Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

I agree with you but actually deadlifts are not as often featured as one might think. I think this year so far the German Cups featured car deadlifts both for reps and for max and a frame deadlift. If you add farmer’s to it, it seems that neutral handle deadlifts seem to be important.

Like Dave Tate said, Wide Builds Close…

And it’s not even really about Deadlifting. Its about putting some ass (and less lower back) into it when you bend over. We’re not trying to become masters of the sumo deadlift. We just want more power from the hips.

That aspect does work very well. Especially since I’ve started using touch and go.

Even if that meant there is no way back and you are bound to enter competitions that you will likely zero a lot of events in? I haven’t seen a guy in the German Cups who deadlifts below 200 kg.
One guy I know personally is currently 5th in the ranking in that league. He posted a 232 kg/ 511 lbs axle bench press yesterday! Another one who is currently 8th does a 150 kg strict press and close to 200 kg push press. That is more than what I can deadlift. Obviously I don’t plan on winning German Cups in the near future but that is humbling to see.

Right now I think the better choice is to first get somewhat good at the level I am currently in (don’t worry I am not the guy who says I’ll compete when I hit number xy on lift z) and then switch next year or the year after, more realistically.

Have you won a novice show?

I would win a few of the lesser shows then move up. If I wanted to compete at that level. I’ll enter a contest eventually just for the experience of it but I want a 3,4,5 before I do.

No I haven’t.

I personally jumped right into open class for my first show, and got my ass handed to me. Took last. Was a shot to the nads considering I had no idea how I’d do, and I considered myself kinda strong (225kg deadlift, 140kg overhead, etc.).

Ultimately, I was still able to perform “enough” at the show to stay relevant on the score board. Despite the placement, It only made me want to get better, and that’s what I did each contest after the next. Definitely made me train harder, and have more respect for myself, as I believed I belonged at the higher level, so I wouldn’t sell myself short and compete in novice or something.

Truth be told it’s really up to you as we are not the same and come from different backrounds+aren’t at the same level as I was per say at my initiation into competing. Still, I think it’s not that serious and you should just do the german cup :)))

If given the choice, go heavier. Training for it will make you stronger.

1 Log lift (Clean every rep)
8 @ 80 kg in 1 minute - ties PR but more comfortable than last time.
3 @ 80 kg - No sense in pushing it any further, Just practising.
2 @ 90 kg (clean once) - rather easy

2 lat pull down
2 x 12 very light to not tax my hands

3 Yoke walk
155 kg x 25 Meter in 10.60 sec
200 kg x 25 Meter in 12:28 sec
200 kg x 25 Meter in 12:36 sec
Lighter run back

4 Farmer’s walk

  • 2 x ca. 40 Meter @ 95 kg per Hand
  • Static hold for 1 min @ 65 kg per hand
  • Ca. 35 meter @ 65 kg per hand (to get handles back)

Notes:

  • Body is pretty beat up. QL was bugging me upon waking today while it was nearly gone yesterday. Weird. Forced ne to be cautious especially on the walking events. The belt helps to conceal it some. Didn’t really bother me during the log lift.
  • grip was not as good as I would have liked but oh well.

Don’t have a video of the 80 kg for reps set but here ist the 90 kg set, just to show the improvements as this was pretty easy even though it ties a PR.

You make a good point @Koestrizer. Maybe wait until you can reliably podium at novice level.

You all made some very good points and I want to thank each of you for taking the time and contributing.

I am still a little between chairs but I thought a lot about it and I won’t enter the German Cups yet.
So far I have just taken on every contest that I could get my hands on and never cared how I perform compared to others. For the first time I actually do care now. I want to be good. Better than most of the other guys. I like that feeling of wanting to be competitive.

The German Cups are so heavy that right now I would zero most of the stuff that isn’t an overhead press. I am not relevant for competition in the slightest.

The German Cups are still my goal but I think the main reason for entering right now would be that I am impatient. That is not the right reason.

I think that is a wise decision Mate.
Get some more practice look at the German Cup and their events. When you can do most of the events, not saying you should be competitive but at least get some work in, then it’s time to step up.

Great work on those presses, looked fairly easy  Great job
