Today was not the day. That is okay overall. It was early to try this but I kind of forced Paul’s hand there because I am going on a long hike (7 days) next week and he thought it is early but worth a shot. I actually came very close on some of these! I will get it though. I know I will. I am absolutely ready to put my full focus on this for the rest of the year and dedicate my training effort solely to this goal! This is my lifetime overhead goal and it would be (will be) absolutely insane to get this.
Despite my hiking ‘experience’ I am ready to admit that I underestimated this a lot. Komoot listed these hikes as hard to very hard, requiring excellent conditioning and I kinda ignored that thinking ‘ah come on they are adressing the average guy here’(as the 122 kg strength athlete with the 20 kg backpack…). On day one I got a big blister which is bad luck because I usually never get these. To that came some other pains (mainly feet) and today every step hurt in some capacity.
I don’t know if I can or want to keep going tbh. Although I don’t really know if there are alternatives. Feet in shreds and I am very deeply exhausted.
Today’s track was really beautiful! Much nicer than the other days. My feet hurt less overall (body has probably concluded it’s better to dull this out.
So I am currently debating if I want to do one more tour or return back to start. I would really like to do the final tour of this long distance hike but would have to skip a bit inbetween and public transport is a nightmare so it might also just not be possible. Plus I would save money cutting it short a bit. At the same time that feels a bit like quitting early which does not bode well with my stubborness. I will have to consult the internet a bit more if it is reasonable at all to continue or not.
Interesting fun fact: I am sleeping in a monastry tonight. Let’s all hope I am not struck by lightning or something (sorry @alex_uk).
Result:
In 4 days:
103,7 km
2584 m
3001 m
147.500 steps
It was logistically too much of a hassle to continue because it would have been 7 km to get to a bus and then I would only be able to start the actual tour in the early afternoon and would arrive way too late. So I begrudgingly called it hear, took the busses to get to the start point, I left my mum’s car. Turns out that was a really lucky call because (without any signs a few days prior) they used the parking lot I left the car for some kind of event that weekend and wanted to tow my car! So turned out for the best.
Also I got abresions so bad from the friction of the bagpack, the sweat and everything that I actually bled onto the bed spread. So that is annoying as hell. Inner thighs were fine because I used the vaseline preemptively there but inner arms were painful and the blood came from back and hips.
So all in all the tour was beautiful! I would like to do similar things again in the future but I also learnt a bunch of valuable lesseions here;
I packed WAY too heavy (about 20 kg). I don’t know what I was thinking. I was probably still in the headspace from my Sweden tour, where I really needed to bring everything for survival. But here I actually crossed villages regularly and had just way too much stuff. I don’t feel the weight on my back as burden per se but once the kilometers pile up beyond 20, I think it was the factor that wrecked my feet so bad.
oh my god, hiking sticks are a game changer! I thought that was something for old people but my improvised wandering sticks saved my butt! Definitely getting some for my birthday,
I got humbled a bit. Most hikes were labeled as hard to very hard and requiring very good conditioning. Well as a 123 kg strongman I might not exactly fit that description.
I didn’t mind being alone (which is a BIG personal improvement), especially in nature, I quite enjoy it. But I would prefer to have someone with me. Just to encourage and support each other.
Good to be back. We are starting easy into the week, especially ok everything legs because of the hiking and today I realized that is a very smart idea, haha. I did feel it still. So next week the new training block will officially start.
