I’d focus less on the religion aspect and more on the peer-group aspect and what motivates even second and third generation Muslim Americans, or even white and black and whatever else Americans, to adopt the ISIS mentality.

The core ISIS members, who have been fighting their whole lives need to be made extinct. They are already done for. This needs to be done without recruiting any more foreign fighters for them, which can return home, and radicalizing any lone wolves who generally have empty lives and could fill them up with jihad.

You’re mentality is like saying we need to kill all Christians just because some decide to bomb abortion clinics.

Yes, absolutely I agree that controlling the information is critical to defeating ISIS. I have been for cyber counter-terrorism from the beginning. I also suggested we lock down the money, take out their communications, and hacking and destroying any web pages and twitter accounts and what have you. I forgot how sensitive some people get when their religion is used as an example.

My point was it is not about religion at all. Most of the ISIS members don’t have an understanding of the Quran or any of the Islamic texts. They have been indoctrinated into an interpretation of Islam mainly through ISIS propaganda, although Wahhabism has been promoted heavily in the region for the past 40 years effectively setting the stage.

Listening to shit like “it’s not a religion of peace at all” from primarily right-wing commentators is promoting that interpretation of Islam effectively legitimizing it in a region where most people have at best the equivalent of a fourth grade education and have been indoctrinated from an early age. They don’t realize that a whole other reality is out there.

Islam is a 7th century AD religion. None of the desecrations you mention would have the slightest theological impact on a deceased Muslim, much less a “martyr.” I suppose it’s easier to hate a religion you don’t understand rather than reading its holy texts.
