Ogres SEC Power Ranking

Every conference has their run at the top. College football, like everything else, is cyclical.

The ACC had its time with Miami and FSU.
The Big12 had its time wth OU and Texas.
The Big10 had its time with Michigan and Ohio State.
The Pac10/12 had its time with USC.

Right now it’s the SEC who’s on top.

Why does the SEC have so many ranked teams?

  1. They have the more teams than any other contract.
  2. A huge factor in the rankings is sports writers. Who has the SEC football contract? ESPN. Why wouldn’t they play favorites in the rankings to slot top 10 and top 15 matchups on their networks every weekend?

The SEC has a few really good teams every year but so do the other conferences. The SEC isn’t blowing out everyone in their bowl games when matched up against the top dogs in other conferences. The teams at the top are pretty close to even.

I still think it’s funny how people suck the perverbial SEC dong when it’s becoming more and more obvious that they are not head and shoulders above every other conference.

Just look at what A&M and Mizz are doing. They were middle of the road at best teams in their respective conferences and are giving it to SEC teams on a weekly basis.

SEC, as a whole, is WAY overhyped because of ESPN and their contract to televise SEC games.

Alabama is awesome, LSU is awesome, the SEC is average.[/quote]

At best? Last five seasons in the big 12 MU had 3 double digit win seasons and won their division three times.

Average? The SEC is 10x the conference the big 10 is and 100x the conference the big 12 is.
The sec went 6-3 in bowl games last season. They simply have more teams that are good then other conference, and the top end is unmatched by other conferences.

The bottom of the sec, are not good, just like every conference.

Hush you tried to tell us about Mizzou. With a healthy Franklin they looked like a much different team than last year. Granted that’s all gone now and the season that is has turned into the season that was more than likely.

This is the weakest year in a long time for the SEC. The defenses have not replenished this year like they usually do. They are talented, but young and they are playing like it. When you have a conference that sends 13 defensive players to the NFL in the first two rounds, and schools like Georgia losing 8 defensive starters, 7 of them NFL caliber (LSU and Bama were nearly in this same boat) of course they are going to be weaker. Texas A&M has played 17 true freshmen overall. Georgia and Tennessee have each used 14. Alabama and LSU have played 13 apiece. Ole Miss has one of the more talented freshman classes in the country and they are playing like talented freshman, great at times and leaving you scratching your head at others.

I have acknowledged that the Pac-12 has drastically closed the gap and might have a claim for top dog this year, but year in and year out there has been no comparison. Oregon, the top dog in that conference has played the top dogs in the SEC twice in recent history, LSU beating them 40-27 in 2011 to open the 11-12 season and Auburn in the 10-11 championship game 22-19. There are the games with Tennessee but they don’t exactly count as top dogs.

College football fans are the most irrational sports fans out there and it is almost impossible to speak logically and without extreme emotional bias with them. It’s like having a discussion about almost anything with a woman who’s time of the month it is.

The “homer” mentality is unbelievably strong and the fans in the SEC are unmatched in this category. Boston fans are a close second though.

Sure there is bias. However, there is also logic in this thread as well. Statistics back up the fact that the SEC is the strongest. No one is denying that they have come back to the pack with pac12 right there and the acc making a move.

All I have to say for the west coast is Oregon better not lose to Stanford or Utah will have screwed them all out of their best title shot to date.

This is the Pac 12’s year if they can take it. I thought the Stanford/Oregon game would be a play in game but that got screwed up. I have a bad feeling Bama will lose but I honestly don’t know to who. If they do I just really hope it isn’t OSU in the national title game. FSU/Clemson I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing though.

Couldn’t help but notice we have 8 teams ranked in the AP this week. First time that has ever happened. Ever.

Alabama is still the best team in the country, but they have had some problems early in games that will cost them if they are repeated against someone like LSU. That Steel Cage Death Match game will decide the West.

Given all of Georgia’s injuries, their close game against Tennessee, which they should have lost, and the game against Missouri that they did lose, they are probably out of it in the East. South Carolina vs Missouri will probably decide the East. I think Missouri has a chance against Florida if they can turn the game into a track meet because Florida cant score points. Franklin being gone for the year may have done them in though.

Everybody else is about equal as it turns out. A&M can score some points, but they cant play defense for shit and Auburn may beat them this week.

Auburn is rebuilding and has won some games they would have lost last year. However, they are not back to an elite level yet and will not be competitive with the big boys for a couple more years. Tennessee, Arkansas, also rebuilding and a couple of years away.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State both suck. I am convinced that the State of Mississippi has some sort of voodoo hex on it that prevents college football success. Ole Miss couldn’t even win when they had Eli Manning. And Vandy & Kentucky are waiting on basketball season as usual.

With all of that out of the way, how pissed off are all of you SEC haters by the fact that one of our ADs is the chairman of the playoff selection committee?

I think with Franklin out Missouri is back to the Missouri we knew last year. Maybe not as they still have huge receivers in a secondary depleted league.

Ole Miss is that almost but not quite school that churns out a decent year occasionally but cant seem to get over the hump. I think they are moving in the right direction though with the young talent if they can continue to build although the loss to Auburn after the no show at Bama and not pulling the upset on A&M when it was in their hands doesn’t look good for recruiting. Auburn is no where near as good as their record indicates. They should have lost to Mississippi State, who really sucks, and barely beat an Ole Miss team that looked asleep the whole game.

You are correct about AU. The thing I like about them is that last years team would be 2-4 or 1-5 right now instead of 5-1. They are on their way back, just not quite there yet. Ole Miss will be in the mix over the next couple of years with the class they just brought in. Look at how true many Freshmen are contributing to that team right now. And the willingness to put true freshmen on the field attracts other recruits. Kids don’t want to wait 2 years to see the field anymore.

5 ranked SEC teams lost today.

First time 5 ranked teams from the same conference all lost on the same day in more that 20 years.

LOLZ

SEC shit the bed for sure but 2 of those 5 were guaranteed a ranked SEC team would lose. Other than that pretty shitty day for the big dogs in the SEC.

I can’t wait for the media response, this is going to be a fun week.

The SEC will go from 8 ranked teams to 11.

How about Missouri now? The world did not fall apart with Franklin gone. Mauk was not perfect, but looked great for a red shirt freshman with the jitters. MIZZOU’s defense also shut down the gators. I know it was cold and we were at home, but that was an historic win.

Well Tennessee won ya bastards!

Right on cue, and of course it’s from Schlabach: http://espn.go.com/ncf/notebook/_/page/onthemark-131021/sec-biggest-threat-own-bcs-title-hopes

Tennessee got a vote in the Harris Pole. Where did that come from.
