I will do better. Need to cry first but I will do better…
To be fair I think it would be pretty hard to stall completely on a dip rep and still finish the rep. when ever I stall on my last dip, no matter how hard I push I just come back down.
Unrelated strongman question. Any options to prepare for a yoke walk if you dont have access to a yoke ?
Uh, how about “for the entertainment of internet strangers”?
That’s a tricky one. A chain yoke would somewhat work, although I don’t buy into it for the purpose of building a quick yoke run for a strongman competition. I’ve seen people do heavy loaded marches on the spot but in the end of the day yoke and log are two very difficult things to replicate imo.
@T3hPwnisher any ideas?
When I didn’t have a yoke, about the only thing I could really do is focus on moving my feet quickly with short choppy steps while under load. Keeping the head up is key too. In that regard, farmer’s aren’t a bad choice to get some of the skills for yoke. From there, it’s just about knowing how to keep a strong core/brace and dealing with how much it sucks.
Yoke is funny that way. You wanna spend most of your time training LIGHT, so that you get used to being fast. You train heavy, you learn how to be slow.
This is exactly my approach as well
The gym goes have farmers so that is deff an option. What about training for the weight of the yoke, or is it just a case of get under it and get it done.
I’m REALLY a bad dude to talk to about that, because my approach to the yoke is exactly how I blew out my ACL, but 500lbs on a yoke is way different than 500lbs on a barbell. It really doesn’t “crush” you, since it’s so widely distributed, and meanwhile, heavy plodding yoke walks just make you bad at yoking. If you feel like you have a core/structural weakness, it’s worth doing some stuff for torso strength, and maybe some time doing overloads in the rack would be good, but it’s honestly a rare situation at the amateur level that someone loses out on the yoke because it was too HEAVY. It’s usually that they weren’t fast enough.
This is exactly why I do talk to you about it. Getting an insight from someone who has run the road before you is always valuable, positive negative.
I find it funny but also like that neither you or @Koestrizer asked why I wanted to know. Its maybe that the answer is more obvious than the question. LOL
Ah, that’s because the question was “If YOU don’t have access to a yoke” vs “if I don’t have access to a yoke” ![]()
I can easily talk about myself, haha.
@simo74 so when is it and did you sign up yet? ![]()
1 April and not yet.
It is right when my parent are visiting and 2 days before we all go on holiday to Bali. Need to discuss with the wife/boss first.
Exciting!
Thumbs pressed that the boss goes easy on you!
What are the events?
Holy cow, strongman is cool too, but Bali is awesome! I’m doubly excited for you.
I think the boss chat should go OK. I don’t need to change my current training plan or days to train for it. And mum and dad being here may work in my favour as dad would be really interested in coming to watch, so would most likely come with my son.
It is a novice or introductory comp, meant for people who have never done one before, so weights are lighter. It is being run at the same gym I did a novice powerlifting comp at a few years back now, so I know the guy running it and it is close to home (20 mins).
Events are
- Yoke & Viking Press Medley
- Farmers Carry & Sandbag Medley
- Deadlift Medley
- Implement To Shoulder Medley
Event 1: Yoke & Viking Press
Carry the yoke 15m, return with the yoke for 15m then move onto the Viking Press to complete as many reps as possible within the time limit.
Event 2: Deadlift Diversity
Complete 2 repetitions on each of the 3 implements in the series as many times through as possible within the time limit.
Event 3: The Farmers Carry & Sandbag
Farmers Carry 15m, Sandbag Carry 30m, Farmers Carry 15m within the time limit
Event 4: The Implement To Shoulder Medley
Attempt to shoulder a series of 6 implements within the designated time limit for this event finale
Weights in the table below. I am 92 right now so should be able to squeeze under 90 with no issues.
You’ll have no issue with that yoke weight.
I am machine gunning holidays this year to make up for 3 years of covid lock down shite.
how does a yoke weight transition to squat ? I saw 210 and though, hmmmm thats a bit over my squat right now.
It doesn’t, and that’s one of those very common mistakes first timers make, so it’s good you’re asking the question now.
The only commonality between them is that the bar is on your back. Beyond that, they’re more different than they’re similar that it’s worth ignoring all of it.
At my first competition, there was a 500lb yoke. I had, at that point, squatted 525 for 3 or 5 in the gym. I thought I was going to murder it.
I looked like a chump
Meanwhile, there were dudes there that had something like a mid 300s squat that were SPRINTING with the yoke.
You just need to keep a strong torso under load. You won’t be squatting with the weight.
I fully expect to be able to say this also, if I give this a go.
