Northerner Wanting to Move Down South
BennyHayes wrote:
If you move to the Atlanta area, and are fascinated with the idea of swimming in the Chattahoochie River—DON’T. No telling what you will end up with. Canoeing is fine, rafting is fine, swimming is not. It used to be party zone back in the 70’s, and the bottom is littered with broken glass from liquor bottles, edges of cans, industrial waste, etc. Plenty of swimming options in mountain rivers just a short drive away. If mountain biking is your bag, it is all nearby. The Silver Comet Trail is a paved biking road that goes for miles, to Alabama and beyond. Plenty of suburban areas around here, with people from all walks of life and ethnicities living in the same neighborhoods.
Oh it’s not that bad. I’ve only found a few dead bodies in the river…(2). I’m on it daily coaching high school rowing.

Houston, fuck yeah. Your only 4 hours away from Dallas,2 hours away from New Braunsfel/Austin/San Antonio and only 6 hours to New Orleans. Its like your in perfect position to other places of a mini country.

The PA/MD border is the Mason/Dixon Line. Maryland is the beginning of the South, though most people don’t realize it.

The Patriots suck.

No ones likes Ben Aflack.

The Celtics suck.

Tom Brady has bad hair.

Crab cakes taste like dong.

The Red Sox suck.

Baked beans are awful.

The movie “The Town” was a huge rip off of “Heat”.

Remember… I did say “with all due respect”

Crab cakes are a Maryland thing.
GOOD crabcakes are a Maryland thing. What most other parts of the country consider crabcakes is a joke.

Very true, I’ve had some nasty crab cakes outside of Maryland. Although, I prefer just picking blue crabs anyway.

And to your point about MD being the start of the South, this is true. Maryland is kind of it’s own entity, it’s east coast but doesn’t really have a true northern or southern identity. Different parts of the state seem to lean a little one way or the other. What county are you from/living in? I grew up in PG.

Maryland isn’t the South. Hell I don’t even consider VA really part of the South. The culture is ridiculously different than the rest of the South.

South = GA, MS, LA, AL, NC, SC, TN, KY, AR. From a cultural standpoint these are definitely the set of states that share similar cultures, dialects, etc. VA in parts has this but a lot of the NOVA areas not so much.

Yea man I agree with you. I was just supporting Lew’s point that technically MD is below the Mason-Dixon Line and that it doesn’t have a northern OR southern identity.

Yankee land to me haha.

Nope. Maryland sided with the Confederacy. The federal government occupied the state since DC is smack dab in the middle of MD and VA.

So Florida and Texas are not the South even though we are farther south than what you put up as the South.

This is a true statement. The closer you get to the ocean and the bay, the more Southern it seems. I grew up in Baltimore and you had at least 4 different accents going on - southern, the Bawlmer accent they try to attribute to everyone from Baltimore, a bastardized NE accent, and then people like me who really have no accent, per se. When I went away to college everyone thought I was from California or NY.

Culturally they are most definitely not Southern. I define the South as a cultural thing more so than a geographical one though there is some overlay of course.

I can see Florida its Gods waiting room for New Yorkers, However I have lived all over the South and Texas has more a diverse culture but it is definately southern.

I think Florida and Texas are a lot like Virginia in this respect.

Northern Florida is very close to the other states that LM lists. But southern Florida is largely made up of Yankee transplants and a large Hispanic population…

Likewise, east Texas is much like the list of states, but northern Texas as I remember it has the free range, cattle ranch thing going on and southern Texas has the Tex-Mex Hispanic influence…

Mixed with a little german/french/alsatian, especially the smaller communities

This, plus Southern Illinois and Southern Missouri are “South” in my book. Texas has more in common with the Midwest than the “South”…well except for Austin which is actually located in Cali.

The more you know.

Nope. West Texas(El Paso,Odessa) had more in common with Southwestern United States while East Texas had more in common with the Traditional South(Vidor,Jasper,Orange) North Texas (Dallas) does indeed have more in common with the Midwest. It gets abit more complicated when your trying to place what Central Texas is and a city like Houston.

Token I think people forget it takes almost 12 hours (normal highwayspeed with stops) to travel from Beaumont to El Paso.

Why is our state so great and epic??
