Official World Cup 2006 Thread

Seriously, but I have this gut feeling Italy, although not that impressive thus far, will somehow make it to the final. As in years past, it seems like everytime they face controversy or are simply dismissed as potenial winners manage to sneak their way in the final or semi-finals. Best examples are 1982 (winners) and 1994 finalists. Although, they could have easily have made it to the finals in 1990, but lost out on penalty kicks to Argentina in the semi. Anyone on this thread feel Italy have a legitimate chance of winning the W/C?
Hey, why not?

This is what makes the WC so cool. A team gets hot and they can make a deep run. Throw in some luck, and boom!

Italy has the talent up front and the best keeper in the world, so it’s totally possible.

Looking at the draw, they will probably face the winner of group G or Ukraine in the quarters and then have a tough matchup against either Argentina or Germany in the Semis - which would be spectacular matches. All in all totally possible.

Well,

This would be quite cool, since I’ll be in Palermo at that time with some of my brother’s in-laws. Watching a World Cup final in Italy with the Italians in it … would be pretty damn cool.

Regards,
Mark

i dont understand why people say buffon is the best keeper in the world…he’s highly overrated IMO…i would take Casillas or Van Der Sar over him any day.

I hope for my team’s sake that this is not the case on Monday. The Aussies are fired up to play Italy and there is a growing belief over here that this team can go further. It’s going to be hard, the Italians are good, but anything is possible!

Wow! kudos to supermick

does she have any sisters?

Ukraine will be playing the Swiss on Monday and a win will put them against Italy or the Aussies.
I’m hoping they go through.

Tonights games will be interesting to watch.

Germany put a beating on the Swedes - damn, they made it look easy. Strong in the back and midfield and deadly at the attack. If there is a weakness on this team I think it’s at goal. Lehmann is good, but he seems tentative and is not as confident as Kahn.

But otherwise a rather impressive performance.

The Swedes just choked the game away after Larsson’s botched PK. Even with the man down, it would have changed the whole game around. The Germans were in cruise control after the second goal, so I figure they should be fresh for Argentina. (Which will probably slaughter Mexico).

That quarterfinal is going to be epic.

Germany “tanks down” Sweden.

Two early goals demoralize the scandinavians who can’t turn the game even after a penalty shot.

The germans played pretty good but there were still a few mistakes, one of them being the numerous “missed” wideshots from the middlefielders.

Sad that you lost Sweden but you can stay and celebrate with us.

Way to go Germany!!!

Man I am impressed how disciplined they play…I hope they will go all the way.

I am really scared to play against Argentinia though, they look really strong and powerfull…not like those other “favorites”.

I’m not Munich fan, but boy does their stadium look awesome…

Eisenbeisser

So that was the first time I saw Germany play and thought they have a good chance of winning the whole thing.

Sweden played at pretty much the same level as they did against England but Germany has far less trouble with them than we did.

That said, Sweden were very unlucky to have Lucic sent off.

Regardless though, I’m not so sure of myself about the outcome of Germany-England final now!

Well done.

Time for some predictions:

England will own Ecuador

Portugal will defeat Holland, though it’s gonna be close

Italy will beat the Soceroos, no doubt.

Switzerland will probably beat the Ukraine

Brazil…well…sorry, Ghana

Spain vs France - I have no clue

Semi Finals:

Germany vs Italy

Portugal or England vs Brazil

Here are my predictions…

England vs. Ecuador, this is my one wishful prediction, and it’s Ecuador.

Portugal vs. Netherlands, going to be close, both teams did very well in the groups, but I can’t quite see Holland losing this. I just hope it doesn’t go to penalty kicks, the suspense is electrifying, but it never feels very justified.

Italy vs. Australia, Italy.

Switzerland vs. Ukraine, Switzerland.

Brazil vs. Ghana, godammit I wish I could say Ghana, I LOVE that they went through, but it’s going to be Brazil.

Spain vs. France, this is also going to be a very close game, but unless France pulls it together, it’ll be Spain.

QUARTERS

Germany vs. Argentina, probably going to be one of the better games of the World Cup, but my money is on Germany. They’ve been on fire plus home turf advantage makes me think they’ll outplay Argentina.

Ecuador vs. Holland, this is where my wishful thinking stops, heh, Holland will take this, even if England would win the game in the Round of 16.

Italy vs. Switzerland, Italy.

Brazil vs. Spain, Brazil, although it’ll be a pretty nice game.

SEMIS

Germany vs. Italy, probably going to be the best game to watch, both very nice, aggressive teams, it’s really up for grabs, especially since by this point the Germans might have lost some steam. My money is still on Germany.

Holland vs. Brazil, two very contrasting teams, it’ll be close. Like the Germany vs. Italy game, it’s really up for grabs, but my money is still on Brazil.

FINAL

Germany vs. Brazil, like the last two games, very much up for grabs, but I hate the Germans so I say Brazil.

I?m dissapointed how Argentina played the first half, lot of problems in defence…well lot of problems everywhere.

I guess win is a win, we deserved it too in the end cause after that i felt Argentina dominated the game.

Sadly didn`t see GER-SWE game but damn were gonna have big problems with Germany now.

Joe Cole who?

Who would we be playing once we’ve crushed Ecuador?

The winners of which other 2nd group or is it another draw then?
Porugal or Holland
