It was literally a command to genocide because of their depravity.

I agree this is morally serious and not something to minimize. But calling it ‘literally genocide’ imports a modern category that can flatten what the text is doing. The passages describe a time-bound act of judgment tied to the conquest of Canaan, not an ongoing mandate to eliminate ethnic groups. Also, the conquest narratives use ancient war rhetoric that often sounds totalizing, and the same books sometimes describe survivors afterward, which is one reason many readers think the language is not always meant as a literal report of total extermination.

As for ‘depravity,’ the Bible presents the conquest as judgment on entrenched evil, but it also judges Israel the same way when they become corrupt, so it’s not ethnic superiority. And for Christians, the controlling ethic for God’s people now is Jesus, who teaches enemy love and rejects conquest as the way God’s kingdom advances.

Why double posts, ruining the experience of people’s knowledge..fix it up please t nation

Because modern times is significantly different than any era before that.

I agree. Christianity and the academic nature it had developed played a role.

There’s a case to be made why scientistific revolution happened in Europe and not in the Middle East. It maybe could happened in islamic world too, if the golden age would have continued. There was a big debate going between avicennian rationalists abd religious mysticists. Latter won.

But this is a completely different discussion (why Europe did have these spurs of development, but Middle East and Asia did not). I know a fair bit about it, but I don’t want to derail too much.

That’s not how it works. There are plethora of studies about islam. They give different perspectives and narratives to the subject. Some may be more flawed than others, but then you’re free to criticize them.

Like for example, I googled the Sword and the Scimitar, it was mainly accused from the same flaws Samuel P. Huntingtons Clash of Civilizations has been criticized. But it’s not corrupt or untrue as study. I’ll read it and make my own mind about it.

I probably need to reread the bible and read the quran too to answer this.

Yet not all branches of islam do this. Like in Christianity, there’s variation in religion, in teachings and in practices.Tatars, Sufis or Ahmadiyya -seems vastly different than Shias and Sunnis of Middle East.

As an anecdote, here’s an quote from important figure in Ahmadiyya, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, for me this is not far from Christianity’s teachings:

There are only two complete parts of faith. One is to love God and the other is to love humankind to such a degree that you consider the suffering and the trials and tribulations of others as your own and that you pray for them.[42]

The variation increases when we go in history. Types of government, tolerance towards other religions and all other aspects did vary greatly within medieval Europe, as they did in the islamic world.

Disclaimer: I’m not an expert in islamic faith/world, so I propably read more about it this year, partly inspired by this discussion.

I could not edit my post for some reason, but wanted to add this:

I know there was terrible deeds done by muslims during the middle ages and new age, but these deeds (rapes, slavery, mass killings) seemed to be quite a norm everywhere until 19-20th century (and beyond?).

Has anyone read The Source, by James Michener? I was maybe 18 when I read it, so a callow youth, and I can’t speak to its impact on an adult with more life experience, but at the time I found it fascinating. I didn’t view it as focused on Judaism, as from my perspective it covered the birth of both Christianity and Islam, but again, it was a long time ago and at the time I sucked through books at a rate that probably prohibited deep thought. Anyway, Michener loves his research! And it was impactful to me.

Through the discoveries of modern archaeologists excavating the site of Tell Makor, Michener vividly re-creates life in an ancient city and traces the profound history of the Jewish people—from the persecution of the early Hebrews, the rise of Christianity, and the Crusades to the founding of Israel and the modern …

It was just a joke. Surely any kind of oligarchy would turn ugly.

How come such a well read and educated person such as yourself completely discounted what I said, when in actual fact I said the Rothschild’s. That other stuff about them being wizards does sound far fetched but the worlds run by families already. I know I’m right lmao.

I’m assuming you said that tongue in cheek, knowing full well, that’s exactly what goes on already. The worlds at the mercy of the world reserve bank which is owned by who exactly? We have all these western “democracies” owing money and because of that being controlled by who? I know I sound like an absolute kook when I say Baal sorcerors like the Rothschild’s materialise the wealth to be lent and therefore countries economies fall prey to.

I’m finding it difficult to find posts of interest directly related to the thread when you and your buds take it off course. Add them on Facebook. This may have something to do with the format sucking, and perhaps that will be the end of me here. But failing the Facebook alternative, start a thread for you and your mates

Please, I beg you brother come DOWN here for a visit (H-Town).

Folks from my neck of the woods fry fish as a weekend family dinner. AND we have some good (but scattered) mom and pop shops that make Paczki near the downtown I-10 area.

And it goes DOWN when Renaissance Fest comes to the NRG stadium.
