Alright, I know I need omega-3’s. And I’ve started taking them. I have a natural peanut butter enriched with flax that has about 4 g of some omega-3 in each two tablespoon serving, and I have fish oil capsules with 240 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA from an 850 mg fish oil concentrate.
I’ve read some things around the net about there being a possibility of overdoing it and I can’t seem to find any information so I figured I’d ask T-Nation, I usually wouldn’t waste bandwidth like this. But I’d really like to know how much I should be taking a day. I’m a 160+ lb male and I’m rather tall, if size matters.
aim for a balance but dont stress over it.; try and get close to 1/3 each MUFA, PUFA, and Sats.
A concentration on fish oils with the readily available EPA/DHA is a good idea and I aim for 6-10g a day
your total fat intake depends on diet usually somewhere between .4 and .6g per lb is great so say you go .5g tahts 80g total divide that x 3 and 26.666 call it 27 for each fat.
In the end be sure your getting ALL your good fats. with what you are taking as long as you are getting other quality sources of the other fats you should be MORE than fine and you really have to TRY and get to many Omega 3’s
I do beleive it was LL who touched on that recently.
Berardi had an article on fats and the sources. That might be what Phill is thinking about. I’m sure LL has touched on it as well, so I might be wrong here.
Anyway, you can overdo it, but chances are you won’t, unless almost all of your fats come from fish/flax
I don’t think that there is an accurate conversion of ALA to DHA… so I would ignore the flax oil in your peanut butter. I believe JB wrote 3-5g (total DHA/EPA) of minimum.
