Palumboism - Causes and Case Studies

Palumbo, pre-affliction, looking like future pro material, training at The Mecca of the East!

What a shame–he had so much potential.

the little guys form. its so, mind boggling perfect. O_o 2;00

Being 52 and training 30+ yrs, I can say that my waist has not slowly increased in diameter. I am 5’7" with a waist at 29-30 inches, which is the same size it was when I was 20.

I’m glad this thread has been revived, a little over a year after I started it. Unfortunately someone derailed it awhile back.

Maybe some more pictures of recent palumboism patients are what’s needed for a comeback?
Also that video was the cheesiest thing I have ever seen in relation to strength sports. It was amazing!

The other guy in the video, Jim Pellechia, had an interview with T-Nation years ago in which he flat out stated he shouldn’t give honest numbers about his lifts with good form.

I remember seeing ‘The Iron Bull’ in various muscle magazines back in the day when I was much younger (and relatively clueless), and always wondering “if this guy’s so damn strong, how come he’s not out winning world’s records?”

Perhaps because of his refusal to do bench presses with his ass on the bench, without spotters lifting the weight with him, and doing full range of motion.

JP (from old TN interview): “Why should I give someone a true number?”

Great vids. Much better than those boring ass vids produced today. Guy has no legs.

Yeah I actually liked watching Palumbo lift. He had pretty decent form in the video, amazing muscular development, he lifted pretty big weights, and you could tell he really knew the mind-muscle connection. Yes, it was unlike the boring tirades people put up these days featuring incessant talk about the most mundane things (eg, who is natural or “I showed everyone else I could do it” ra-ra-ra rap) or barking and bellowing to the camera (eg, Hodge Twins).

I thought this thread was a joke when I first clicked on it but now in retrospect although I was aware of that look I realize i just never gave it enough thought. I now realize it is an actual condition.

Not sure what everyone is arguing about because I think everyone is correct to a point(and aren’t we all part of the T Nation family here, trying to learn and help each other out lol).

Anyway my belief is that it’s due to a combination of things that everyone mentioned.

I believe some of it is from aging in general. I don’t use juice but noticed that over the years my arms have lost an inch in size though no strength, and same with my legs. My waist isn’t as flat and tight as it used to be and strangely my head looks bigger and neck smaller lol.

My skin also looks thinner even when my body fat climbs. I’m pushing 53 and been training 40 yrs . Although I still look at least 10-15 yrs younger than I am(depending on who you talk to and how much sleep I had) I can still see these age related changes that I attribute to lowered testosterone and GH levels and my overall declining hormonal profile. When you’re young your appearance is just the opposite. I had 18 inch arms, a thick powerful looking neck and a head that matched my body up until about 15 yrs ago.

I think steroids GH, insulin etc., give the same benefits as youth and accentuate the large sized extremities compared to torso along with the nice skin etc. You get older and the juice doesn’t help as much as much as it used to, and many times these guys increase the amounts they take to compensate for aging and injuries. The organs and stomach grow from it. Then age sets in and they cut back on drugs ,and things shrink except for the gut and face which is permanent.

I also believe massive amounts of drugs also contribute to the advanced aging look. I believe that massive amounts of drugs take a toll on a person along with the extreme dieting and everything else that someone puts their bodies through when they compete. Its a rigorous and unhealthy regimen to keep repeating year after year.

Throw in some excessive tanning and there you have it.

Then again I could be just talking out of my ass lol. But that’s what I believe are the main contributing factors to Palumboism.

Sounds like a complete ass! I was impressed that he basically did an isometric hold for his biceps while deadlifting though lol

His spotter “Jake the Snake” (lol) looks chunkier than I remember …

Love the tights - I kinda miss 90’s gym fashion … It always brightens my day when a guy shows up in the gym looking circa 1992 …

Love the 90’s

It’d be great if this was shown as a TV commercial instead of things like that insanity crap!

I love those old workout vids with shawn. Especially like the ones with him and kevin.

I always thought Shawn Ray should have placed better than he usually did, he didn’t seem to have any glaring weaknesses.
Other than lacking height and mass compared to the monsters he had to share the stage with, that is.

Umm, you KNOW he had no glaring weakness… because he didn’t. Neither did Chris Duffy, Flex Wheeler, Dennis Newman, and a few others. Then Dorian came, and every Tom, Dick, and Harry decided to do whatever it takes to reach an offseason 300 pounds and in the process, wreck their lines and symmetry.

Aside from the huge GH gut, maybe prolonged effects of polycythemia?

Their vascularity gets all screwed up and they start looking like the spider veins junkies get once they quit collapsing veins and start lifting.
