I’m 61 years old. One fact that this website states often is that nobody cares what we used to be able to do. I do every major muscle group once a week. I do two basic movements for 4 sets each. My training is Monday: chest, Tuesday:biceps/ triceps, Wednesday: Back/shoulders Thursday: legs, Friday: core, weak areas. I rotate through barbells, dumbbells and cables/machines to keep things fresh. I do abs and cardio every day. What I do now is because I trained hard in my 20s, 30s and 40s. I don’t expect to be as strong as I was then but I am more consistent. When I was younger, it didn’t bother me to miss a workout. Now, if I miss a day, I am in the gym on Saturday. I battled cancer in 2019 and I sat around feeling sorry for myself but I knew that getting back to the gym would get me back to where I wanted to be. I’m not there yet but I’m approaching 9 months back and I feel better than I have in 20 years.
That is awesome, keep up the good work.
I’m 45. Workouts haven’t gotten harder. Honestly as I age, I’m less afraid of pain and fatigue. So mentally they seem to be easier. Thankfully I don’t have chronic joint/bone issues so maybe I’m just fortunate.
Getting out of bed might be harder!
What I’m experiencing is that my ability to recover is the #1 thing I need to protect. I can get a good workout. That’s straightforward. Getting good recovery is way more challenging.
Sleep, hydration, solitude and time spent onentloverall attitude, patience with seemingly slow progress.
Wow, very impressive. I applaud you, sir!
How much have you used gear over the years? Any health problems?
I have had a number of health issues which when they occur incentivizes my motivation to continue to train. See trike, 3 shoulder surgery’s hip replacement, back and neck fusions 3 knee surgery’s. The stroke has been the most motivating setback. Not going down without a fight. Gear has not been a option due to the criminality associated with it.
Geez, really? I asked about health issues because I just assumed gear has been involved for a long time given how you look. That’s all natural?! Amazing, my friend.
Amen!
I don’t know if 40 qualifies for “old man” but I have cut back to 3 days per week, full body.
I make sure to eat an anti inflammatory diet (along with high protein, so neutral I guess) and am more interested in supplements like superfood and fish oil now than protein powders and creatine. I pay a lot more attention to warm-ups and mobility work with an eye on the future.
I still lift heavy and include light volume sets in the mix and have increased cardio sessions split between hiit and liss.
