Please tell me I am not the only sci fi nerd who is just geeking out about this movie? Catching it with the old man this weekend. Also a HYUGE Del Toro fan so I have big expectations for the visuals here.
I’ve heard some great pre-release things from this, absolutely great things. I hear there’s not much “wisdom” to it per se, but for an action movie people I know are saying that this is one of the grandest, most ridiculously satisfying action film in recent years. I am really looking forward to seeing this in the cinema and am expressly awaiting it’s release. Shall put up a proper review here once the time comes.
Is this movie that started as a fan made trailor and some director saw out and vowed to make a full length feature?
kaiju vs mecha oh yeah

Nope, A screenwriter named Travis Beacham thought up the idea and brought it to Del Toro. Del Toro was set to direct a film inspired by the Lovecraft novella “At The Mountains of Madness”, but that fell through, so he got the green light and signed on for Beacham’s robot/monster idea and it went on to become Pacific Rim.
Conversation between my friend and I yesterday:
Him: “Think this movie will be any good?”
Me: “There’s a gigantic robot using an oil tanker as a mace against some titanic demon beast.”
Him: “What does that alone just like make the movie for you?”
Me: “Yes.”
Little known fact: They were originally going to call it “Battleship 2” until they realized how badly that movie sucked.
Personally I think they should have went with, “Transformer-ish, Battle for Stoner Cash.”
I wonder if Rihanna will be in this one too…

Right on. Had heard that Del Toro was tying to do a Lovecraft adaptation but it kept falling through. Had also read that he was pushing HARD to be behind the wheel on the Pet Cemetery remake, but that fell through as well.
Do you know what fan trailer turned blockbuster I’m taking about?
What confuses me about the concept (at least what I know), is why do the humans have to be in the big robots to drive them? Wouldn’t you just make them drones?

And why the hell do they need 2 pilots doing the same thing. I’m hoping they’ll take the time to explain in the movie lol.

Left brain right brain theory
Looks more like a video game then a movie to me lol

The short answer: because nobody wants to watch drones kill things. I don’t. People have to die to satiate our lust for blood!
I like sci-fi but this looks like a dvd rental or download
Part of me is convinced this will suck. Then the Geek in me wants to relive the moment Godzilla did a Karate move on his evil robot twin. Yes I’ll be in line to see this…yeah the big fucker on the end of the line will be 460
I think the biggest flaw is if massive beasts started attacking, giant machines shaped like people are probably pretty damn close to the bottom of the list of things we would actually make to fight them. It literally makes no sense, they can’t possibly be an economical use of resources in that situation.
I’m 99% sure a more practical machine wouldn’t make a movie as awesome though, so I’m willing to go with it!

You might be thinking of Mama, about the two girls living in the woods with the ghost. It was a short film that Del Toro saw, then he produced the big picture (both were directed by the same guy).
P.S. - I got it from Redbox over the weekend. Neat concept, but disappointing. It’s PG-13, so it felt like a basic SyFy channel ghost movie.

Fixed. ![]()
So stoked to see this, for all the reasons already brought up. Del Toro is an awesome filmmaker and “Transformers vs. Cloverfield” has major entertainment potential.

Well sure but if you can get by the fact that it makes no sense it will be great!
Take gravity and earths atmosphere for instance. Both could not exist as they currently do for a large machine and a beast of that size to fight the way that they do in the commercials. I love Sci-Fi but I just can’t watch a movie that disregards basic physical laws. At least say that the the machine is made of magic or something. Better yet have it taking place on another planet.
For those of you already trying to explore movie holes in regard to science and physics please do the opposite of ‘grow up’ and grab the popcorn and just enjoy.
