The problem with soccer:

Quote from article in case it don’t link:

And that is the problem. That is a SISSY sport. I don’t want to see people play-acting they are hurt or throwing insults. Throw punches, not sissy pansy insults and nipple pinching. It is pathetic.

Watching the game we all see the players pretending to be hurt. But we don’t hear all the crap going on.

This is why soccer has never been big in Australia because we have all grown up calling it the sissy sport, and played rugby or Aussie rules instead (or union). Soccer was always for the little guys, who were weak.

Which is a shame because there is a lot of skill and tension in a game.

I want to see this:

 • no more playacting bullshit
 • two referees and a video referee to override the (possibly bribed) decisions
 • removal of suspect referees DURING a game when controversial decisions are made
 • no F#$%ing penalty shootouts, unless they are at the start of the game, to win the coin toss (instead of a coin) - that would be a great warmup for the fans
 • extra time until they drop dead exhausted
 • TWO BALLS on the field at once, one is worth more points than the other, that’d be great. Stuff it, THREE BALLS! Now that would be a match
 • it should be a bit more like dodgeball, too

The way it is now is just plain pansy ass sissy slapfest.

Seriously? You might have a pretty promising career in journalism, then. Here is one of the articles I was talking about:
Amsterdam Animal wrote:
But when a leader of a team abondons and fucks his team over like he did, that kinda behavior does not spell out MVP for me. As much as I did not care for the Italian style of soccer, they must have had someone just as deserving on their side that did not lose his head (no pun intended).
100% agreed!

Way off topic and forgive my ignorance, but this is the third or fourth post that refered to different rules and leagues in Australia. Anyone willing to give me the Cliff’s Notes explination?

Here’s an alternate form of OT for the WC. Play the 2 15 minute OTs as currently played. If it is still tied, go to sudden death (Golden Goal for the rest of the world) OT period and let all of the players on the field, subs and all. No penalty kick nonsense, just a free-for-all shooting fest.

A stupid question: is it against current FIFA rules for 10 guys to lock arms and surround the keeper as he dribbles downfield, then suddenly split apart while he fires in a shot?

Questo e anche vero, pero se non pigliamo in giro i francesi adesso, quando lo famo?

Wow, you must live in a very polite place because trash talking is prevalent in every sport at every level in the US, from little kids to professionals.

"But how common are the wind-up tactics deployed by Materazzi which sparked such a devastating reaction from Zidane?

According to former England and AC Milan striker Mark Hateley, they are seen as a fundamental and legitimate way of gaining an advantage.

“In Italy, it’s part and parcel of the game and a basic way of trying to get one over your opposite number,” Hateley told BBC Sport.

"That sort of things goes on all the time. It’s non-stop with the defenders, especially. They pinch you, try to annoy you by telling you you are playing really badly. I’ve even known spitting.

zidane is a moron…there is NOTHING that could possibly have been said that should have made him react like that. If he had two brains cells left from headign the ball since he was 3 years old he would have funnelled his rage, slotted home the winning PK then taken his winners medal and slapped the shit out of Materazzi with it for whatever he supposedly said…and you know what? FIFA wouldnt have been able to do a damn thing about it because he is retired so his suspension wouldnt have mattered at all and he would go out with a medal and some honor restored instead he goes out as a moronic loser.

also, it does say something about soccer players that someone gets head butted like that and the rest of the persons team stand around in shock rather than a brawl happening…name one other sport where players would not have immediately tried to kill Zidane…it just goes to show what pussies most soccer players are (outside of cannavaro, Gattuso and a few other exceptions)

You have somewhat of a point. But if I retaliate towards your ass in basketball, I get ejected and my coach simply puts in another player. If I did the same on the soccer field, I get ejected and the team plays on with a man less.

According to a renowned lip-reader in the office, Materazzi said the following to Zidane:
“Zizou, why don’t you come play for Inter?”
Clearly, Zidane did what he had to do.

whooaaah incredible!
and why not adding some spice like:

 • hungry dogs and tigers near opponents area
 • spiked balls for the defenders
 • a big sword and chains for the players and a bow for coach…

uhhh better idea… we can flood the field and put in coccodrile !!

Well, if anyone wanted ammo against Muslims, Zidane is a non-stop source of heavy artillery:

“I tell myself that if things happened this way, it’s because somewhere up there it was decided that way,” he told TF1 television. “And I don’t regret anything that happened, I accept it.”

Yeah, that’s it. Brilliant strategy: try to look as much as you can as a crazed muslim fundamentalist to win the public’s favor.

Yap. That will work.

That sounds nothing like a “crazed muslim fundamentalist” whatsoever. It merely sounds like someone with a strong belief in fate.

And why would anyone want ammo against Muslims unless they were inherently racist??

Exactly. I’ve no idea where the “Muslim” reference came from. It sounds like something that gets said by athletes in all sports. Thanking God when they win, etc…

Lotsa people on this thread talking out of their ass.

Soccer is a minority sport in Australia when it gets to the pro level (although it’s the biggest junior sport) compared to the two rugby codes and Australian Rules football, which are of course vastly different to soccer in how physical the game is. Australians are brought up on these games and one of the major turn-offs when it comes to soccer has been the diving and “acting” to get a penalty. After you get used to seeing two rugby players crunch each other in tackles and then bounce back up straight away to keep playing it’s no wonder soccer is called the “sissy sport” in Oz.

Soccer has just received a huge boost with Australia making the final 16 of the WC, but the fact that Italy won a penalty by diving to beat us confirmed a lot of Aussies’ suspicions about the game. I read somewhere that half of the goodwill built up by the WC was lost in the moment Grosso dived. This is why you have seen this mentioned a few times on this thread.

Hope this explained it for you.
Amsterdam Animal wrote:

As far as Zizou getting the golden ball. I see where you are coming from but I cant help but think that the sentimental retirement plans that were hyped up during the entire wc played a big part in the minds of the voters.

Yes, he had a big part in taking France this far which makes his action even more moronic regardless of whether we agree or understand why he did it. I am sure the French players were not happy to see their leader leave the game at such a crucial point. Would it have made a difference during the PK shootout? I doubt it but we will never know.

But when a leader of a team abondons and fucks his team over like he did, that kinda behavior does not spell out MVP for me. As much as I did not care for the Italian style of soccer, they must have had someone just as deserving on their side that did not lose his head (no pun intended).

Anyone has any thoughts on Zizou still winning the golden ball? Should his red card display prevented him from getting the MVP recognition.

I’m split on that. On one hand, it is pretty stupid to give him that recognition the day after he gets expelled in that shameful display, but, on the other, he had a huge part in getting France to the final and it might serve as much needed damage control. It might also backfire… Only time will tell.

Amsterdam Animal wrote:
Hspder - this is your queue to start talking about the political ramifications of this in France society and its impact on children and teenagers in the south eastern Europeans slums.

That’s almost a straight quote for a couple of newspaper articles I read today, which means you have read them too, so I’ll let you post the links instead if you want to… They summarize it pretty well. If somebody wants to discuss that in greater depth, they can always open up a thread in the appropriate forum…
Ironically, the MVP vote happened at half time according to Sky Sports, before he was sent off. Obviously it backfired.

What world do you live in? Your statement makes it sound like there is little racial tension in Europe with regards to Muslims…
