I’m strongly considering openly carrying my pistol. Now I live in Detroit…not metro Detroit, but actually within the city limits. Theres a big push to get guns off the streets here in Detroit because of all the shootings that happen in the city.
Gang squad cops are stopping people for things like broken taillights and loitering and using that as probable cause to search them for weapons. However, its only certain groups that they are doing this to, and I happen to be in that group. I’m a 23 year old black male, exactly the kind of person Detroit police DOES NOT want carrying a gun. Sure a middle age white man may catch some flak for open carrying, but I know if I do it, they may be ready to send in the SWAT team. I know open carry in Michigan is legal, but what if I am open carrying and some police arrest me and say I was CONCEALED CARRYING and charge me with a CCW violation, which is a 2-5 year felony and/or a $2500 fine?
If 3 or 4 officers say I was concealed carrying when I was clearly open carrying, what should I do and what precautions should I take?
P.S. I didnt mean anything against middle aged white men I was just illustrating a fact, so please, I’m begging you, no one get offended!
I gotta agree with metamorph. IF I was in your position, I would either have to pick either to not carry a handgun or move and carry one. And I know its easier said than done to move but you are put at a risk I guess for carrying one

Perhaps not this extreme, but maybe carry a rifle? If three or four police officers say you were conceal-carrying a shotgun, take it to a trial by jury and have your lawyer ask them to display how that is anatomically possible.
Actually, call up the ACLU in your city and explain your situation. They usually have local offices (with real lawyers!) that are all about how to defend yourself from cops.
Honestly, I think you should just carry the concealed weapon, get arrested and spend the rest of your life in jail. That way you can’t keep polluting the gene pool and these boards.

Don’t mess with the gang squad, they are the wrong people to fuck with. I’ve watched the gang squad take a white, middle aged, lawyer and put the kind of beating on him that I have to pay good money for in the suburbs. His attempts at a lawsuit afterwards went nowhere. If you aren’t going to have video documentation and comprehensive medical insurance, don’t bother.

How aggressive have you been as a gun rights activist?
Do you belong to the NRA? If they’re not aggressive enough for you, how about Gun Owners of America? How about Michigan-specific organizations? All of these groups need money and man power.
Hell, if you are motivated enough, you can go to law school and take up gun rights cases.
Also, why don’t you have a CCW?
I say all this because I don’t think open-carrying given all the specifics you provided is the best idea. There are so many things that could go wrong and you laid some of them out. There are other concerns too. If you run across a very nervous cop, or an enterprising gangbanger, you could find yourself below room temperature. Legal concerns aside, CCW is vastly superior tactically for most solo operators in an urban environment(which is what you would essentially be).
There are many more conservative(and probably more effective) options than what you are considering. In a perfect world, it wouldn’t be that way but reality is a bitch sometimes.
