Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

Okay it seems to make sense for me to get checked.
I would imagine a doctor had that idea at some point and just didn’t tell me because the results were benign. It’s possible that this isn’t the case but I would be startled, given my medical history.

I wouldn’t want to fight a war at 24°C in the Bahamas either.

Jusr when I move, haha.

Yeah, war is terrible regardless of weather

It’s just that extreme temperatures make an extremely terrible thing worse

Looking forward to doing this in the next couple of years. Usually every winter in the Midwest there is at least one spell like the one happening right now (-30 °C) where the conditions are cold enough to warrant a wind chill advisory. Just not an emergency situation like -50 °C that occurred a couple years ago.

While I do think that those born in colder climates may have greater likelihoods of tolerating frigid conditions, I think it is hard to generalize because the Russian population is so diverse (e.g. different gene selection mechanisms among different Siberian groups alone). Plus this characteristic probably relies on a multitude of factors. I only have this theory because of my own cold tolerance, so take n = 1 with a grain of salt.

I religiously supplement with at least 5000 IU/day Vitamin D3 and on my last blood test was still barely in the normal range. Of course I don’t live in a year-round super warm, sunny place, but I also get outside every day for a not insignificant amount of time.

Okay that explains why, even if I have a deficiency, I didn’t notice any difference when I was taking vitamin D3 capsules. Mine have 480 IU per pill and I took one a day…
Is the amount necessary connected to body weight and metabolism factors (like medicine)?

4000-5000 IU/day is about right for most people. Don’t go for 10000 IU/day which some articles recommend unless you get blood tests to follow up that you aren’t getting too much.

Okay thanks. Maybe I have underestimated these things and should look more into them.

Yeah, 480 IU is almost nothing. Most people are deficient as long as they aren’t spending literally all day outdoors in direct sunlight.

Seems like we took a wrong turn somewhere during evolution then, haha.
I have a phone call with a doctor tomorrow, who recently did a blood check on me. I’ll ask him if that included vitamin D3 or if he maybe can arrange for that to be checked. He is a specialist, so probably no but your guy’s tips come at a convenient date!

It flummoxes me with long-term patient no one sees any utility in starting to gather clues and plotting trend lines over time. That’d be how I solve harder cases. Ideally, you’d do this with healthy individuals too. If you see a consistent trend in declining red blood cells for instance, something is on the horizon.

Yeah, I know. “cost”.

That is truly baffling.
I don’t even think the main issue is cost. Just the inability of doctors in different fields to work together. There is absolutely zero communication between doctors.
Well and then you need to find a doc who gives a shit in the first place. I had a consultation with my psychiatrist a few weeks ago. Because they were being digitalized he didn’t have access to my files. I know and absolutely understand that he can’t possibly keep track of everything people tell him by memory. But he basically didn’t know who he was talking to. Besides my name in his calendar, he didn’t know anything about me.

I’m putting more blame on the healthcare system than any individual doctor but these things seem to be the norm.

I had a very different experience with cancer treatment. All doctors involved were part of a well oiled machine and everyone was doing their part. The whole attitude was a different one. Those people have my utmost respect. Working on a children’s oncology station sounds like a nightmare to me and a huge burden. For every story like mine there’s a bunch of stories with a sad ending.

15.01.

Pretty down in the dumps the last few days and today especially. Enough so to make my therapist feel compelled to drop the big S question apparently. But no worries there, folks.
Also sleep deprived but I feel it’s getting mood to list that, so I will probably stop doing it.

1 oh squat
Failed set one.
Repeat set one
Failed 2nd rep in set 2, which could have been nasty.
Aborted mission. First time I failed an oh squat.

I was constantly falling forward.

2 log lift (clean once)
3 x 5 @ 103,5 kg - PR!

Had a near passout on the final set. Saw some stars but ended up being fine after catching my breath.

3 vertical jumps
5 x 3

4 bent over row
3 x 12 @ 105 kg

5 hollow holds
3 x 35 sec.

Notes:

  • to turn a session like this around on a day like today was a big fuck you into the darkness. I am certainly a tough motherfucker. I wish I was in other aspects of my life than log lifts but this last stance I am defending with absolutely everything I have.
  • Not the highest quality of lifting but I’ll absolutely take it. The last set shouldn’t have been this hard but I somehow wasn’t getting good leg drive.
  • we will take oh squats out of the program until I can leave the dungeon. Which should be next week.

Fantastic to read this and really sorry to hear about what you’re going through at the moment.

I’m so sorry about the dark times, stay strong!

Thanks a lot guys. The times have truly been dark for a long, long stretch.
Still, you can always be surprised and fall another level deeper. If you had a taste of what’s even below that level, you can get carried away pretty fast.

The good thing about a day like today is, that it still only has 24 hours. One day at a time. And I didn’t indulge in self medication. Also a win. Not that that is a constant problem but certainly a threat.

1 hang snatch high pull
4 x 3 @ 80 kg

Fun.

2 log lift (clean once)
5 x 2 @ 101 kg

3 deadlift
3 x 6 @ 157,5 kg (went power bar and beltless again)

Felt surprisingly heavy but that’s probably just different feedback bc of bar and no belt

4 floor press
2 x 12 @ 95 kg
1 x 11 @ 95 kg

5 meadows rows
4 x 8 @ 35 kg

Notes:

  • lighter on the log this week to give me a chance to adapt. We will be going heavier again next week. Glad about the change of pace today, I did not have anything heavy in me. 101 kg felt heavy already.
  • my floor press has really come a a long way. Considering I usually bench a good bit more, 95 kg for this many reps is not bad

I’ve lived to regret the words “it can’t get worse” too many times. Been figuratively shocked sometimes about how much empty air was beneath the floor I was on as it were. It’s weird that it works to focus on that but that thought offers me solace too.

Definitely not the lowest I have been currently but you know how the thought dynamic goes, once you start the downward spiral.

I’ll be honest, I’ll rarely think myself worse. It’s just being low makes it easy to stay low and get lower. Because, at least I, never feel as if I get any rest. It’s like chronic pain. Of the brain.

Well put

According to Dave Tate and Andy Baker, people usually hurt themselves more often during multiple reps sets that 1RM, because they are more tensed/focused/whatever

Ouuuch now that’s frightening lol!

Yeah I never checked my bloodwork but I still take 5000 UI daily during the winter. It’s like creatine, it’s just too cheap and proven efficient to pass on

That’s the spirit mate. Indeed, you turned into a shitty day into a PR, that’s amazing!

OVH is also a wild animal. Did 2 x 100kgs on pure concentric not so long ago, but last week I was having trouble with 60 kgs lol. If you’re stiff, you have tired shoulders, arms, back, core… It’s a lift that depends on many factors so yeah it’s more unpredictable
