Im learning an awful lot about squats during this program. I felt very very very very very weak today, no idea why but I did and before every set of squats I started to get genuinly scared I wouldnt be able to do them.

I started with the intention oif doing 75KG but A) I wasnt getting to paraelle abd B) I kept falling forward at the bottom.

The falling forward seems to be an issue with me though I really believe its a mental thing rather than a physical thing. Why? Because even after falling forward in the hole if I grip my shit and really fucking push I can straighten myself and do the squats.

Gievn that I think its just a mental toughness thing and its something im going to have to learn to deal with.

Its funny though, I dont think ive ever in my life felt the same kind of fear as I do when im about to squat. DL’s are scary but theres just something different about squats that really makes you get nervous.

Advice? Well the only thing I can say is I just"Do and dont think", so when I step up to the bar I just throw myself under it without a pause because if I did pause I might lose the nerve.
Well yea, if you fail at a deadlift, you drop a weight, big deal. If you fail at a squat, you’re stuck in the hole and go into “oh shit!” mode. Something that I found makes a small mental difference is to wear a shit ton of layers…at least for your squats. Get a nice thick shirt to rest that bar on, some nice thick shorts, etc. Feels more in control for me. Squatting to a box may be a good thing for you for awhile.

One thing that really fucking irritates me though is when a friend asks about your training/supplements etc. and you maybe divulge a few bits of basic info and they reply with “But you don’t look like you lift.”. This really fucking pisses me off and my response is usually something like “yeah well your mother is ugly as sin but from what I hear she takes a mean dick…”. Good fuck sometimes I hate people! Im putting this up for “T-Nation post of the year, 2011”

I get like this all the time. For some reason mine always happens with military pressing. Generally, I’ve found inhaling and exhaling really loud helps psyche me up. It might make me look like a bit of a tool, but hey it works.
Cool, ill try it during my next squat session.

I might try that, up too now Ive just been going t shirt and shorts. I might try and layer up on squat days because like X says “Failing on leg day can kill”.

Can you front squat to a box? I was box squatting before I started CT’s program but im not sure I can use it for the program. If I can ill be all over it as I LOVE box squats.

Cardio?
Yeah, f**k that.

Same thing with the rack pulls today, started with 190KG but a callus tore and I had to drop the weight too 180 then back too 170 for the last 2 sets. Im going to look after my hands big time this weekend and hopefully by Monday ill be ok.

I now understand what it means to have your form break down from A)fatigue and B)loss of concintration.

During the power cleans on my 4th round of the complexes I was truly reaching breaking point, I tried for the last rep of the set and couldnt get the bar past my waist. I was litrally broken so I held the bar there and just kept repeating too myself “Its this rep, its this one that will make or break today. Just get this one rep, just this one and were done for the day”.

Obviously I wasnt done for the day but this is one thing im finding more and more about weight training and diets. You need to make deals with yourself during the hard moments. “Just one more reps and we can stop, just one more set aand its over, you only have to rest 30 seconds this once then you can take as long as you like”.

This is where I get my mental strength from, making deals with the devil because by the time Ive made the deal and pushed through its time for a new deal. Its what gets me to the next stage.

As for loss of concintration, I was rather annoyed at myself to be honest. Last set of DL’s and last rep, I am beaten inside but I wanted the last rep more than my next breath. I gripped the bar hard and started my pull.

Then someone walks in front of me and I look up. F**king red light, my mind slips to this joker strolling in front of me. I lse the tightness in my back, I lose my will power and my fight.

My back rounds and like a F**king moron I finish the pull, I wasnt injured thank christ but it was a major red flag for me. It showed me just how important it is to keep that focus even when you feel like falling over.

I dont know, it was a important lesson for me and its a mistake I wont be making twice.

I put up with something similar when I first started training as well. To most people, unless your totally huge/jacked up/“on the juice” your don’t even look like you train.

Why exactly are you eating 4 days worth of calories in one day?

God trust me, it’s never happening again.

I was using the carb up day as an excuse to eat as much as I wanted as long as it was clean food.

I’m going to eat at the same level day in day out from now on.

F**k you.

A few thoughts:

On my last set of squats today I only managed 2 reps and was gutted. Its the first time Ive ever properly failed on a excercise because I didnt have the stones to really give it 100%, I got scared after the second rep and gave up. I was disapoint.

I was talking to Modok and have come up with a new approach to my diet. The AD is awesome and is working wonders save for my gorging on the carb up days. Now for most people it wouldnt matter since most people could never eat 1KG of musli in a sitting but im a tad different.

Therefore! The new plan is when Sat arrives I will eat what ever amount of kcals I have been eating weekly(2100) in the form of clean carbs and then in the evening I will have 1 cheat meal that wont be counted. This cheat meal will most likely be a large pizza but it can differ so long as its one meal and no more.

This will A)keep on track during the week and B) Stop me from eating 4 days worth of food every saturday.

On a side note id like to give some stats since starting CT’s complexes(3 weeks ago)

Start:

Weight: 180Lbs
Waist: 35.5 inchs

Now:

Weight: 185Lbs
Waist: 34.5 inchs

Me: Very f**king confused but like hell if im going to comaplin

Why? You are getting leaner while adding a bit of lean mass. Didn’t CT say that’s exactly what this program is designed for? =/

Well its been hammered into me that you cant add mass while getting leaner(gaining mmuscle and losing fat together) so im a tad confused by the results.

I was almost positive from what Ive read it had to be one or the other.

Cardio?

Derp!

The pump I felt in my spinal erctors today after the DL’s was nearly making me throw up it was so prominant. Ill admit, its one of the crazyest things Ive ever felt,a pump in your lower back. It was just like doing hypers only much much much worse lol.

A thought on the rack pulls, atm im doing them with the bar just above the knee as CT says to do it but I cant help but think its such a sort range of motion. Would I be better doing them below the knee or are we into a different move then? Im not sure tbh, what I do know is that rack pulls hammer my back almost as much as the regular DL’s and that makes me happy

Something funny to share actually, I was at a friends house last night. Now I havent seen her in agggggggggggggggggggggeeesssssssss, like I havent seen her since I was basically a sea cow.

So I arrive and its the usual with people I havent seen in ages “OMG David you look great etc”, now being a FFB ill admit I love this shit and I dont care how shallow that makes me lol. Anyway later that night I run into her mom who I havent seen in ages aswell and she does the same thing BUT then she starts asking me for advice sigh

Now my friends mom is easily 100 lbs overweight, very obese and she tells me she knows she needs to lose at least 70 lbs. So I do the usual and ask her what her diet is like expecting the norm but she turns around and says “Oh its mostly green veggies with the occasional cheat day”.

I didnt even know what to say, I didnt want to be an asshole but come on like. Green veggies? Srly? What were they covered in Cosco?

Bah people make my head hurt.

From who? That’s silly. Perhaps what you heard was that you’ll drive yourself nuts trying to do both, but you’re not. You’re focusing on one, and the other is a bonus, since you chose a program that keeps you training at a high intensity with higher weights.
