When I do leg day my legs are burning for days. When I do shoulder or bis/tris my arms are burning for a day. But for whatever reason when I do chest day, even though I go to failure multiple times, my pecs are never sore even that same day after an hour or so. I’m seeing gains so I’m not too concerned, but wondering if it’s a sign I’m not doing enough to maximize gains. Anybody have thoughts?
Well what are you doing for chest?
exercises/weights/reps/sets/rest?
Going to failure does not mean growth. Maybe you need to switch up what your doing.
Thanks for the response. Today I just did barbell bench press sets 4x 15 really struggling on the fourth set, but the same thing happened last week when I did set after set of bench with my bro pushing me. My bench max is finally up to 225 now. I was maxing at 190 when I started going regularly months ago so I’ve seen progress. Still not back to my peak in my mid 20s (I’m 42 now) but I’m getting there
Well if your progressing then there is no issue. Your chest has prob become adapted to the load your putting on it.
You didn’t really list what your doing except for one exercises. If that’s all your doing is 4 sets of 15 then I would not expect too much fatigue unless your lifting very heavy in a low rep range. What your experiencing is a muscular endurance prob.
If you want better help you need to provide better answers.
Is 225 your 1 rm max ? Or thats what your doing for sets of 15?
if it’s a sign I’m not doing enough to maximize gains.
Does that matter?
Like, think of the risk/reward here. What you’re doing is currently getting results. If you decide to tweak it in pursuit of maximizing results, there are 2 outcomes.
You get better results OR you get worse results.
Then, consider what the outcome of “maximized gains” would be over a 10 year timespan compared to “gains”. And then consider the outcome of “no gains” over that same timespan, because your constant tweaking meant abandoning a working plan to experiment with a bunch of non-working plans in pursuit of the maximized plan.
Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good here.
What kind of Maximal Gains are you trying to get? A stronger bench press or a bigger chest? Or both?
And what kind of progress are you seeing? Your Bench Press going up or your Chest getting Bigger? Or both?
One rep max.when I got home I decided to throw up a few sets of butterflies with free weights. Went to bed feeling fine. Woke up this morning feeling destroyed. Thanks for the advice! Maybe I just need to do extra sets
What weight are your sets of 15?
