It’s freeeeeeeeking sweet. I wish I would’ve picked it up a long time ago. I think that the old Metal shirt I was using was just too stiff for a long armed lifter like me. There was a big disparity between my best 1-board and what I could touch to my chest. The SDP is much easier to touch in and just has a much more natural groove.

SDP, sweet! Alot of guys seem to be using and loving those lately.

Thursday 5/24 ME Bench

Today we changed up the usual double boat chain setup and went triple boat chains. The thought is that this will strengthen our lockout for a shirted bench. We like doing these with the floor press, as the floor takes away the speed off the chest, so it’s just a grinder the whole way. After a quick mental calculation, we figured the chains added about 160lbs at lockout.

Floor Press w/ Tripled Boat Chains (55lbs each with about half the chain off the ground at lockout)
chains x5
chains + 95 bar weight x5
chains + 135 bar weight x5
chains + 185 bar weight x3
chains + 225 bar weight x1 (wow this was heavy)
chains + 245 bar weight x1
chains + 255 bar weight x1

Same Setup, close grip

Great day today, everybody hit some big lifts. Here is a video for your viewing pleasure. If you have sensitive ears you might want to turn the sound down. My ass came up off the ground on the last one, but whatever.

Friday 5/25 ME Squat

Today everybody wanted to gear whore it up, so I followed suit (<----- PUN). It was about the hottest day in the year, about 90 degrees outside which made it about 100 inside. Add on several plies of gear and you’re a hot sweat mess. Worth mentioning is that Al Caslow and Mick Manley (both from EliteFTS fame) stopped by the gym today to watch a bunch of sweaty men grunt and help each other put on pants.

Raw Warmups
Box Squats to 1" below parallel box
155 x10
245 x5
335 x3
425 x1

Add Metal Briefs
515 x2
Add Leviathon (straps down)
605 x1 (about 6" high)
655 x1 (about 4" high, and shitty)
655 x1 (about 2" high, and less shitty but still sucked)
Straps up
695 x1 (about 1" high, and it’s coming together)
725 x1 (about 1" high, best rep of the day, complete smoke show and 10lb PR)

I cut it here because I thought I was going to die if I took another set. Well, that and my buddies bachelor party starts in about 40 minutes. Unracking the weight was PAINFUL today, I can tell I’ve been neglecting my ab work. All in all, I’m happy with the day. The weights moved great, and it’s good that I’m hitting PR’s 3 months out from my meet. If I train smart and fix my setup I should be good for some nasty numbers.

Great PR’s man, those boat chains are awesome!

Do you guys have any raw lifters that train with you guys, if so does their training differ from the geared lifters.

[quote]prodiboy wrote:

We have very few raw lifters. That being said, raw lifters follow a similar split. I was raw for almost 2 years before I started using gear. It was very similar to the old West Side routine, 2 upper / 2 lower a week. Two days a week devoted to very heavy lifts, two days a week devoted to speed / assistance.

From what I’ve seen, what differs is the speed days. As a geared lifer, we focus more on assistance lifts instead of “speed” lifts. When I was training raw, we never missed DE work. We would frequently changed bars, bands, chains, etc, etc – but it was always DE/ME for both upper and lower.

Now, we’ll cycle speed work and assistance work. Personally, I always do DE bench because it works for me. However, instead of DE box squats we’ll cycle in good mornings, deadlifts, box squats for reps, etc. Our DE Lower day turns into an assistance day for the most part. We still do speed work every now and then, just not every week.

Raw training is a very important part of our equipped meet training. Our group strives to be strong raw and geared. We usually put our shirts on every 3 weeks, switching to every other week about 8 weeks out of a meet. On ME days, we’ll always “warm up” to a heavy set raw before putting our gear on, and keep track of that too.

Even though we are primarily a “geared” gym, I’ve seem some stupid raw lifts (just of the top of my head) :

  • 680x2 squat for speed work of a parallel box (belt only) [actually saw 2 people do this]
  • 600x1 squat ass to grass free squat (belt only)
  • 325x3 bench from a drug free 165lb lifter
  • 465 raw bench from a drug free 18 year old
  • 640 raw squat from a 220
  • 655 chain suspended good morning belt only (if I didn’t see this with my own eyes I wouldn’t believe it)

Hopefully that answers your question

EDIT:

One more thing that differed was the ME Lower was either a heavy squat, or a heavy pull (never both), then a supplementary exercise, then accessories. When I first started training geared, it was always a heavy squat and a heavy pull on the same day, then accessories. We would vary good mornings, pin pulls and squats on ME lower. Now we almost always squat heavy for ME lower.

dem sum good markers

Good training session today, everything felt easy and fast. Whenever I walked over to the drinking fountain I forced myself to do a set of lat pulldowns (which is right next to the drinking fountain). I probably did 8 sets of pulldowns that I’m not even counting.

I dont think I could train in a sweat box like that I dont even think we’ve make up over 68 degrees yet this year

It kinda sucks but what are you going to do? You never know what meet conditions are going to be like, and little things like temperature can really throw you off your game. The meet I did in December was in a warehouse-style gym. It was in Cleveland, OH which is possibly the coldest place in the universe. Anyways, I don’t think the warehouse got warmer than 50 degrees the whole day. Luckily we were used to it so it didn’t bother us at all.

My training partners both wanted to work in their gear on these, while I stayed raw. I intentionally took these to a super low box to work my hips more. Typically I’d only do sets of 2 with speed work but it my fist rep always sucked on these because of how deep I was going.

ME Bench

Today was another shirt day for those guys getting ready for the meet, and I figured I would work down to a 2 board just to see what would happen.

Bench
Raw Warmups
135 x10
225 x5
275 x3 I knew right here that the weight felt heavy and moved slower than usual. Also I couldn’t keep my elbows tucked. At this set, I realized that a 1RM PR probably wasn’t in the works today and that I should just hit some reps in the shirt
315 x3 Felt like dog shit, even though everybody said they looked fine
Add Shirt
365 x3 (4 board)
405 x3 (3 board)
455 x2 (3 board / 2 board)
475 x2 (3 board / 2 board)
500 x2 (3 board / 2 board)

Raw Close Grip off 4 Board
315 x9
335 x6

Today was just one of those days that I couldn’t pull it together and smash weights. It could be due to the heavy squats on Friday, or the fact that I drank myself stupid all weekend (probably that), but regardless I caught it early and still got a lot of work in the new shirt.

From reading the forums and other peoples’ logs, I think everybody needs to be mindful of what they are capable of that day, and not try to force themselves into weights they probably aren’t going to hit.

Friday 6/1 – ME Squat

I didn’t really have anything in particular I wanted to work on today. I felt tired all day, and I didn’t really feel the need to go too heavy since I will be pulling heavy as shit on Tuesday of next week. I also wanted to avoid using a straight bar because my bicep tendons are inflamed pretty bad at the moment. Reflecting back on last week, I had quite a few problems with my setup and unracking the weight.

So, I figured the best thing I could do was to practice my setup and unrack. I wanted to strain at the top, but lighten the load on the bottom. So by process of logical reasoning we decided to squat with the buffalo bar and add reverse bands to overload the top. This would get us use to heavy weights.

Squat w/ Buffalo Bar
Raw Warmups to below parallel box
150 x10
240 x8
330 x4
420 x2
Add Briefs, remove box
510 x3
Add Reverse Band
600 x3
650 x2
710 x1

I cut it here. The last squat was not a max effort attempt but I accomplished the goal for the day. The bands didn’t do a whole lot at the top, and my unracks and setup were all sweet.

Various shoulder prehab exercises, including front, side raises.

Quick little session today, I recorded some of my DE sets with my phone. If I get a few minutes this week I’ll make a video.

Tuesday 6/5 Heavy PULL

It’s been 3 weeks since my last heavy pull. For the first time in a long time, I was very excited to deadlift. We decided to pull off 2 mats. This is a hard spot for us, because we generally get a lot of speed off the floor (thanks to our suits). This makes the lockout even harder (because of the lack of speed). So generally if you can pull it off a 2 mat, you can pull it off the floor. I decided to work in the squat suit today and pull sumo.

Deadlifts off 2 mats
Raw Warmups
140 x10
230 x5
320 x3
Add Belt
410 x3
[b]Add Suit (Inzer Leviathon)
500 x1
590 x1
660 x0 (weight got out in front)
660 x1
705 x1 (+45lb PR) (video)

What pisses me off about pulling sumo in a suit is the lockout. The motion for me is very disjointed, I start the pull with my hips and about half way I have to throw my head back to lock it out. Secondly, I don’t really have a feel for it yet. I thought for sure my last one was locked out – wasn’t even worried about it. After watching the video, it doesn’t look locked out at all. But yet – one of the guys at the gym (who is a judge) gave me the down signal. I am completely disgusted.

Suit off – conventional raw pulls
500 3 sets of 3

Reverse Hypers
