Official World Cup 2006 Thread

Yeah and FIFA somehow mind controlled Frings and made him hit the Argentinian player, give it a rest.

Somehow they managed to score? Dude, they hit the damn post and the cross bar 2 minutes into extra time.

They lost and I am sorry to say…I am glad they did.

I must admit that during this world cup I have gained more respect for the German squad. I will always root against you but for the first time in ever I actually enjoyed watching the games and style of play by the Germans. Take the compliment my friend, it doesnt get any better than this from me

See you at Eurocup 2008.

It’s a shame.

In the first half, they were the better team, the second half was dominated by us.

I don’t know who they bribed besides the FIFA guys who banned Frings which forced us to reconstruct our whole friggin midfield, but somehow they managed to score in the extra time.

Such a shame. I hope the Frogs will take care of those injury-faking pussies in the final. Then we shall do our part with the other shameless cheaters, e.g. the Portuguese.

Damn.
Any real soccer fan would have planned their time off from work as soon as FIFA published the schedule…haha. I am def leaving the office early. Make an excuse dude, anything to watch that game.

I really wanted Germany to win that. =/ Anyways, go France!

I hope I can get out of work tomorrow to watch the game.
God, what a great match !

Rematch of the Euro 2000 finals please!

Actually Germany v. Portugal on Saturday should be a good match too.

You know what you can do now Schwarzfahrer?

Awesome game yesterday. The 2 goals Italy scored are highlight film potential.

You GOTTA have at least one striker (or midfielder) who is deadly potent in the penalty area when he gets the ball.

Podolsky is good, but not in the class of Henry, Ronaldo, Del Piero… He had 2 solid chances and could not cash the cheque. And Klose didn’t do much. Ya gotta have a money man who can pull the trigger when it counts. Granted, Italy was very solid defensively, I can’t take that away from them.

I am not a big Portugal fan, and would like to see Zidane go out on top, but I say may the best team win. Balls and heart, give 'em hell - who’s still standing when the dust clears?

I was surprisingly gutted for the Germans. Along with quite a few of my fellow English mates I found myself actually cheering Germany on for the first time ever in this tournament.

That said, I’m afraid I think the Italians deserved their victory last night. Maybe they weren’t 2 goals better but they did just about shade it. Also there was an absence, (comparitively speaking) of diving and other gay nonsense normally associated with them. A few more performances like that and I will cease automatically rooting for the other team. Camoranassi (sp?) has bad hair though. Even for a non-Italian it would be bad.

I still can’t see anyone beating France however. Except maybe France of course, although I think it’s too late in the game now for one of them to do one of their disappearing acts.
juninho wrote:

Camoranesi

the ref did a great job of not taking any of that diving bullshit from either the Eye-Ties or the Krauts…he was the man of the match in my opinion. After the frist 5 times they rolled around with no foul called they started to learn and get on with it.

good game and now rooting for italy, even though they keep playing that chump iaquinta instead of inzaghi.

I have a question for those of you who root against Italy, who seem to be for the most part in English-speaking countries and Northern Europe: what is it about Italian soccer players/teams you so despise?

Is it their success? Is it the nation itself? Is it the Italian people?

Do you really think Italy has obtained all their successes and achievements by Diving???

You must be mad, crazy, loco, or are you simply…jealous?

Italy’s record in the last 9 cups:

1970: 2nd
1974: 4th place
1978: 4th place
1982: Campioni del mondo, World champs
1986:knocked out in 2nd round
1990:4th place, eliminated on penalty kicks
1994: 2nd place, penalty kicks again
1998:Penalty kicks AGAIN
2002: Italy loses to Korea in suspicious fashion. Consider: Italy had five goals disallowed in three matches and a series of questionable decisions go against them even before their second round match against co-hosts South Korea.

Totti was controversially dismissed and what appeared a very tight offside decision went against them, both in extra time, before Italy loses on a golden goal to the co-hosts.

Was this “typical” italian “whining”?

The Guardian of Manchester itself, and not an Italian paper, called it “a non-existent offside.”

Was it Italian “Opera”?

Theage.com, an Australian site, wrote: “…Italy was robbed blind in a 2-1 overtime loss to South Korea in a second-round World Cup game that was refereed atrociously by Ecuador’s Byron Moreno.”

Not enough? Not convinced?

Consider:
Spain also had not one but TWO goals disallowed against Korea.

I see this record, and yet I see and hear no respect.

Why?

That despite their talent they will resort to “flopping” / ugly catenaccio in order to get the result.

No racist overtones - strictly limited to their style of play. They have a lot of talented offensive players yet the Azzurri are notorious for playing ugly, defensive football. It’s rather boring to watch a lot of the time.

not all, but some. I note this WC 2nd round vs. Australia. Italy may have ended up winning that game, but the PK just left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth (well, except Italy supporters)

No. We just like to see good, open, flowing football, not the “anti-football” that Italy usually plays - this last match notwithstanding.

You were getting raped by the Spanish in the quarters until Tassotti’s criminal (he was suspended for 8 matches after that) elbow that broke Luis Enrique’s nose in the penalty towards the end of the match that was a clear PK opportunity and went uncalled, whereupon Baggio dispatched the shellshocked Spaniards 2 minutes later.

Here, I agree with you - Italy and Spain were both jobbed in favor of allowing the host Koreans to go through. However, there is no excuse for the Spanish muffing the penalty phase against the Koreans.

I for one, do not hate Italy, I respect their team, just am not a huge fan of their playing style, which is rather ugly no matter how effective it may be.

Sonny S:
Italy has great soccer, or football, whatever. I agree with that. I rooted for Italy simply because they were better on the day against the Germans. They deserved the win.

But - if you follow Italian football, I would not jump on a soap box and preach conspiracy theories against the Italians. They have a HUGE scandal at home right now. I think winning on Sunday is about the only way they can even start to heal the wounds that have been opened in the last month or so. And forget about the guy who “fell” out of his office window a couple of days ago. I truly wish him and Italian football all the best.

I am not saying that the Italians are the only nation with bribing problems, but they were caught, and it looks real bad. 4 clubs in the Serie A have been fingered.

That said, they ARE very good, their defence is rock solid. May the best side win on Sunday.

I could not agree with Oarsman more on pretty much all accounts.

Also, the current scandal in Italian soccer has left a really bad taste in my mouth. I hope they take the arbiter’s suggestion or whomevr said it, demote the teams to the third tier that have been found guilty.

And I used to worship AC Milan back in the days when van Basten and Gullit played there.

yes… yes!! fucking AMAZING!!

Well done France.

Fuck you Portugal.

Ronaldo was booed every time he touched the ball, that lad is unpopular everywhere it seems!

Bring on a quality final, don’t even care who wins, just want to see a good game.

how do the portoguese players live with themselves?

first there was ronaldo’s dive in the penalty box, where he pretended he was jumping for a header but his trajectory was downward into the ground before anyone touched him.

and then there were 3 other penalty box dives by portoguese players as well as i dunno how many outside the box.

what the hell?

i’m glad france beat them, cause they dont deserve to go anywhere cheating like that.

As he should have been.

Now that’s not very high of you, is it? Kick them while they’re down?

Not that I expect much from an Englishman, honestly.

Seriously, it was a good game, and, even though France did not deserve to win (France played MUCH below their average, and Portugal basically dominated most of the game), it’s just a game, and, to a certain extent, Portugal can’t really complain too much about the referee’s (obviously bad) call, since they were on the beneficiary side of previous bad calls.

That’s life. And life is not fair.

So, no hard feelings. It’s all good.

Let’s see how it goes against Germany. Not that it matters much, but I’m curious how two clearly depressed teams will play.

And, yes, I’m rooting for ITALY on the final. And if France plays as poorly as they did today, they are going DOWN.

FORZA ITALIA!

Yeah, the first 30 minutes or so (don’t remember exactly when the goal was scored) had me really shaking, Portugal was playing really top-notch, and France was making elementary mistakes.

And although it can be debated whether or not Henry should’ve gotten that PK, it’s clear he was impeded, and didn’t dive, but it’s a matter of whether or not it was intentional.

And as usual, France played quite clean, and Portugal didn’t.

Two final things. First off, when Ronaldo got rolling, he was amazing. Boo the kid all you want but he’s a good player. And second, France really needs to step up against Italy.

GO FRANCE!
