Hey ahu how’s the food at UCSD? Should i max out the meal plan or just get the minimum and cook mostly in my apartment?
Depending. If you are going to be on campus (i.e. a dorm) just get the meal plan… you’ll figure out ways to eat for pretty cheap for each cafeteria. If you are able to cook though, nothing will ever be cheaper than that nor healthier.
I visit UCSD on occasion, so I know a bit about the food… the thing about the meal plan is it’s not like buffet style, you basically have to ask for a particular dish and it gets charged off some chunk of money you bought for the meal plan. The portions are tiny and not enough to satisfy, so you’ll have to eat a lot… much better than the glop they serve here in SB though.

BTW, thanks for the UCSD college overview thing, ahu. I’m going to put in a transfer app this coming fall, so it’d be nice to know what to choose lol.
Yep no probs. Just happy it helps some people.

The largest on-campus gym (there’s two), RIMAC gym, is an awesome gym with IIRC 6 power racks, Olympic weights for your pleasure, and I THINK DBs up to 200lbs…ah 2-a-days there during college were a pleasure

BTW Marshall college and ERC are the two closest colleges to the gym… all the others are like damn near 15 minutes of straight walking on an incline. With the gym <2 minutes away, I had no excuses lol

Moving to SD in October, will be stationed at Pendleton. I’m pumped, never been to SoCal before. Any recommendations on where to live (probably splitting a house with 1-4 other Marines)?

well if you’re going to be stationed in Pendleton then I’d look for a spot up there in Oceanside. I dont really like to have to commute to work so I like living close to where I work.
San Clemente is pretty awesome and its not too far south of Oceanside

You can also look into Carlsbad. It’s just south of Oceanside. San Clemete is actually north of Pendaleton. It’ll depend on where you work on pendalton and if you think you’ll drive to LA or San Deigo more often. I would first decide if you want to be north or south of the base.

SOUTH SIDE FTW

^^yeah Im retarded… I was in class typing that on my phone.

Yeah LA sucks balls… South Side all the way.

If you don’t mind the commute and like a quiet town, Fallbrook has pretty cheap rent.

I need my chalk bag back… whens the next meet up???

Allright folks,

It’s Comicon Day/Weekend.

If you’re not going, I still recommend driving by the convention center or posting up at a bar in gaslamp because it’s a complete shitshow of freaks, geeks, wannabe’s, dungeonmasters, and regular cool folks condensed into a few blocks. I’m going to Horton for lunch today (hopefully) before I head home to Ventura this afternoon.

Thursdays are good days to go, since everyone will have fresh costumes. haha.

Traffic needs to addressed here.

iF you are going from North to south in the morning, I highly recommend that you take the Pacific Highway next to the coast instead of the I-5 in the morning. Traffic is shit due to the convention but no one knows about the local routes and the PCH is pretty damn fast.

So from around San Marcos to La Jolla take PCH. = ~25-30minutes

Then from La Jolla, take Genesee all the way down to Kearny Mesa then hop on to the I-805 from there and then connect to the 163 to downtown. = ~30minutes

This will save you many a headaches by avoiding the I-5. = til’ you die.

Anybody have better ideas?

SDCC is awesome people watching! I used to lie in little Italy and the hotel acrosste street was te official hotel of comic con. It was awesome to watch! So many ridiculous costumes! I remember seeing one guy walking down the street in a full on costume with a 5 foot long foam sword strapped to his back. The blade had to be at least 1-2 feet wide! Looks like something straight out of a Final Fantasy video game. It was sweet.

I haven’t been into comics since I was about, ohhh 8 years old, but I think it’d be cool to go one year. That’s something I really wanna do still.

The Star Wars day is ALWAYS good for some pretty legit costumes

Has anyone mentioned floatopia?

nope, no mention of floatopia…i am not even exactly sure what it is, when it is, how ong it has been around and the point of it. you know the details?

I went to the first “Raft-a-palooza” a couple years ago… Basically everyone gets boats, rafts, inner tubes, floaties (hell I even saw a couple blow up air matresses) and they float around in the bay where you can drink legally. It was pretty rad and totally crazy. A friend of mine had a boat and hired a mariachi band to come play on the boat. People were doing beer bongs out of those water noodle floatie things. it was funny

My battalion is right in the middle of the base. I’m thinking south. I have a cousin in LA and could end up there a lot of weekends, but LA is 90 minutes from Pendleton versus 30 to SD, is that right?

Greg,
I can bring you the chalk bag whenever. PM me if you are available this week, we all live closeby, I can drop it after work anyday.
For Morstad, PM me if you have a date in mind for anyday for the prowler, I need 1 day notice so I can pack it in the trunk in the morning. Have my son visit some days and weekends too, need to deconflict.
It’s all good…

Ahu2468, Thanks for the recommendation for the wings place in Mira Mesa, will check it out…

For the guys working up in Pendleton, live up there. Commuting sucks period. San Diego or LA. Have a bunch of guys that work at my shop and have to commute up to ACU5@ pendleton regularly.

Chris

It depends on where you end up living and where you cousin is. La is huge, so the base may be a bit closer to san diego then the center of la but it’s pretty close to Irvine and the surrounding area. I would say the base is about the same from long beach as it is to LA. Traffic is going to affect you time alot though. Personally I love San Diego and would head there on the weekends, but so do alot of people. Once I came down from la to SD on a sat morning and traffic was insane. Apparently everyone else goes down to SD on the weekend too. You could always just chill in Oceanside, it’s pretty nice. Though i’ve found there’s more jarheads and less females there than SD or LA. So it really depends on what you want to do in your free time.
