Official World Cup 2006 Thread

Would not matter what you looked like or how good of a fighter you would be.

But this is killing a pretty good thread and I am partially to blame for that.

Bigger incentive? Ok, I will pay for your ticket. Feel free to take this off line if you want and lets see if you are willing to put some actions behind your big words.

Political fanatic? That’s a new one… Hadn’t heard that before. Care to explain what that might be?

Politics is essentially MY JOB, and I just happen to like my job.

Is soccer your job too?

So I think you are a fucking idiot and should stick to topics you think you know something about.

I AM sticking to topics I think I know something about.

Of course, what you REALLY meant was that I should stick to topics YOU think I know something about, but you can’t blame for not really trusting your judgment on that one…

Holland lost b/c they scored fewer goals than Portugal, period.

I’m glad we can at least agree on that.

Amsterdam Animal wrote:
You are pretty tough on-line knowing full well I would fucking crush your punk ass if you said that to my face.

No I don’t. You certainly have absolutely no idea how I look like, or how skilled of a fighter I am. You have no idea of what environment I grew up in. Conversely, I also cannot be absolutely sure if that’s you in your avatar and I certainly do not know how skilled of a fighter you are either – although, as I said before, if you truly had any real experience, you’d know better than posting idle threats of violence over the Internet.

Amsterdam Animal wrote:
So, I will tell you what, rather than me going to Portugal, I will PM you my address and pay for half the price of your ticket. Let’s discuss in person.

Why should I be wasting my time with you any more than strictly necessary, especially since you were the one throwing the first punch?

You’ll have to provide with some bigger incentive than that.

Woah boys… I thought we were all united in reserving our hatred for those that post in thread about how much they hate the sport…

Chill Winston(s)…

…yeah but they more than make up for it with their super-tight buns. And did you see the Italian captain last night?? God dammit he’s soooo cute!

(in case sarcasm aint your thing I’m trying to illustrate that your comment is roughly of the standard I’d expect from a teenage girl).

True that. The “its just a game” comment started it, haha.

That was my first thought yesterday too - it would have to be something fairly bad to provoke such an instant reaction, and while I’m certainly not tarring all Italians with the same brush, attitudes like that do seem fairly prevelant in their national league.

If that is the case I think the offender should have his medal taken off him.

Perhaps he said “hey, how come all you French lads look like African-Americans?”

Thank you for the compliment. That means I’m starting to mature. You see, my comments usually have the insight of a teenage boy, like the following:

Fuck you, you spaghetti-armed poofter. Isn’t Juninho Portuguese for “small unit”?

I have to disagree. Zidane didn’t OWN anyone last night,

While Zidane raped Brazil’s midfield, he was nowhere near as effective vs Italy.

Totti was a non-factor, as he has been lately.

What do you guys think about taking the next WC away from South Africa and doing it somewhere else because they are way behind schedule.
Rumors say it might go to the US or maybe Germany again.
Germany again would be awesome, but that would be a bit unfair.
The US might get it because they seem to be able to make it happen in just for years.
I think this would be the worst for football. The last WC in the US was a joke compared to this one. No enthusiasm, half empty stadiums…

One of the British dailies early this morning said that Materazzi
called him a terrosrist,

We’ll find out soon I think

Zidane is Inzzane to let a comment, no matter what, throw him off like that.

Whoever said the guy made a meal of the headbutt though is having a laugh. Unlike most girly footballer headbutts there was real power put into that one, and taking one of those to the chest is fucking painful. IN fact we used to train that exact move in thai boxing whenever the coach wanted to do some self-defence type stuff as a change. We’d hold the pads at chest height and then butt away - even through the pads it would knock the wind out of you and leave you with fairly sore ribs.

Would like to know what he said to get Zidane so riled though.

I’d take a guess he said something about zidanes algerian heritage. If so, he should have been carded too.

Wow, had not heard that. Germany would not be fair IMO. US would be awesome. I know Holland and Belgium combined were trying to get it. This has worked out well in the past  Either way, I would spent some money going to see that.

I think the stadiums would be fuller this time around.

What game were you watching?

Zidane was efficiently running the French attack all night long, running the midfield and generally had France in the Italian side of the pitch for basically the entirety of the second half. Del Piero, Iaquinta, De Rossi, could do nothing on the attack. Italy reverted to catenaccio stonewalling and held on for dear life.

Gattusso whose job it was to stop Zidane did nothing of the sort. Zidane, Makelele, Viera and Thuram completely and utterly neutralized the Italian attack.

The Italians only real offense all night was on the corners and set plays. Their two only scoring chances (other than the offside in the 62’ when DeRossi came in for Totti which also came off a free kick) were off the corners.

If the Italians were feasting off anyone last night it was the French left back Abidal. That guy just looked way, way in over his head.

Note that Abidal was uncapped until Domenech took over. For some inexplicable reason Domenech had a hard on for that guy (probably because he’s really fast like the old Roberto Carlos) but damn if he’s got the tactical instincts of a lump of clay.

Again what game were you watching? Credit your stud-hoss goalie Gigi Buffon, Cannavaro and the Italian back line for coming up with Titanic games. The French were eating you guys up in the midfield and upfront.

Like I have said, I don’t think if Zidane had made the PK round it would have made much of a difference. Buffon is the better goalie and that would have made itself clear in the PK round.

On this, we can definitely agree. I don’t believe I heard his name (or Gattuso’s for that matter) called once - other than to announce his substitution.

For the record: It didn’t matter to me who won or lost - I was just amped to see two world heavyweights go at it. For the most part, it didn’t disappoint.

Good one.

Just in case somebody takes you seriously, it’s not – it’s actually a relatively popular name in Brazil, that a few famous Brazilian soccer players happened to have – that, as most names, doesn’t really mean anything.

But you do get props for catching that it is a Portuguese word, and even more props for knowing that it is a diminutive (-inho is, in fact the diminutive suffix in Portuguese)… Considering how very few people in the US would catch that, I have to say I am VERY impressed.

So I’m wondering: where did you learn that? Seriously.

[quote]supermick wrote:

Yes, apparently that’s what his teammates say too.

That does not excuse his behavior – on the contrary. Making the guy’s point in front of billions of people watching is just about the dumbest thing he could have done.

I’m not saying he wasn’t right to be pissed off, I’m just saying he should have waited until AFTER the game, when the cameras were off…

As Italians (ironically) say, “Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold”.

If I’m not mistaken that’s actually a French aphroism. La Rochefoucauld, if I’m not mistaken.

Now, that’s ironic.

Hot news, everyone!

Globo TV claims Materazzi insulted Zidane through calling his sister a whore multiple times.
They used a lipreader for that trick. If it’s true, I can somewhat sympathize with Zizou.

As surprising as it may seem, I am rather worldly for a teenage girl.

But seriously, I will attribute my knowledge of the greater world from working for a European bank for the past 9 years. It affords me the opportunity to travel a fair amount and meet a lot of different kinds of people. My coworkers are rather internationally flavored as well (Krauts, Frogs, Guineas, Limeys, Chinks, Dotheads, Micks, Jews, Arabs, Carribeaners, Brazilians, Persians, Scots, etc - I fall in there somewhere). The office is a great melting pot and its fun to be a part of.

That is pretty interesting! Thank you for sharing that. I can only imagine the conversations there today, with the “events” of the final. I’m pretty sure this whole Zidane thing will not die off anytime soon amongst Europeans.
