Oprah's Encounter With Racism

Question…I don’t watch her show at all, but my guess is, she does more than just talk about this over three decades.

It would appear to me that people who barely pay attention anyway were just waiting for something to complain about.

If after three decades, the most to complain about is her taste in purses, then damn, she must be doing great. I mean, seriously…this is the scandal that does her name in?

LOL

To my knowledge, the woman has given back quite a bit. I don’t see anyone else here building schools in Africa.

Not really commenting favorably or not, just a stat I found relevant. Oprah gives 20% on average of her yearly income to charity. One of the highest percentages of any celebrity. Doug Flutie has been widely speculated to be the most generous based on percentage, but a lot of that has to do with his own interest in autism research because his son is autistic.

Really? You came in this thread acting like you were speaking for everyone else. The first response to yoy was maybe I had a point…so what was all of that talk for before?

Dude, seriously most of your posts here are about me.

doesn’t that seem a bit strange?
Dude, seriously, I came into this thread and read all of the posts. And most people had the opinion that Oprah is acting like a spoiled brat. Then you came barging in and just had to argue whatever point wasn’t in the majority like you always do. It’s like you just thrive on arguing with everyone. This thread started out pretty light and fun. You had to turn it into a debate per usual. Just because one guy said you MIGHT have a point doesn’t make you right by any stretch.

Lastly, when you try and claim that most of my posts are about you, it’s pretty sad. You seem to greatly overestimate your importance. You’re just an aging man who has delusions of grandeur and wishes most things were about him. If you paid any attention to my posts as of late, many were in other threads that you hadn’t even participated in. All it is is that I grow really tired of you talking down to me. I don’t put up with it.

So it really makes me question why people would focus on this ONE incident as a judge of her entire character.

People are literally saying they hate the woman. I am betting if a film crew followed most of the posters here 24 hours a day there would be way more to “hate”.

I don’t know if the salesman was a racist or not…and that really isn’t relevant.

I am more interested in the people here acting like they grew up in a third world country because their grandfather slept one night in a basement without a floor.
Professor X wrote:

I am not going to hate on Oprah here because most of us in this country are on antidepressants due to their horrid “upscale” lives in comparison to real third world countries.

talk shit about Oprah AFTER you donate as much as she does to charity.
I have life experience living with no floors at all, I mean it was solid because well it was New Mexico red clay. And holes in the roof? Seriously my 3500 square foot house has about ten holes in the roof.

You know, you feelin’ your heart fall into your feet. Summertime, still ridin’ with the heat. I gotta go to work.

I am not really an Oprah fan honestly, I don’t really agree with her views on most things. With that said, I haven’t actually read where she said that it was racist. From most accounts, this appears to be more of a case of elitism at worst.

One explanation, that came from the stores owner said the clerk (who didn’t know who Oprah was) was trying to sell a bag and didn’t want to give her stick shock over that bag (which was crocodile) and was trying to steer her more towards the ostrich and suede versions of the same bag because she felt the likelihood of a sale with them was higher. I think that seems like a perfectly reasonable explanation honestly. I would think that you wouldn’t pull a $30000+ bag down to be “looked at” unless the person was almost assuredly going to buy it.

20% is very good.

I have been giving 10% since I started working. I have not built a school, but I have paid for 5 children every month for 10 years to go to school in India. These children are not allowed in the classroom, but must sit outside the door and listen, because they were not born into the correct caste. In fact they are not in any caste. 200-400 million people in India are discriminated 100% because of their skin color. No government hand outs, not allowed to be in the same room, and not served pizza by the Pizza Hut guy. I have seen this first hand. I have slept on dirt floors in a hut made out of leaves. I know what it is like.

If you have not seen first hand true poverty please take a mission trip to see what it is like. It will change your heart. When you hold a child that should be brown, but is gray because he has not eaten in 2 weeks. I need to go back to India, and take my children.

I have been wanting to go to Thailand to help with the orphanage and school building effort for the hill tribes. I just never have quite brought myself to pull the trigger but it has been weighing on me ever since a guy I know went himself and told me about it.

Like I said missing the freaking point.

No one here is living like they are in a third world country. Some of you are taking a comment about floors and acting like it is the same as clay or someone’s basement.

It isn’t. I mean living on the ground where your next meal is likely what you kill in your front yard…where going into town takes a 2 days walk.

NOT ONE PERSON HERE WITH INTERNET ACCESS IS LIVING LIKE THAT.

Ge serious.

I even mentioned the country by name and some of you want to pretend you live like those people.

Eh, If I was O I would be pissed if I was disrespected like that as well. I don’t blame her, call me or her whatever name you want.

If I get that type of money, I do something right, very right, damn right someone in that store best be kissing my ass when I walk in.

I’m sure plenty of white women are told the same thing by the sales people, but who knows, maybe they were racist.

I just feel like this kind of mentality is only reinforcing the divide between races and cultures though. Thinking that money gives one the right to act unkindly to others is wrong.

It just seems like you are a walking stereotype that feels compelled to argue for the sake of arguing. You need to foster a personality someday. For the record, it’s not that you have your own opinions, but that you feel like you have the right to try and force others to share those opinions. Most of these argument threads start not because others tried to undermine your beliefs, but the other way around. You can’t seem to be able to handle it when others don’t share your opinion. People aren’t always going to agree with you on here. You may need to just learn to live with that.

I am glad for you…but what I witnessed I have not seen in this country.

Those people walked for days just to see American doctors, most never having been to one in their lives.

Most didn’t have shoes to wear.

No, I seriously doubt any Americans have lived like that without being homeless.

She is a racist (she attacks others without any reason) and she talks agains racists.
She offers us free laughs. She is great.
Remember she lives in the united states who have no clue that America is a continent so her ignorance is shared by about 300 millions.

For many years they all pretend that they voted for a black president wich is totally false.
The republicans messed so much that they lost the election even to a not totally white person.
Obama is not black. So pretending they are passed the racist era is 1 more lie.
They underline the fact that he is not totally white, that is racist.
Oprah lives in the USA, is a product of the USA so your surprise is my surprise.

JP, you do understand that X will never stop, right?

Even if you make relevant arguments and complete sense and what he says is completely unfounded, he will continue to press your buttons, regardless. It can be just you or a goup of 30 people. I’ve witnessed it a number of times over the years.

It gets him off. It has to. So, really, if you think about it, right now you’re jerking him off over the internet. Just thought you’d like to know.

I think Oprah's a good lady, never had any problems with her. Nobody is perfect and for her to be a billionaire probably makes her more volative than most people in that situation. Just naturally.

Now, if she pulled the race card, then I don't respect that, too many people pull the race card in my opinion (not that nothing is about race, because many things are, I just hate when someone acts like literally EVERYTHING is about race).

Aside from that, if they were closed to a private party at the time after hours, then one would have to wonder why the guy tried to sell her anything to begin with. I admittedly didn't read the story, though, just pieced it together from people's posts.
