I know this may seem like a dumb question, but I ran across this idea for a shake that calls for a 1/2 c of oats along with 2 scoops of protein powder, a 1/2 banana and flaxseed oil…anyway I tried making the thing today and the oats just sank straight to the bottom of the blender.
Can oats be liquified? My blender is old, so that might be the source of the problem.
blend the oats first, remove them. Throw 4 to 6 oz of ice with the water and blend. when the ice gets pretty well crushed throw everything in the blender. as you drink, the oats will still sink to the bottom but not to bad. when it does just spin the cup.
My blender gets the oats no problem, nothing left in the blender and nothing chunky or otherwise “unblended”. So if nothiing else works for you and you want your oats in your shake, a new blender could do the trick.
my question is kind of related. I have been taking about 1/2 cup oats dry with my protein shake after my work out to get the carbs into my system with the protein. A friend of mine told me today i should be using quick carbs like a piece of white bread with jam on it with the shake after instead of oats ( i like to keep it really healthy so a banana or oatmeal is all i usually take with my protein). Any suggestions? Sorry for hijacking the thread.
I put anything on the shelf (within reason) in a protein shake. I have put in Oats, Flax Seed, Wheat germ, Rye, Green Tea (pre-boiled/steeped). Try this: need a multi/high spped blender.
1/2 cup Quaker Oats
1/2 cup Ground Wheat Germ
1/2 cup Flax Seed
2-3 cups Chocolate Metabolic Drive
couple tablespoons of Peanut Butter
couple handfuls of Ice
Fill with Ice Green Tea
blend slow to high and enjoy. If its too thick add more tea or water.

Save up and get a Vitamix blender. Hands down the best blender money can buy. If that’s too expensive, get a mortar and pestle and grind away.
Amen to that, got a friend to try a protein shake made with it and they wanted me to make them one. Blends ice like no other.

I’m going to have to make one of these things… I just hate cleaning the blender afterwards!
I always follow the method of when I am done blending, I throw in a bunch of hot water and then add some dishwashing soap. I put it back on the blender and run it for a bit. Does a nice job of cleaning around the blades.
The “Magic Bullet” - yes that never ending infomercial - is simply amazing for shakes. It will blend anything - it turns oats into powder in like 5 seconds. And I love it cause I can add a ton of ice to any shake with little water (its the texture of a milkshake - so thick I can turn the cup upside down) and it just blends it like well, magic. But the best part is clean up - unscrew the blade, drink the shake , rinse off the blade, and be done with it.

I always used a long straw to drink shakes with blended oats. The first few sips are a bit “grainy”, but if you tilt the shake (so that the straw is catching all of the bits) before long all the grit at the bottom is gone and nothing is leftover when you finish the shake.
Well, I attempted to make my shake again today and it came out 100% better! Thanks everyone for the tips.
What I did was put the oats in first, grind them up, then dumped them out of the blender, added my water, 1/2 banana, protein powder and flaxseed oil and then poured the oats back in and blended it up until it reached the desired consistency…tasted great!
Glad you sorted it out, although it sounds like a pain in the arse. My blender is new (typical wedding present, right?), and I simply shove the oats, water, protein powder, flax seed and fruit into it, then turn it on high. After 45-60 secs it’s all shaked up and ready to drink.
Invest in a new blender, mate; they’re not that expensive
