Hey guys, I’m Ryan, I’m sixteen. Before twelve months ago I hardly ‘worked out’ aside from chin ups now and then. So about a year ago I injured my shoulder and back snowboarding. I then began to do push ups to try to put things back into alignment. A few months later, I challenged a 6’3" friend over two years older than me to a bare-knuckle boxing match – I lost miserably and my shoulder and back were worse than ever. So then I decided to add pull ups. And it has just kinda progressed from there. Please let me know what you think. Thanks.
DAFUQ?
Anybody?
fairly lean I guess? IMO you need to EAT, SLEEP, GROW (muscle obv) unless your happy with where your at right now.
I see a pic of your upper body and a vid of you doing pull-ups and a random bio. What kind of evaluation are you looking for exactly?
I gotta feeling this thread could easily turn into one of those that is read for years to come… I’m excited.
holy shit Justin Beiber made a RMP??!
- stop getting into fights
- get a respectable haircut. high and tight
- increase your calorie intake. keep a log of what you eat to see how many cals you’re eating in a day, then increase this number until you are gaining weight consistently every week. .5-1lb/week is good since you’re a growing boy. meats, vegetables, and healthy fats should account for 80-90% of your calories
- once you can do 100 pushups consecutively and 20 pull-ups consecutively, come back here and ask for advice on picking a beginners weightlifting program
Honestly dude you have a ton of potential. I would kill to have your bone structure. You have very broad shoulders. It seems like just from doing some pull ups and push ups youve built a more aesthetic physique than many on this site.
If you want to get respect on these forums youre going to need to actually lift weights though. Stick to the compound movements(squat, deadlift, bench, pull ups, rows, dips, push ups) and starting moving some heavy weight with good form. You will also need to eat a surplus of calories to build muscle. i.e eat more than you are eating now.
For serious?
Thanks for all the replies. Sorry, I wasn’t very clear, I am lifting some but mainly with 30lb dumbbells right now. I have been benching and doing squats with a friend until a week ago. I’m working on making weights now.
You need a gym membership or money for more equipment. I tried for about a year with pushups a kettlebell and a dumbbell. it just doesn’t compare. Start eating everything in sight. Gain about 40 lbs and then challenge him again. Just dont make the mass monster mistakes in the fight. Stay slow, dont dance. Wait for the opportunity and crush him. =) also assess injury before you lift.
Hey guys, sorry its been so long. I made some weights (barbell, plates, and a squat/ bench rack) a couple months ago (my parents own a manufacturing business) and have been making quite a bit of progress. Oh, and I got a haircut :). I’ll try to get a better pic up soon.
For serious?

Yeah. I’m serious.
I think your doing alright bro. You’re a young guy with the right pieces to be a monster by the time you’re 21-22 if you keep at it. You’ve got a good starting point - good bone and muscle structure and are at a point where your natural testosterone is just starting to peak (wish I had any of that!). Keep at it. Like others said - eat man, eat. A lot. Lift heavier and heavier as you grow and get older / stronger - focus on only compounds to build a big trunk - squat, bench, deads, standing press, dips, etc. The biatches will be all over you soon…
Also - LOL that you Seinex’s advice - high and tight.

Thanks man.
Yeah, my mom made me cut it for my sisters wedding…
You have a nice physique. Work hard, be a positive force around people, and think about your attitude towards strength and competition, you are young and the lessons will come with time. But, challenging people, especially friends to a fight isn’t a good show of strength, maybe you learned that lesson already from the fight… That’s just being macho. And, you probably shouldn’t be picking fights with guys that are so much larger if you want to compete… If fighting competition is your passion, then you should seek out Mixed Martial Arts, or something more specific, like Boxing or Judo.
If you want to lift, then lift! Set goals for yourself, and learn the big barbell movements and mechanics. People are going to tell you to do lots of pullups and pushups, but you should also start to work on learning all the barbell complex movements and focus on form right now rather than weight. That’s probably the best thing you can do for yourself on top of hard work young man.
Stay driven, don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do anything, and if they do, Don’t believe them!
You have a great foundation. If you want to be great though, it’s time to start moving some iron. The best advice for you will be the most basic:
- Buy a gym membership or use the one at your school
- Find a big dude who will help teach you the main barbell lifts (said big dude must have big legs)
- Dead lift, squat deep, bench press, overhead press, chin ups, dips, and barbell curls.
- Eat and sleep a lot
- Do that for a year
