are the big differences in BR players. You can end up paying $100 more for a faster processing speed and a better BD Live.

Sounds like the PS3 just makes more sense overall. It updates itself online. I haven’t had one problem with a Blu Ray disc yet.

not to mention the superior graphics card and audio processing that somes in the PS3. It is like getting a more expensive BR player for a deep discount.
I was thinking about getting a low priced BR player, but if it means long delays and getting locked out of future releases because the firmware can’t be upgraded, I’ll pass.
I’d also get the BD remote for it. The PS controller kinda sucks for watching movies, and this one is laid out like a standard dvd remote. $25 at best buy.

I’ll wait until the PS3 drops in price a bit.
If you’re willing to apply for a credit card from www.sonystyle.com, you can get $150 off the PS3. I’m not sure how long that offer lasts, and I know the interest rate on the card is obscene if you carry a balance.

Oh and it plays games too.

These were some of the reasons I went with a PS3 over a stand alone BR player. The performance was just as good if not better and the auto update feature ensures that we’ll be up to date with all the necessary patches and firmware updates.
I know a lot of early BR adopters weren’t too happy when they BR 2.0 spec came out and their player wasn’t going to be compatible with it. The PS3 auto-updated to the BR 2.0 spec a while ago.

The offer is only for US residents.
It will come down in price eventually; or they’ll bundle enough stuff with it to make the $400 price tag appealing.
I can already stream HD movies through my Xbox 360 for the cost of downloading them from a torrent somewhere. But there are currently issues with streaming AC3 sound thru the X360 (stereo works fine, but the experience is diminished), and it would be nice to simply have my favorite movies on a disk, in HD, with the correct sound and all the extras.
But the current inconvenience is not worth 400 bucks to me.

You can upgrade the firmware on BR players. However, you are at the mercy of the manufacturer as to how expediently the upgrades are made available.
I think the biggest problem with slow loading is processor speed, or RAM, or perhaps a combination of both.
The sound out of my old BR player was just as good as the PS3 - I don’t think there is any real advantage for the PS3 wrt audio quality.
I just think (as do several folks in this thread) that the PS3 offers a lot more entertainment bang for your buck than does a regular BR player.
But if you are looking exclusively for a way to get HD quality, there are some very affordable players on the market.
I need to just bite the bullet and buy this damn PS3 already. The prices on TVs are incredible too. I just got back from Frys Electronics to find a 52" Sony Flat Screen LCD for 1299 I think it was. I know the economy sucks, but its also a great time to buy normally expensive shit.
