Old Guy Strength

sounds awful…I have been contemplating sumo lifting, not anymore lol

Thanks all. I don’t think anything is broke. I can mostly move my toes around. It still hurts. I had a little blood all weekend, but I think that is done too.

Snap, that is a good idea. I’ve nicked my feet before, but never slammed the whole load down on my foot.

3/3/3 Bench:
135 x 10, 185 x 5, 225 x 3, 260 x 3, 300 x 3, 335 x 3, 355 x 1

Bench With Band:
320 x 1
310 x 1
280 x 1

Hammer Strength Incline Press:
45 x 12
95 x 12
130 x 12

Svend Press:
3 sets x 50 reps x 3 plates

The good news is bench does not hurt my feet. 355 was easy. I thought that was pretty good after a set of 335 x 3. I’m going to start some meet prep stuff this weekend. At first I was not going to do any, and just show up for the contest. Everyone else is getting ready for one, so I might do so as well. I plan on attempting deads Saturday.

9/23/14

5/5/5 Squats:
135 x 10, 225 x 5, 275 x 3, 315 x 1, 335 x 5, 370 x 5, 425 x 9

Front Squats:
245 x 5
275 x 5
295 x 5
305 x 5

Leg Extensions:
2 sets x 12 reps x 190
2 sets x 12 reps x 210

Squats on the bad foot were probably not the best idea I’ve ever had. I got through it with only minor discomfort. The toes are still a little black and I can move them a little more. I don’t think they can really do anything for broken toes, so I might as well suffer through it.

Wow. 505 on toes. That sounds like what they did to Porter in Payback. I hope they heal quickly.

Nice work with the 425 x 9 for squats on even though you have the black toes.

That is great work. Wow.

Thanks fellas. It’s almost 90% healed up.

9/27/14

Deadlift:
135 x 10, 185 x 5, 225 x 3, 275 x 1, 315 x 1, 450 x 2, 485 x 1, 515 x 1, 535 x 1, 405 x 10

BB Hold:
425 x 12 seconds

Seated Leg Curls:
2 sets x 5 reps x 230

As I said above my right foot is feeling much better. So what do I do on my first rep of 450? I drop the load on my left little toe. It was just a glancing blow, but it got my attention.

535 was not a full rep. I cleared the floor by about six inches. It may have been set up or the previous sets. 405 x 10 was a killer. I had to step away after rep #8 to catch a couple deep breaths.

That’s a heap of volume and tonnage on your deads. Probably kill a lesser man.

Thanks GV.

Bench:
135 x 10
185 x 5
225 x 3
275 x 1
315 x 3
355 x 2
385 x 2
405 x 2
455 x 1

Today was the first meet prep bench day. I drag my son out of bed to assist with spotting and gear. 315 - 455 was done with my shirt. I washed after the last meet so it was a little tight. I was four inches from touching on each set except 455.

455 was a just go for it moment. I was able to touch and move the bar back up with just a little struggle. It is also a PR. My previous best in the gym was 445. As I work on form, I’ll be pleased with 400-425 for the meet.

I had to cut things short for family work today.

Not bad for getting off work at 0200 and in the gym by 0900. I’m about seven weeks out and feeling good (other than my bruised feet). I’ve decided not to cut weight and to go up a weight class. I only want to be as strong as I can.

Great work in here. 7 weeks to kill it.

What weight class will you be in? I’ve decided to do a meet on November 15th if I can schedule it around family and work schedules. I will be in the 220 lbs class at the Raw United Invitational. Looks like you’re giving your shoulders a good working.

Thanks fellas. GV, normally I’m at 242. I currently weight 247 (yeah, I’m fat). Anyway, I’ll be in the 275 class. I’m pretty sure I’ll be the smallest guy at 275, or the only guy. I did the same thing for the meet in July. WABDL has a 259 weight class. I did not lose any weight and was 245 for weigh in. I normally come in at 236 - 238. My meet is also November 15th for the USPA.

10/2/14

3/3/3 Squats:
135 x 10, 225 x 5, 275 x 3, 315 x 1, 350 x 3, 400 x 3, 445 x 8

Paused Squats:
425 x 1
405 x 1
395 x 1
385 x 1

Leg Extensions:
4 sets x 205 x 10 reps

I was kind of tired this morning, but it has to be done. I got a little pissed when “Crossfit Guy” made an appearance. He had to do all this stuff about six feet from my rack. He got the hint with my repeated dirty looks, but I’ll give him credit. He continued jumping around and doing his thing.

I have two conferences coming up in the next week. One starts Friday and the other Wednesday. My out of town travel is another reason I decided not cut down. I just thought I would not work out.

As another 240lber I am with you…

fuck that crossfit guy!

Now that’s funny Matty. You just made me spit up my Diet Pepsi just a little.

Crossfitters think they invented fitness and weightlifting but I say crossfitters be gone. Sometimes wider is better, ha.

10/05/14

Bench:
135 x 10, 185 x 5, 225 x 3, 275 x 1, 315 x 3, 355 x 3, 385 x 2, 405 x 1, 425 x 1

High Cable Crossover:
4 sets x 12 reps x 50

Svend Press:
4 sets x 50 reps x 3 plates

Not bad after a weekend out of town drinking beer and eating bad food. I considered throwing 455 back on the bench, but my mind told me to leave one in the tank.

10/06/14

Deadlift:
135 x 10, 185 x 5, 225 x 3, 275 x 1, 455 x 1, 495 x 1, 520 x 0, 520 x 0, 500 x 0, 475 x 1

BB Hold:
425 x 13 seconds

Laying Leg Curls:
2 sets x 10 reps x 95
2 sets x 10 reps x 115

I can’t recall a worse day pulling than today. I’m not sure if it was my weekend of bad food and alcohol, no preworkout, or just one of those days. I knew I was in trouble when 455 felt like a ton. My plan for today was to go from 520 to 540. I couldn’t even get 520. I then thought I could save the day with a double at 500. By that time I could not even pull 500. 475 at the end was even a struggle.

All I can do is rest up and nail it next time.

Have to say that deads are tricky. So many think you just go pick it up and it’s simple and easy like that but we know deads can be and often are the most demanding of lifts.

It’s just frustrating.

10/7/14

3/3/3 Overhead Press:
45 x 10, 65 x 10, 95 x 5, 125 x 3, 140 x 3, 160 x 12

4 sets x 10 reps x 55

Side Raises:
4 sets x 10 reps x 35

Pounstone Curls:
62
50

DB Curls:
4 sets x 10 reps x 40

Rope Curls:
4 sets x 15 reps x 50

I’m heading out of town tonight for yet another conference. I’ll keep my eye on the prize and try to get in early. Avoiding terrible conference food is a little more difficult, but I’ll give it a swing.
