On My Way to 2000lbs

Yes sir, I am doing the XPC Semi Finals

I’m one of those guys with frail egos that can’t lift raw because I’m afraid of how weak I really am :*(

My projected lifts are:

Squat 735 / 775 / 800+ (the meet is in kilos so whatever the closest conversion is)
Bench 475 / 505 / 520
Deadlift 630 / whatever I need for 2000 / 720ish

Here are my priorities in the order of importance:

  1. Finish the meet (which in itself will probably get me qualified for the Arnold in 2013)
  2. Get a 2,000lb total
  3. Squat 800+
  4. Pull 720 to beat my training partner’s best pull by 5 lbs.

After this my primary goal until the end of the year will be to finally bench 405 raw.

Thanks for the add!

And you’re 220 right? Funny we’d be competing against each other if I was back in Multi Ply to go to the XPC Finals at the Arnold. Almost switched back to.

That’s a pretty kickass total projection man. I must see the videos.

No I am a 6’4" 275er. Should I continue the sport for much longer, there isn’t going to be many meets left in the 275lb class either.

I weigh’ed in (unofficially) tonight at 274 and I am just cranky and hateful. I can’t wait for weigh-ins tomorrow morning so I can actually eat a real meal. I feel flat and depleted and it’s messing with my head.

I guess I’ll start by saying that the meet did not go according to plan, but it never really does.

I weighed in on Friday morning at 272. I trained the majority of the meet cycle at around 278 so once I weighed in I tried to gain that weight back. I think I put it on pretty easily, and I was excited going into Saturday.

Squats
Warmups felt great. Everything was on point. I worked up to 690 with my straps down. I finished this set and walked up to the flight roster to see where I was at. Literally on my way up I heard my name … then “the bar is loaded”. Some how I missed the start of my flight – and I had 60 seconds to start my lift. I had 2 different guys from my gym wrap both my knees simultaneously. I ran out on the platform, forgetting to tighten my belt, and not even tightening my straps (which were pretty much draped over my shoulders). 1 minute after taking my last warmup I was on the platform with my opener weight of 733.

I unracked it awkwardly, sat back hard. It felt like I was about parallel when I heard my handler tell me I had about 2 inches to go. I dipped and came up with a very very tough opener of 733. It was good 2-1. I was in the meet.

I went up to 777 on my 2nd. I unracked this one great, sat back … and waited for an eternity for my up call. I heard my handler yell “one”, and I dipped and my right knee twisted and smashed into the platform and dumped the bar hard into the safety chains. This sucked. Looking at the video I just tried to dip and just got buried.

My right knee was killing me and I decided there was no point in going after my 3rd squat and risking injury. So I passed on my 3rd. In doing this I knowingly passed on my goal total but it was an easy call.

Benches

During warmups, everything in my hands after 185 felt heavy. I knew this was going to suck. I worked up to 455 off 2 boards.

I opened with 474 and it seemed to take forever for me to lock it out. My handler said it was the best rep he’s ever seen me do but I think he was lying. We decided to go to 507 for my 2nd. I thought this was heavy but do-able, especially since bench training has been going great. I ended up missing this twice. So at this point I have 1 squat and 1 bench to my name.

Deadlifts
I eat about 600mg of Ibuprofen so my knee quits aching. I warm up to 500 and decide to drop my opener from 638 to 606. This day has been hellacious so far, and with the number of bomb outs I’m sure if I just stay in the meet I’ll get to the Arnold. That I don’t know how my knee is going to appreciate heavy dead lifts.

606 was a smoke show.

Went up to 660 (300kg) for my 2nd. I got it but it felt heavy.

At this point I just assume go for my first 700+ meet pull, and go to 705 (320kg). To be honest I didn’t think I’d get this but somehow I stood up with it. It felt like the bar stopped moving twice but both times I got it moving again and locked it out. This is a 75lb meet PR.

So despite only getting my openers on squat and bench, I go 3 for 3 on deadlifts and finish with a 22lb meet PR of 1912 – which is hysterical.

This meet was the toughest meet I have ever seen in multi-ply lifting. LOTS of people bombed. The judging was extremely strict, which I’m sure you will see more about on EFS whenever Julia Ladewski and Adam Driggers update their logs.

For my incredible 5 for 8 performance, I was invited to day 2 of the XPC Finals at the 2013 Arnold Classic. I’m pretty excited about this, even with my lackluster performance.

I haven’t yet combined my videos into a single one yet, but here is the 705 pull. I’m pretty sure the head judge threw a red my way for a hitch. I don’t remember hitching but the video makes it look bad.

Good job, man. You worked hard to get here. Do you think you’re going to go up a weight class any time soon?

CS

Good job at the meet even if it didn’t go the way you wanted!! If I were you I woulda cried after the second squat and gone home to whine to my mommy, ha. You’re a tough cookie!

I gotta figure that out. Up to this point I’ve just kind of eaten somewhat healthy and didn’t care to monitor my weight. Ultimately, for me to become really competitive, I’ll have to move up to atleast 308 and probably super heavy. I just don’t know if I care enough about that to risk my health.

Wait till you see the video. It’s hard for me to watch.

I’m sure you’ll be able to find a way. I don’t know how many of the 308’s and SHW’s health statuses are, but if you’re not a total fatass, then I think you should be okay. I could be wrong, but I don’t know anything about the bigger guys.

Since you train at Lexen, which is associated with WSBB, do you think you could call up Louie and see what he thinks? I know StormTheBeach has talked to him about the same kind of thing. Louie said that Storm wouldn’t be nearly as strong as he could be if he stayed at 275. He’s pretty tall at 6’2", as well.

Here is the video of this weekend, sans bench videos which all sucked.

Congrats to you. Way to gut out a big pull at the end of your day.

I mean I could probably call Louie up, but I already know what he’d say. He’d say “get your weight up” and then probably bust my balls for being small. I already realize I should push my weight up to be competitive I just haven’t done so for a variety of reasons. I’m still making pretty steady PRs at this weight and I’d really like to hit 2,000 @ 275.

Thank you sir. I hope you enjoyed my Speilberg-esque video editting techniques.

LOL at the 75lb PR - that is massive!! Great work to come back from the earlier disappointments!

The story of that meet sounded pretty epic. Sucks about your squat and bench, but it was very impressive how you battled it out and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Thank you sir. I credit that pull to some changes we made in our deadlift training. Felt good to actually do in a meet what I’ve done in the gym.

Hey I appreciate it. It was the toughest stage I’ve ever competed on. It was crazy to compete against some of those lifters. I’m just happy I made it through (relatively) unscathed. Hitting a massive deadlift (even after lowering my opener) was just icing on the cake.

I trained yesterday for about 30 minutes before my in-laws came up, it broke down like yay:

DB Incline Press
30 x20
60 x20
75 x25 ← 5 rep PR

Fat Bar Curls
75 x20
75 x20
75 x10

Lat Pulldowns
160 x2 (2 entire reps!!!)

That’s it.

Tuesday, October 30 – RE Deadlift

Instead of taking a “deload” this week I’m just going to use movements that I can underload. I suppose that’s a fancy way of saying that I’m going to stay away from movements that I can go real heavy on. I’ll also likely use a pre-fatigue method to get a lot of volume in before my real heavy sets on ME day which should limit how much weight I can handle. This way I can stay with the group but give my joints a break from heavy ass weight.

I hopped in with the group today that was doing rack pulls for reps. I decided to go double-overhand and beltless. We pulled from pin 3, my PR on this is 700 so I figured I’d do some reps at 405 which is around 60%.

Beltless Double-Overhand Pin 3 Rack Pulls
135 x10
225 x5
315 x5
405 x5
405 x5
405 x5
500 x1
550 x1

The last 2 sets weren’t planned but we were having a little competition and I had to win (and I did).

Beltless SSB Good Mornings
135 x10
185 x10
185 x10

I think these were a big reason I was able to pull big at the meet so I want to try to push this up going into my next training cycle. I didn’t have such a problem with my upper back rounding over.

Reverse Hypers
140 x12
140 x12
140 x12

GHR Abs
bw x20
light band x12
light band x12

October 31 – Halloween ME Bench’ing

Just like yesterday I was looking for a way to underload a little bit. The group was doing raw board presses so I decided to work up to a heavy set of 6 and then evaluate where I was at. I know that my raw 2-board is my weakest point and that my 3-board and my full range bench press (for whatever reason) are both stronger than my 2-board.

Not only is it easier on the shoulders, but it hits my sticking point really well. The rest of the guys in the group did almost a touch-and-go style board press, I really sank mine into the board and paused.

Raw 2 Board w/ 1 second pause
135 x10
185 x6
add 2 board
225 x6
275 x6
300 x6
315 x6
335 x3
355 x1

355 was a grinder. If I were to guess I’d say I could hit 375 or 380 on this on a good day if I were fresh.

Close Grip Incline
135 x10
185 x10
225 x10
225 x6

DB Rows
80 x12
105 x12
105 x12

Elbows Out Extension
45 x10
45 x10
45 x10

Concentration Curls
30 x15
30 x15
30 x15

Front DB Raises
20 x12
20 x12
20 x12

Band Flyes
Light band x20
Light band x20

Shrugs
225 x20
225 x20

Good little training session here.

I am out of town for a work conference in Chicago. In reality, I’ve spent more time occupying various bars than I have actually spent at the conference itself so I should just come clean about that.

I am going to attempt to train tonight at the hotel gym at the Chicago Hilton. This is probably going to be a massive fail but I’ll keep all of my fans posted.

I’ve been training but it’s been boring as shit. My knee is bothering me (the one that I tried to destroy in the meet the other weekend) so I haven’t gone heavy on any lower body movements.

Thursday 11/8 – Bench

I just decided to get some reps in, so I worked up to 315 for a set of 6, then 335 for 2 and called it there. 315x6 ties a PR, but I felt like garbage on this day so I was pretty happy with it. 335 for 2 is a PR I think too.

Friday 11/9 – Squat

Basically I came in to help the other crew prepare for their next meet December 9th. I worked up to 335 for 4 sets of 3 off a parallel box and called it. My knee was bugging me so I didn’t push it.

SSB Good Mornings
135 x10
185 x10
225 x10
225 x10

Sunday 11/11 – DE Bench

185 + doubled minis x3
185 + doubled minis x3
185 + doubled minis x3
185 + doubled minis x3
185 + doubled minis x3
185 + doubled minis x3
185 + doubled minis x3

DB Inline Press

85 x20

Bamboo Bar Skullcrushers
80 x12
80 x12
80 x12
80 x12
80 x12

EZ Bar Curls
85 x10
85 x10
85 x10

11/13 – Heavy Pull

A few of the guys are getting ready for the December 9th RPS meet here in Columbus, so they were pulling their openers. The goal for them was to handle your opener well and figure out 2nd and 3rd attempts from there and practice getting that weight in your hands by reducing ROM with pads. This seemed to work well for us during our last meet cycle (about a month ago) so we kept it in.

Because I’m really far out from a meet, I decided to work on my sumo. Especially since working my sumo pull seems to help my conventional dead lift as well as my squat.

Raw Sumo Pulls
135 x5 (double overhand grip, no belt)
225 x5 (double overhand grip, no belt)
315 x5 (double overhand grip, no belt)
405 x3 (double overhand grip, no belt)
500 x1 (no belt)
550 x1 (no belt)
Add belt & 1 mat
600 x1 PR (I usually just do reps for sumo pulls so I think my best raw sumo pull was 500 or so before this?)
3 mats
620 x0 <— this sucked

Stiff Leg Deadlifts w/ 120 in chains
225 + chains x10 (double overhand, no belt)
315 + chains x10 (double overhand, no belt)
315 + chains x10 (double overhand, no belt)
365 + chains x6 (double overhand, no belt)

You’ll notice I refrained from using a belt and did as much of the workout as I could using a double overhand grip. I can only imagine this will make me strong as shit when I add the belt.

45 Degree Back Extensions
bw x20
green band x10
green band x10

Hanging Abs
120 x20
120 x20
