One Bourbon, One Squat, One Beer

Mon:

AM Rec. Bike 45 min. L10

Went to chiro this morning. She said I have a strain. She was concerned I blew a disc, but really doesn’t think so. It’s right between my shoulder blades, mid-thoracic spine.

Have to go back 2 more times this week and absolutely no lifting this week. Usually she’s not so concerned and just says ‘take it easy this week’, so if she says no lifting, it’s no lifting (Well, maybe some biceps and grip work…). I’m also halfway through digging a drainage trench in my yard, about 3’x30’, so I don’t think that helped anything.

I told her I’ve been popping Ibuprofrens like candy and even had a percocet last night. She suggested I try “Bromelain” (sp?) which is a digestive enzyme derived from pineapples and also acts as an anti-inflammatory. I know it’s in the digestive enzymes I take, but I don’t think it’s 500mg worth (have to check that).

I guess this will be a good week to catch up on everyone’s logs since I won’t have much to log myself

Glad to hear that it doesn’t sound to serious. Hopefully it will recover quickly.

Steely, you might want to check out that Circumin 500 stuff. Both Hel and I use it…I don’t know about hel’s experience, but I swear by the stuff.

MJ- I may just do that.

AM: Rec Bike 40 mins, L11 (felt this one today)

Chiro: More adjustment, ice/electric therapy. It’s T6/T7 where the hotspot is. She’s not ruling out a disc injury, although I’m still trying to figure out what the Hell I could have done for that! If it’s not much better by end-of-week, we’re doing X-Rays.

Coincidentally, I have a ‘deep tissue’ appointment today. Should be interesting to see his take on the muscle inflammation. Will report.

I’ve been mostly lurking in here for the past week and I must say that I’m continually amazed at you guys (and gals in P-W) with the level and intensity and progress of lifting. Just awesome.

Thought I’d post an update on the thoracic spine issue. Haven’t even lifted a dumbbell in a week. Doc doesn’t think it’s a disc because it’s recovering faster than she’d expect a disc issue to (we ended up not doing x-rays). She says another week before I do any ‘upper’ work, especially pulling.

She gave to OK to do some leg work, so long as I don’t load the upper spine… definitely no squats. That pretty much excepts weighted walking lunges and heavy leg presses as well.

I’ll probably start off light tomorrow with high-rep leg presses, calves, and extensions.

The electric stim that I get after the adjustment has done wonders for relaxing my traps. They turn it up just to the point where I say it’s uncomfortable and it goes for 10 minutes. Pretty cool, my traps contract every few seconds until they relax. Today one of the leads was on my right teres minor (ie my ‘bad’ shoulder) and it was spasming/contracting. Feels totally relaxed as I type this.

Another week… it’s going to kill me, but I think it will help in the long run. Good news is that I’ve been hitting the bike every day and although I’ve cut back on food a little, I haven’t lost any weight (scale hasn’t moved). I feel ‘small’ and my mind tells me I’m shrinking, but unless I’m replacing muscle with fat at an alarming rate, I’m holding steady…

White water rafting Friday…

Cheers.

SteelyD- Good to have you back. That is good news on the back. You’ll be back at it in no time.

Although, I am not sure that white water rafting qualifies as taking it easy.

You should be able to now

After looking at the pics I see what you mean. I mean, how could paddling like hell down a river filled with small boulders, waiting for the raft to flip and dump you into said river, so that it can sweep you over said boulders, possibly be anything but therapeutic??..lol.

It does look like fun, though. Perhaps therapy for the soul is sufficient.

Well, the flip was entirely unintentional. In fact, we flipped (in “White Washer”) several hundred feet up from the biggest wave in that stretch of the river-- class 5 “Magic Falls”. We got pulled out in time and were able to go through “Magic” without a hitch. We got pulled before we hit “Bone Crusher”, too (named for obvious reasons). I got scraped up a bit, but survived.

Several people who went last year ‘opted out’ after that little spill. The last mile or two of (easy) class 2-3 water and lots of beer are worth the trip year after year.

Hope your back heals up brother. Those were some nice squats.Have fun on the river.

I hate the forced lay offs. After a week I feel somehow skinnier and fatter all at the same time. Good luck to you, you are being smart, which means you will be back at it soon enough.

I’m with Pete I hate forced lay offs. I also hate deloads though I am rapidly approaching needing one…

Get healed up and come back even stronger. I agree, WWR isn’t exactly taking it easy but it’s fun as hell. Last time you went you used a shot from it as your avatar. Think it was the “how did I end up steering this damn boat” shot. Enjoy.

Well said, especially as it leads him to drink just beer, no bourbon, only the iron makes him do both

Thanks dudes. Here’s a preview-- that’s me in the co-guide seat (paddle up shout out fo’ ma’ T-Nation brutha’s). Will post the real pics when we get them, this is just a proof pic.

Survived another one  – Didn’t flip, but we did get pinned on a rock. One guy with a pretty nasty cut/bruised arm, but otherwise just wet and drunk (after the rapids).

Glad to hear you had fun.

Good deal. Glad to hear you had a good time.
Be honest, though. Your paddle is out of the water because every time you paddled it pushed the raft to the right

Honestly, that IS the truth! Me and the guy next to me are really the ones who steer the raft. Our job is to ‘pry’ or ‘paddle’. We shout token commands, but everyone in the raft hardly gets the paddles in the water-- they mostly just clack and bump the paddles in front of them. The people in the back do all the work… We’re exhausted after the trip…
