Exactly this sort of thing is a substantial part of why health care costs are so high.
We don’t know whether the Rhodes Scholar got his ambalamps or not, but certainly he wanted one called.
Did he do this out of any plan to pay for it himself?
Rather obviously he could have gotten to a source of medical help on his own power. If the cost would have been coming out of his own pocket, he’d never have wanted da ambalamps.
Instead (if he actually got it) OTHERS had to pay a very large amount for this.
And where would da ambalamps have taken him?
The ER, where cost of treatment would be many times that of an ordinary urgent care clinic. Would he have paid himself? Unlikely, as if his own money were at stake, the urgent care clinic might have cost say $80 while the ER would likely be over $500.
In total between da ambalamps and the ER, despite the fact that this young man could have gotten himself to an appropriate place for treatment and almost undoubtedly could have afforded that treatment, because he wants da ambalamps, OTHER PEOPLE are forced to pay probably over $2000 total.
In other words, somebody somewhere saw perhaps an entire month of their pay go for this winner who wanted an ambalamps – at other people’s expense, of course – for his bloody nose and lip.
Playing Devil’s Advocate Bill: technically it wasn’t the guys fault he was bleeding his own blood (someone else made him bleed) … no body makes him bleed his own blood, NOBODY!
But seriously, Do you really think that that young man understands the intricacies of the modern day health care system and how fivolous treatment adds to the problem of higher costs? I mean he didn’t even understand not to mess with an old dude wearing a “I am a motherfucker” t-shirt.
And another thing, he views himself as the victim of all of this even tracking down the old man down the road to antagonize him some more, even talking shit to the old man as he got off the bus while he was bleeding from his nose and lips. He felt that he was entitled to an ambalance regardless of who pays for it. Shit in his mind that shit’s free!!

Every day every ER sees costs of at least tens of thousands of dollars from the same sort of thing: people who have no intention of paying and who do not need ER services, going there for treatment.
It’s not “free”: other people pay the burden. And it’s huge.
Bullshit ambulance pickups also are very expensive for OTHER PEOPLE.
But all this has become so ordinary today that it doesn’t even draw comment, generally.
I agree in the expectation that this guy felt he was “entitled” to the ambulance and ER treatment. Simply because that is such a common expectation these days, and because he wanted an ambalamps called.

I dunno, I cannot shake the feeling that maybe EBM started all of this with a racist remark. I’ve been reading some stuff about him being mentally unstable. Then again, he did move to the front of the bus to avoid the conflict. So I dunno.
