I agree this is morally serious and not something to minimize. But calling it ‘literally genocide’ imports a modern category that can flatten what the text is doing. The passages describe a time-bound act of judgment tied to the conquest of Canaan, not an ongoing mandate to eliminate ethnic groups. …

I could not edit my post for some reason, but wanted to add this: I know there was terrible deeds done by muslims during the middle ages and new age, but these deeds (rapes, slavery, mass killings) seemed to be quite a norm everywhere until 19-20th century (and beyond?).

Has anyone read The Source, by James Michener? I was maybe 18 when I read it, so a callow youth, and I can’t speak to its impact on an adult with more life experience, but at the time I found it fascinating.
