Off-Season Training for Judo

I only do “sport” judo, but thanks for the tips!

Hi there
I am a judo competitor from the UK, with an interest in Olympic lifting.
I am new to this site but post frequently in the fitness section at a judoforum

Judo players need a lot of acyclical power endurance, similar to wrestlers. They also need to have very good anaerobic fitness (we talk about raising the lactic threshold).
However before you can build power endurance, you must build power (speed-strength), and before you can build power, you must build strength.
That is why high level competitive judo players typically use a periodization program comprising of 3 or more phases

phase 1 GPP and hypertrophy
phase 2 Strength
phase 3 Speed - Strength
phase 4 power endurance

How long you spend in each phase depends on your training experience, your personal goals, and when your next competition is.

I am personally in the “offseason” so I train with weights using Olympic lifts, heavy weights and low reps to build strength and explosive power.
I also do hill sprints and “tabata” high intensity intervals twice per week for aerobic and anaerobic fitness.
I find that Judo Randori (ne waza and tachi waza) 2 or 3 times per week builds a lot of endurance

Conjugate periodization is better than the linear style just mentioned.
