I blacked out and fell on my face last night. I don’t know what the hell caused it, but around 12:30 I was getting ready to get into bed, and slammed my face into the dresser and then hit the floor. I woke up the moment I hit the floor cursing and thinking that an intruder had clocked me.
I was not drunk. I had eaten a big buffalo burger and had one pint with a couple friends at around 9:30. Got home at 11:30. Fell asleep on the couch and got up to turn in at 12:30. Next thing I knew, I’m laying on the floor with cuts on my forehead and nose, a knot on my forehead, a bloody nose, and whiplash. My neck is killing me today. Feels like I took a hell of a punch in the face.
This happened to me once about 10 years ago, but at the time I was standing in a kitchen talking to a chick, and the next thing I know she’s standing over me with an ice cream scoop in her hand screaming. I’m lying there thinking what did this crazy bitch do to me. For the record, she had done nothing to me, but she had been getting me a bowl of ice cream when I fell over.
Both times it was summer, both times I had gone to the gym and mowed the lawn earlier in the day, and both times I had only consumed ONE beer with a meal. I doubt I was dehydrated, and doubt it would cause me to black out like that if I was.
After the first time, a doctor ran a bunch of tests on me which didn’t reveal anything, so he said it was probably stress related. That just pissed me off. I told him he was a quitter and that was a weak answer and I asked how the fuck is stress going to make my mind and body shut down in the middle of a conversation.
Any ideas? Health insurance doesn’t cover much as it used to, so before I spend $1000’s on tests, I want to hear if anyone else has experienced this, and what may have caused it. I am going to the doctor tomorrow, but am skeptical about dropping a wad on expensive tests that may reveal nothing.
I’ve fainted twice. Once after a softball game during a team photo. I locked my knees while standing and I was out. Great photo of me lurching down and out.
The second time was in high school when we had to watch a health film and they jammed three classes into one room. I was standing and again locked my knees and was out. I slammed face first into the floor.
Fainting Causes
Fainting has many different causes.
Vasovagal syncope: Also known as the “common faint,” this is the most frequent cause of syncope. It results from an abnormal circulatory reflex. The heart pumps more forcefully and the blood vessels relax, but the heart rate does not compensate fast enough to maintain blood flow. People older than 45 years rarely experience a first “common faint.” Causes of vasovagal syncope include the following:
Environmental factors - Most commonly in a hot, crowded setting
Emotional factors - Stress or the sight or threat of injury
Physical factors - Standing too long with locked knees
I witnessed this (out of the corner of my eye). Needless to say it was fucking awesome. I can’t recall the number of times I’ve almost fainted during a parade.
In all seriousness, interesting thread. I occasionally get these things where if I stand up after sitting down for some time, I feel extremely light-headed and almost like I’m going to faint. I assume it has something to do with blood flow / sugar levels / who knows. Wonder if I should get that checked out, haha.

Judging by the head in your avatar, it’s easy to see you’re light-headed.

Wow thanks OG. This is helpful.
A woman at work has this but she faints half a dozen times a year. We all tease her that she’s only doing it for attention, but she has scared the shit out of a few people.
could be a lot of things. Maybe even a petit mal siezure.
My sister who is a triathlete gets fainting spells because she dehydrates very very easily.
She has to like, mainline yucky sports drinks all the time to make sure it doesn’t happen.
