I am getting more and more pissed at the fact that so many people do NOT know how to displat our flag. I have to call stores, resturants, gass stations, etc… almost daily to tell the to turn their flag around!!! lets do a test, how many of you know HOW to display the flag?
I’ll be honest, I don’t know all the rules, but me and a couple of my boys stole our schools’s flag (for their flying it dirty and unlit at night) and left it on the univ. prez’s desk with a note telling him not to do it again… One of my prouder moments, I must say.
OK, I admit that I do not have a clue on how to displat a flag. I’ll even admit that I don’t know what “displat” means. I also have no idea what a gass station or a resturant looks like. I just must be STOOPUD!
There are actually several ways to display (or Displat) the flag. It depends on the location, ceromony, and some other things.

anyway d_end the point is there is something called respect. respect for the symbol of what many men and women have died for. let me give one simple example, when displayed to the public the stars are always in the top left, whether hung vert. or horizontal. the most common mistake I see is when people just rotate the flag and don’t turn it over (when they swich it from one way to another, hope ya’ know what I mean)

I think it’s just a matter of you looking at the flag from the wrong side. ex. if a flag appears backwards to you, say outside of a diner, to the patrons of the diner, those stars are on the top left side. unless you fly a flag upside down, it cannot be the wrong way around. sorry man

In an attempt to be patriotic, it is good to do it properly and respect the symbol of our nation.

· The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.
· The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.
The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary. When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.
Note: Most American Legion Posts regularly conduct a dignified flag burning ceremony, often on Flag Day, June 14th. Contact your local American Legion Hall and inquire about the availability of this service.
Displaying the Flag Outdoors
When the flag is displayed from a staff projecting from a window, balcony, or a building, the union should be at the peak of the staff unless the flag is at half-staff.
When it is displayed from the same flagpole with another flag - of a state, community, society or Scout unit - the flag of the United States must always be at the top except that the church pennant may be flown above the flag during church services for Navy personnel when conducted by a Naval chaplain on a ship at sea.
When the flag is displayed over a street, it should be hung vertically, with the union to the north or east. If the flag is suspended over a sidewalk, the flag’s union should be farthest from the building.
When flown with flags of states, communities, or societies on separate flagpoles that are of the same height and in a straight line, the flag of the United States is always placed in the position of honor - to its own right.
– The other flags may be smaller but none may be larger.
– No other flag ever should be placed above it.
– The flag of the United States is always the first flag raised and the last to be lowered.
When flown with the national banner of other countries, each flag must be displayed from a separate pole of the same height. Each flag should be the same size. They should be raised and lowered simultaneously. The flag of one nation may not be displayed above that of another nation.
Raising and Lowering the Flag
The flag should be raised briskly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. Ordinarily it should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset. It should be illuminated if displayed at night.
The flag of the United States of America is saluted as it is hoisted and lowered. The salute is held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the last note of music, whichever is the longest.
Displaying the Flag Indoors
When on display, the flag is accorded the place of honor, always positioned to its own right. Place it to the right of the speaker or staging area or sanctuary. Other flags should be to the left.
The flag of the United States of America should be at the center and at the highest point of the group when a number of flags of states, localities, or societies are grouped for display.
When one flag is used with the flag of the United States of America and the staffs are crossed, the flag of the United States is placed on its own right with its staff in front of the other flag.
When displaying the flag against a wall, vertically or horizontally, the flag’s union (stars) should be at the top, to the flag’s own right, and to the observer’s left.
Parading and Saluting the Flag
When carried in a procession, the flag should be to the right of the marchers. When other flags are carried, the flag of the United States may be centered in front of the others or carried to their right. When the flag passes in a procession, or when it is hoisted or lowered, all should face the flag and salute.
The Salute
To salute, all persons come to attention. Those in uniform give the appropriate formal salute. Citizens not in uniform salute by placing their right hand over the heart and men with head cover should remove it and hold it to left shoulder, hand over the heart. Members of organizations in formation salute upon command of the person in charge.
The Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem
The pledge of allegiance should be rendered by standing at attention, facing the flag, and saluting.
When the national anthem is played or sung, citizens should stand at attention and salute at the first note and hold the salute through the last note. The salute is directed to the flag, if displayed, otherwise to the music.
The Flag in Mourning
To place the flag at half-staff, hoist it to the peak for an instant and lower it to a position half way between the top and bottom of the staff. The flag is to be raised again to the peak for a moment before it is lowered. On Memorial Day the flag is displayed at half-staff until noon and at full staff from noon to sunset.
The flag is to be flown at half-staff in mourning for designated, principal government leaders and upon presidential or gubernatorial order.
When used to cover a casket, the flag should be placed with the union at the head and over the left shoulder. It should not be lowered into the grave.

avoids, I agree it IS the gesture (I don’t have a prob. with people that just do not know or that made a mistake) BUT too many people react like D_idiot with things like “I’ll do it any way I want” etc… I am NEVER rude or nasty when I tell someone, I’ll just go into a place and say “excuse me but you guys have your flag hung wrong, the correct way is (depending on their error)” sometimes they are like “thanks, I did not know” or “gee I thought it was right” I will even give them a coppy of flag etiquette. but some people do react like “F U I’ll do what I want!!” there IS something called respect, respect for the symbol of what many men and women have died for. If that makes me a psycho then fine (there are alot of OTHER reasons to call me a psycho). It is a simple thing to do that means alot to alot of people, take the time and do it right (out of RESPECT!).
There is nothing crazy about knowing how to display the American flag. The problem is some people are a little ignorant to the issue. Try telling somebody who has had to give up a lot in defense of the flag that it doesn’t matter. Try telling it to somebody who pushed his way through subzero temperatures in North Korea with the thoughts of war still haunting him today. Tell the guy who gave up his everyday luxuries in the US to eliminate a total foreign command in Afghanistan, solely in defense of his nation. The American flag is a great symbol of our nation, and improper display shows little respect for the meaning behind it. Trust me, it matters… nuff said.
WOW- Somebody’s cock is only getting to Half Mast. I must be a total shit head communist fuck because I have dropped my flag more times than I can count. But it still gets put up every morning when I get the paper. But sometimes I put it up in my R, W & B Boxers. Before brushing my teeth no less…How could I? And to make matters worse my girlfriend decorated the X-mas tree with R, W & B. You sound like some one who can’t pray to God unless they are in a church, I feel sorry for you. I started this by asking who knew the correct way to display the flag and your response was “I can fly my Goddamn Flag any fucking way I want to…That is the point” and you feel sorry for me? sad life my man, you have a sad life. I guess there is something wrong with respect.
Some people just aren’t capable of respecting other people no matter the reason. They are so self absorbed that in their mind other people just fade into the background clutter. It’s rude to wear a hat indoors, pick your teeth at the table, and chew gum or food with your mouth open but you see shit like that every day. People that do these things are either ignorant or just plain don’t give a fuck, just like people that will display the flag any way they want. A couple things they don’t get, and most likely never will, are that the flag isn’t their’s it’s all of ours…it’s a symbol of all of us…and by doing it WRONG they are the ones that look like idiots, not everyone else. If you want to hang a flag any way you want make up your own design that stands for you and you alone. Then feel free to wipe your ass with it if you choose. Some symbols you might think of are: a brick, a stump, a rock, or a fence post.
